Pittsburgh Steelers' Rookie QB Will Howard Earns Comparisons to Super Bowl Champion Jalen Hurts
Pittsburgh Steelers' Rookie QB Will Howard Earns Comparisons to Super Bowl Champion Jalen Hurts originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers don't have a final answer on who's playing quarterback next season, but if it comes down to rookie Will Howard, some feel like the team is in great hands. Advertisement The Steelers are still playing the long waiting game with free agent veteran Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to sign a contract to wear the black and gold in 2025. There's a chance that he won't. Which means the team would have to find an answer elsewhere - perhaps a trade for Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins - or rely on Howard. Bleacher Report's James Palmer thinks that Howard's upside is so high, he compared him to a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in the state of Pennsylvania. "Will Howard has some traits that some people really, really liked in this draft," Palmer said. "Big, strong, athletic guy. There was one comment that I thought was interesting. Somebody compared him, when I was talking in the draft process, to Jalen Hurts. Just kind of in terms of the physicality and the size he can run with. I think Hurts is a better athlete out in space, but I just thought that was interesting that somebody brought that up." Advertisement The Steelers picked up Howard in the sixth round of this year's NFL Draft with the No. 185 overall pick. If he can turn into anything close to Hurts, a second-round pick in 2020, then Pittsburgh will have found a gem in the late rounds. He could also make Steelers fans forget that they ever thought about signing Rodgers. Jason Kelce Receives Strong Message From Rookie NFL QB
Jason Kelce Receives Strong Message From Rookie NFL QB originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jason Kelce, a former NFL center and brother of Travis Kelce, spent his entire 13-season career with the Philadelphia Eagles, earning six Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl title, and recognition for leadership and passionate play. Advertisement All these accolades and more were given as clues to Steelers' rookie quarterback Will Howard in a short NFL segment where he had to guess the player. The former Ohio State Buckeye signal-caller has always been an Eagles fan. So he could quickly connect the dots to find his answer. Along with it, he dropped some strong words on Kelce. "I grew up in Eagle Stands," He said. "I was a big fan of Jason all growing up. I just loved how gritty he was, and he kind of made something of himself when people kind of called him out." Jason Kelce on the ESPN postseason countdown set.© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Howard joined the Steelers as a sixth-round pick. He enters a quarterback room led by Mason Rudolph, who will start under center this season. For now, Howard will serve as the backup signal-caller. Rudolph recently appeared on stage at President Donald Trump's May 30 rally in West Mifflin, where Trump praised the Steelers quarterback as 'tall, handsome, got a great arm,' and predicted he was 'gonna be the guy' for Pittsburgh this season. Advertisement Howard was the main man under center for Ryan Day's championship-winning team. He threw for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He could soon find his role model, Aaron Rodgers, in Mike Tomlin's camp. If that happens, he could find himself slipping down the depth chart. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph thinks Will Howard has a lot of tools.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph thinks Will Howard has a lot of tools. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Many expected the Pittsburgh Steelers to take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but not many thought they would wait as long as they did. Advertisement They drafted Ohio State field general Will Howard with the 185th pick in the sixth round of the draft, and veteran QB Mason Rudolph thinks that the rookie has a lot of good things going for him. "He's been great," Rudolph said in a recent interview with Missi Matthews. "He's a nice guy, first of all. He's a good guy to share the quarterback room with... He is athletic and he throws the ball well... I think he's got a lot of tools and I'll be excited to go to work with him." Some, including former NFL coach Jon Gruden, have compared the 6-4, 236 pound rookie to Buffalo Bills' MVP winner Josh Allen, who himself was not all that in his rookie season. If Howard can live up to even half of that comparison, the Steelers have something to look forward to. Advertisement In his final season with the Buckeyes this past season, Howard finished with 4,010 passing yards and 35 touchdowns on 73 percent completion, all three of which led the Big Ten Conference. The Steelers' current starting quarterback is Rudolph, with no Aaron Rodgers decision seeming to be imminent just yet. But eventually? If Howard can prove that he has all of the tools that Rudolph says he does, he could have an opportunity to take the veteran's job as Pittsburgh's QB1. Steelers rookie Will Howard on Week 1 of OTAs: 'First day was work in progress'
Steelers rookie Will Howard on Week 1 of OTAs: 'First day was work in progress' Will Howard hit a wall on Day 1 of Steelers OTAs — but he's not shying away from the challenge, as he's ready to learn and move forward. Howard's first week of Steelers OTAs is officially in the books, and he recently explained to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette what the experience was like overall: "First day was a work in progress. I didn't feel great about my first day — just coming off the field, but it was a good learning experience," Howard told reporters at OTAs on Thursday. "I wasn't expecting to be perfect on my first day. I'm not going to be perfect. That's the thing — you've got to learn. Especially me, being young, you've got to be able to roll with the punches and know you're going to make some mistakes — especially being a rookie." The Steelers rookie further broke down his performance, stating that Day 1 was more about getting his feet under him, while Days 2 and 3 were better practices. Pittsburgh Steelers risk 2025 season by choosing rookie Will Howard over Aaron Rodgers
Steelers pick rookie Will Howard over Aaron Rodgers for 2025 QB (Image via: Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Steelers, long known for their consistency and playoff presence, are entering a critical turning point. With the 2025 NFL season approaching, the franchise has made a stunning shift at the most important position. Rather than pursue proven veteran Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers appear ready to roll with rookie Will Howard, a sixth-round pick who's never taken a snap in the NFL. Will Howard over Aaron Rodgers — the Steelers' most polarizing decision yet Bleacher Report recently ranked the best quarterback options for Pittsburgh, and the verdict raised eyebrows across the NFL. Will Howard topped the list ahead of Rodgers with analyst Brent Sobleski calling the rookie a 'win-win' choice. According to the logic, either Howard shines unexpectedly, or the team's struggles result in a high 2026 draft pick. For a franchise like Pittsburgh, that thinking is borderline heresy. This isn't just a coaching decision, it's a philosophical shift. The Steelers, once allergic to losing, now seem open to the idea if it means solving their long-term quarterback dilemma. It's a gamble that flirts with tanking, whether the team admits it or not. Aaron Rodgers, though aging, remains one of the few quarterbacks who can elevate a roster overnight. Overlooking him in favor of an untested rookie not only risks on-field failure but could also create tension in the locker room and among the fanbase. Players want to win now. Fans expect it. Is the front office prepared for the fallout? One thing's for sure: the Steelers aren't just betting on a quarterback. They're betting their legacy on him.
