Why Is Wall Street So Bullish on Tesla? Here's the $1 Trillion Reason

Globe and Mail4 days ago
Key Points
Some Wall Street analysts are ultra-bullish on Tesla stock.
There's one catalyst responsible for this bullishness.
These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires ›
Dan Ives, a notable analyst at Wedbush Securities, has a $500 price target on Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock -- the highest of any analyst. Why is he so bullish? It all comes down to a $1 trillion opportunity that he thinks should send Tesla's stock price soaring for years to come.
Ives loves Tesla's robotaxi division
When it comes to electric car stocks, Tesla is king. The company produces more electric vehicles than any other automaker in North America. But it's not vehicle manufacturing that has Ives excited. Instead, he's brashly optimistic about the prospects for one key division: Tesla's fledgling robotaxi business.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
"The vast majority of valuation upside looking ahead for Tesla is centered around the success of its autonomous vision taking hold with a key June launch in Austin," Ives wrote to investors earlier this year. Other Wall Street experts believe Tesla is kick-starting what should become a $10 trillion global robotaxi market.
While Tesla's robotaxi division will take years to fully play out, Ives is surprisingly bullish about its near-term impact. Ives believes Tesla "remains the most undervalued AI play in the market today." He anticipates a $2 trillion valuation for Tesla over the next 12 to 18 months -- double Tesla's current market cap.
To be clear, Ives is a clear outlier. The average Wall Street price target for Tesla right now is around $300 -- below Tesla's current trading price. But Ives and other analysts remain excited due to their expectations for Tesla's robotaxi opportunity. Tesla has the capital, manufacturing capacity, and brand name recognition to pull it off. But the timeline could be more stretched than Ives and others believe. Ives has dramatically increased and decreased his price targets in the past, so investors should conduct their own research and form their own conclusions.

Tesla's quarterly results: what are investors and fans looking for?

A Tesla electric vehicle is seen leaving a Tesla showroom and service centre in Ottawa on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/ Patrick Doyle Tesla is likely to post its biggest drop in quarterly revenue in more than a decade on Wednesday, as the EV maker grapples with issues including increased competition, a lack of new models and consumer backlash against CEO Elon Musk. Here are the top five issues investors, analysts and Tesla fans are watching closely. Will Musk be distracted by politics? Musk formed a new U.S. political party, the America Party, earlier this month, after a public feud with President Donald Trump over a tax-cut and spending bill. Three months ago, when he was still allied with Trump, Musk said he was pulling back from working in the president's administration. Founding the party has rekindled worries that Musk will be distracted from business as it faces mounting competition, especially in its key China market, and as he tries to turn Tesla into a robotics and AI company. Musk said on Sunday that he was back to working seven days a week and sleeping in the office when his small children were away. How fast can robotaxi services expand? Last month, Tesla launched a small trial of its self-driving taxi service in Austin, Texas, with roughly a dozen of its Model Y SUVs and several restrictions, including safety supervisors in front passenger seats. Tesla enthusiasts lauded the efforts, although videos showed some driving mistakes. Musk has said the service would reach the San Francisco Bay Area 'in a month or two,' depending on regulatory approvals, but Tesla has not applied for necessary permits to test or deploy driverless vehicles, regulators in California told Reuters this month. Investors will want to know how the expansion can go forward. Where is the cheaper Tesla? When Musk shifted his focus to robotaxis, he canceled plans to build a new, cheaper EV platform. Tesla had promised to start producing the first of more affordable EV models by the end of June, but the company has not yet confirmed if it has met that target. Investors are keen for an update on those plans. Sources had told Reuters in April that a stripped-down version of the Model Y was likely to be delayed by months. Analysts have already cut their 2025 delivery estimate for the cheaper car to below 50,000 vehicles, from 63,500 at the start of the year, according to eight of them polled by Visible Alpha. Can the Model Y refresh boost sales? Tesla rolled out a refreshed version of the Model Y this year, a move investors hoped would recharge flagging sales. Deliveries of the SUV and its Model 3 compact sedan - Tesla's volume drivers - plunged in the second quarter. While Tesla blamed a January production pause to retool plants, some analysts have said the re-styling - including new front and rear light bars and a touchscreen for back-seat passengers - was not enough to boost demand. Investors will want to know Musk's view of the rollout to date and going forward. With total deliveries falling 13.5 per cent to 384,122 units in the second quarter, the second straight quarterly decline, revenue is expected to fall 11.2 per cent year-on-year, despite aggressive discounting and low-cost financing. How soon will regulatory credit dwindle? Sales of regulatory credits - a silent profit engine for Tesla - are set to dry up after recent legislation. Tesla earned US$2.8 billion in 2024 from such credits sold to legacy automakers to help them comply with emissions rules. Without them, the company would have reported a loss in the first quarter of this year. Analysts expect pressure on Tesla and they are already resetting their revenue estimates for the year. --- Reporting by Akash Sriram in Bengaluru and Abhirup Roy in San Francisco; Editing by Peter Henderson and Matthew Lewis

Palantir's Current Valuation: Stretched or Fully Justified?

Palantir Technologies PLTR has emerged as one of the most talked-about names in the S&P 500, and not just for what it does, but for what investors are willing to pay for it. With a market capitalization of $358 billion, it now surpasses giants like Coca-Cola and Bank of America. Yet, when viewed through a valuation lens, Palantir stands alone in its league. Its trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio exceeds 640X, and its forward 12-month multiple hovers above 225X. Even more striking is its enterprise value relative to forward 12-month revenue of more than 78X, a level rarely seen, even during the most exuberant periods in market history. By that metric, Palantir looks far more expensive than nearly every other established U.S. stock over the past two decades. Such elevated valuations raise the bar for future performance. For a company trading at these levels, expectations around revenue acceleration, margin expansion, and long-term scalability must not only be met; they must be exceeded. Even minor disappointments can trigger sharp corrections as multiples revert toward historical norms. Companies in the past that reached these kinds of revenue multiples — often 30x or higher — eventually faced tough questions about sustainability. Investor optimism alone is rarely enough to sustain prices when fundamentals don't keep up. The pattern is hard to ignore. When companies reach 30x sales or more, they often enter what is viewed as the 'bubble zone,' a place where expectations are sky-high and hard to maintain. Revenue growth typically slows, forecasts get downgraded and valuations eventually compress. In the short term, momentum can mask this risk, but over time, gravity tends to take hold. In conclusion, Palantir's valuation not only defies market norms but also places it well beyond even the exuberance seen in past bubbles. Unless its performance can defy history, the risk of multiple compression looms large. Investors should tread carefully. Stable Defense Alternatives to Palantir As PLTR's valuation moves higher, Lockheed Martin LMT and RTX Corporation RTX offer more grounded defense exposure. Lockheed Martin, with its massive defense contracts, provides steady cash flow and less volatility than PLTR. Its trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio is below 18X, and its forward 12-month multiple is just above 14X. Lockheed Martin continues to benefit from global rearmament while trading at modest earnings multiples. Similarly, RTX shines through missile systems. RTX's defense backlog, like LMT's, underscores its stability. Its trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio is below 44X, and its forward 12-month multiple is just above 23X. PLTR's Price Performance, Estimates The stock has surged a whopping 97% year to date, significantly outperforming the industry 's 19% rally. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for PLTR's earnings has remained unchanged over the past 30 days. PLTR stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).
