Tengku Zafrul officially joins PKR

The Star2 days ago
OSAKA: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafru Abdul Azizl is now officially a PKR member.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister confirmed that the party had accepted his membership application.
He is now a member of the Ampang PKR division.
'I can confirm that I have applied (to join) the party and I have informed the secretary-general on the matter,' he said when met by the Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion in World Expo 2025.
Asked if his membership application had been accepted, Tengku Zafrul answered in the affirmative.
'Yes,' he said, adding that his membership was approved following the party's leadership council meeting about two weeks ago.
In May, Tengku Zafrul submitted his resignation letter as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief and as a party member.
He then said that he would begin the application process of being a PKR member and had expressed the intention to the PKR president.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is PKR president.
Tengku Zafrul's departure from Umno comes just days after two PKR stalwarts – Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad – had resigned as Economy Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, respectively.
Rafizi had lost his deputy presidency in the PKR party elections, while Nik Nazmi lost his position as vice-president.
Tengku Zafrul had quit as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year, and speculation has been rife since late last year that he would leave the party to join PKR.

Sabah Govt prioritises ethnic cultural heritage preservation

Hajiji accompanying Tun Musa visiting the exhibition booths at the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival. TUARAN (Aug 10): The State Government always supports any non-governmental organisation (NGO) that organises activities aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the various ethnic groups in Sabah, as long as they do not overlap with similar government-organised programmes. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said that the organisation of arts and cultural programmes, such as the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival, can elevate the state's cultural treasures to a higher level, thereby enhancing the state's image at the global stage. Such programmes also strengthened the bonds of unity among the local community, regardless of race or religion, he said at the opening of the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival at the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Centre at Lok Batik here on Sunday. The event was graced by Head of State, Tun Musa Aman and his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. 'In line with the festival's theme 'Budaya Tradisi Teras Perpaduan Malaysia Madani', it becomes the responsibility of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association to uphold the unity agenda as a central cause. This is because the goal of elevating our cultural heritage is to create harmony and preserve unity. 'For generations, and centuries, the people of this state have practised a way of life rounded in mutual respect, cooperation, and helping one another regardless of skin colour or religious belief,' he said. Hajiji said the spirit of togetherness and mutual tolerance among the people of this state has shaped Sabah society into one with a unique yet captivating identity. 'With 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups present within the Sabah community, our society is indeed diverse and truly plural in the Malaysian context. 'Even so, the people of Sabah continue to live in harmony with a strong sense of unity, in line with the slogan 'Unity in Diversity',' he said. The Chief Minister said there are great benefits and wisdom in living harmoniously and in unity, whether it is unity within families, organisations, associations, communities, or the nation. 'Only through unity can we become strong, respected, and admired. If we are divided and disunited, we will become weak and easily dominated by others who wish to control or colonise us. Indeed, unity and strength are the keys to our success and progress,' he said. In the context of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association, he said it also aspires to be like other cultural or ethnic associations that serve as custodians and preservers of their people's traditional customs, ultimately nurturing the unity spirit among the rakyat. 'If this noble movement is sustained and further strengthened, God willing, we can develop Sabah not only in terms of physical development but also as a state rich in its community cultural and traditional values,' he said. Hajiji believed that through festivals such as this, with a variety of carefully curated events, including traditional dance competitions like Limbai and Runsai, the Bintang Soromas (singing) competition, and the Betitik competition, new talents in each respective field can be unearthed while preserving cultural heritage. Meanwhile, highlight events like the Ratu Serimpak (traditional beauty pageant) competition not only serve as a major attraction of the festival, but also showcase the quality of weaving arts and the ethnic Bajau motifs displayed in the garments worn by the participants. Hajiji also paid tribute to Tun Musa for his support to the formation of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association 12 year ago and in the development of the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Centre in Lok Batik beginning in 2017 during his tenure as Chief Minister of Sabah.

Don't be a hypocrite, Joniston tells Warisan

Joniston KOTA KINABALU (Aug 10): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has described Parti Warisan's announcement to contest all 73 State seats in the upcoming state election as mere rhetoric. He said Warisan's contention that it is doing so to block Peninsula-based parties from interfering in Sabah politics 'reeks of hypocrisy,' recalling the party's action to team up with Umno in the failed attempt to unseat the Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor-led State Government in January 2023. 'Wasn't Warisan's move to be in cahoots with Umno in the failed 2023 'Langkah Kinabalu' tantamount to giving Umno a life-line? Is Umno not a peninsula-based party? 'Warisan's action shows that it is prepared to do anything that serves its interest,' said Joniston, who is also Parti Bersatu (PBS) Information Chief. While Warisan has the right to contest all 73 state seats, Joniston said politics should not be reduced to a game of one-upmanship. 'Even in Sarawak, PBB could govern independently but chose to form GPS for a more inclusive state government,' said the Kiulu assemblyman during a meet-the-people session in Kampung Ranau-Ranau in his constituency. He also said that political stability from the very first day after polling is critical to ensuring that the government can immediately focus on serving the people. Joniston stressed that Sabah's political realities demand an end to post-election horse-trading, which risks delaying the urgent work of governing. 'We must be realistic. The priority is to have a stable government from day one, without endless bargaining or prolonged negotiations after the election. 'The sooner we have clarity, the sooner we can get to work,' he said. He noted that just as GRS works closely with Pakatan Harapan (PH) today, such cooperation safeguards Sabah's voice at the federal level while ensuring the state remains steady in its own governance. He stressed that the partnership is built on mutual respect, with Sabah's leadership and decision-making firmly in the hands of GRS. 'When the state and federal governments can work in sync, Sabah gains in funding, development, and policy support. That's what matters to our people,' he said. Joniston believed that only with stability can the government fully focus on solving pressing issues, from improving rural infrastructure to ensuring a reliable water and electricity supply and creating more economic opportunities for the people. He added that consistency in principles is essential to earn and keep public trust, especially when safeguarding Sabah's autonomy. While acknowledging that the people's mandate will ultimately shape the next government, he said GRS is committed to placing Sabah's stability and development above political brinkmanship.
