The Triumph of Horus to open 32nd Cairo Int'l Festival for Experimental Theatre - Stage & Street - Arts & Culture
The ritual, rooted in Edfu in Upper Egypt, reenacts the mythological victory of Horus and celebrates his divine kingship.
Structured as a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue, it is considered an early example of Egyptian theatrical forms fused with myth and ritual.
The staging for CIFET's opening ceremony will be directed and choreographed by Walid Aouni, the Cairo-based Lebanese choreographer honoured at last year's 31st edition for more than three decades of work in Egypt's modern dance and theatre scene.
Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre
Launched in 1988 by then-culture minister Farouk Hosny, CIFET has long been one of Egypt's most significant cultural events, designed to place Cairo on the international theatre map. The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture.
For its first two decades, the festival ran over 10 days each September, attracting dozens of Arab and international troupes for awards — at its peak in the late 2000s, CIFET was hosting 40 to 50 performances across multiple venues in Cairo and beyond.
The event was suspended for five years after the January 2011 revolution, before returning in 2016 under Sameh Mahran as its president.
Renamed the Cairo International Festival for Contemporary and Experimental Theatre (CIFCET), it adopted a smaller programme, a shorter run, and dropped its competitive format.
In 2020, during its 27th edition, the festival reverted to its original name and reinstated competition under the late theatre academic and playwright Alaa Abdel-Aziz.
Mahran returned as CIFET president in 2023.
The 32nd edition of CIFET will run from 1 to 8 September, with the full programme still to be announced.

Nelly Karim to Participate in Ramadan 2026 Drama Marathon
Yara Sameh Egyptian actress Nelly Karim is preparing for a new TV series, which she plans to participate in during the Ramadan 2026 drama marathon. She participated last Ramadan with the star-studded TV series ' Ekhwaty '. The cast features the likes of Ruby, Kinda Alloush, Gihan El Shamashergy, Aly Kassem, Hatem Salah, and more. It consists of 15 episodes and hails from scriptwriter Mohab Tarek and director Mohamed Shaker Khadir. Media Hub is the studio behind the series. The drama marks Alloush's comeback to the small screen after three years of absence forced by her breast cancer battle. She made her last onscreen appearance in the 2021 TV series " Sittat Bayt Al Maadi ", which featured a starry cast that included Injy El Mokkaddem, Mirhan Hussein, Tara Emad, and Sabry Fawaz. It hailed from scriptwriter Mahmoud Ezzat and director Mohamed Salama and Hadi El Bagoury. In December 2024, the Syrian star announced she was finally cancer-free six months after revealing her breast cancer diagnosis. Karim, born on December 18, 1974, in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Russian mother and an Egyptian father. She graduated from the Ballet Arts Academy and began dancing ballet at the Cairo Opera House in 1991. Karim also ventured into the world of modeling. Bean There slides neatly into that mix, except its beans come with report cards. Each batch is single-origin, graded into three tiers, and only the top level makes it into the cup. Those beans consistently score 85+ on the global coffee scale, with some nudging 93. It's the sort of obsessive sourcing usually reserved for sommelier notes, now baked into your flat white. The interiors tell their own story. Instead of neon signs screaming But First, Coffee, the palette pulls directly from Petra and Wadi Rum—sky blues and sand tones that translate Jordan's desert landscapes into New Cairo walls. It's restraint as aesthetic, confidence by omission. Still, what's getting talked about almost as much as the beans is the food. The Cairo outpost enlisted Lebanese-Brazilian Chef Patrick, known from MBC1, to shape the menu. Breakfast doesn't stop at shakshouka and pancakes; croissants come plain, almond, pistachio, or—because why not—stuffed with scrambled eggs. Lunch pushes further with tacos, mini burgers, and pasta dishes like ricotta cannelloni and pesto penne. It's a menu that skips borders the way Cairo skips traffic lights. Bean There started as a passion project in Amman, blending the intimacy of Middle Eastern coffee rituals with the pared-down focus of third-wave cafés. Its Egyptian debut carries that DNA but refuses the influencer gimmicks—no flower walls, no hashtags on the wall. Just beans, bread, and a quiet assurance that both are worth staying for.
