Pakistan's hospital starts administering new injection to save stroke-hit patients

Gulf Today28-04-2025

ISLAMABAD: The Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) Peshawar has started administering a new injection to save lives of stroke-hit patients.
"A 60-year-old patient, who has been administered the injection, is doing well as she was brought to the hospital within one hour of the attack and therefore stood better chances of recovery,' KTH medical director Dr Sajjadullah Dawar said, according to a report.
He said that patients should reach hospital ideally within three hours of the stroke attack but the result of patients visiting the health facility within four to five hours was also good.
Dr Dawar, a neurosurgeon, said that they got stock of the medicine from the hospital's funds to be provided free of cost to patients. "Meanwhile, the government has agreed to include this drug in the Sehat Card Plus (SCP) scheme so that people could benefit from it in the long-run,' he said.

The administration of the injection has already been started in Hayatabad Medical Complex and Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar that helped scores of stroke-hit people to recover.
However, both LRH and Hayat Medical Complex administrations have been requesting the government to provide it on SCP because it is very expensive and the majority of patients cannot afford it.
Dr Dawar said that the government would soon announce to cover the cost of new therapy under SCP to ensure provision of smooth services to patients. LRH and HMC have been providing the injection to patients on a cost-sharing basis.
However, it has been provided totally free to some deserving patients but its inclusion in SCP will make this drug available to all the patients who need it.
He said that they had developed proper protocol and a team of specialist doctors to ensure that the new medical technique for free treatment of patients suffering from stroke helped people.
"The injection is known for saving lives of patients and protecting them from disabilities caused by stroke,' said Dr Dawar.
He said that the tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) injection was used in hyper acute stroke within three hours to open up clotted arteries and was administered to patients after a very careful selection process.
"So far, results are excellent as most of the patients, who received it in LRH and HMC, have recovered,' he said and added that people should bear in mind that patients should be brought to hospitals immediately. He said that stroke was a sudden onset of weakness in limbs or face, which was the most disabling disease of the world.

Qatar: Medication home delivery service sees increase in usage

Doha, Qatar: Medication home delivery, a relatively new service introduced in Qatar's healthcare sector, continues to benefit an increasing number of people, with high levels of satisfaction reported by users. In 2024, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) home delivery services dispatched nearly 60,000 items. The home delivery service, operated by Qatar Post in partnership with HMC and PHCC, delivers medications, medical reports, medical consumables, and dietary products. According to reported data, HMC's medication home delivery service dispatched 56,436 items in 2024, while PHCC delivered 2,223 items over seven months in the same year. Launched in April 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the service continued due to positive feedback from patients. A fee of QR30 is charged for the service. A study published in October 2024 in BMJ Medical Journal highlighted the satisfaction and preferences of patients who used the new home delivery services offered by PHCC's health centres during the pandemic. The study involved 604 adults who used the medication delivery services. Participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with 11 service aspects on a 5-point Likert scale, where 1 meant 'highly dissatisfied' and 5 meant 'highly satisfied.' The scores were aggregated and adjusted to a maximum of 100 for clarity. Results showed that 45.5% of participants were very satisfied with the service quality. Additionally, 58.9% would recommend the service to others, though only 30.9% considered the delivery cost to be reasonable. Satisfaction levels varied, with Qatari nationals reporting an average satisfaction score of 89%, compared to 79.5% for expatriates. To access the HMC medication home delivery service, patients should call 16000 between 8am and 2pm daily, from Sunday to Thursday. To access the PHCC medication home delivery service, patients can call the designated number for their health centre or 16000 for more information. They can also contact their health centre via WhatsApp, with the number available on the PHCC website. Items will be delivered within two days of the request. Patients must present a valid health card, a payment card for medications/items and delivery fees, and be aware of their house and street address. This service is available across the country to all patients. © Dar Al Sharq Press, Printing and Distribution. All Rights Reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Qatar: HMC sees over 3mln outpatient visits in 2024

Doha, Qatar: The Outpatient Department of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) received more than 3 million visits, while its laboratory conducted over 24 million tests, making them the most sought-after services in 2024, according to statistics. HMC is the main public healthcare provider in Qatar, managing 12 hospitals — nine specialist hospitals and three community hospitals — as well as the Ambulance Service, and Paediatric Emergency Services among others. Since January 2024, HMC has been releasing monthly statistics from its hospitals and services. According to the data, outpatient services and laboratory tests were the most sought-after services in both the first and second halves of the year. The second half saw an increase in demand for both services. The Outpatient Department recorded 3,198,989 visits in 2024; it includes 1,770,362 visits between July and December 2024, which is an increase by 24% compared to 1,428,627 visits recorded between January and June 2024. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) conducted 24,372,843 tests; among it 11,759,079 tests were conducted in the first half of 2024 and 12,613,764 tests between July and December 2024, which is an increase by 7.27 percent. The Center for Patient Experience and Staff Engagement (CPESE) at HMC is working to improve the Referral and Booking Management System (RBMS) to enhance the outpatient experience by optimising appointment booking, reducing waiting times, and ensuring easier access to care. Meanwhile, DLMP provides the latest diagnostic laboratory services supporting improved diagnosis, treatment, disease management, and prevention. According to a report released yesterday on total activities across HMC hospitals and services in December 2024, the Outpatient Department received 295,997 visits by patients and 2,100,771 laboratory tests were conducted. A total of 4,142 medical reports were processed. 'HMC provides healthcare services and treatment to tens of thousands of patients each month across all of its hospitals and facilities." 'Here is an insight into the world-class, patient-centred care services delivered in December 2024. Wishing you good health and well-being,' HMC said on X platform. HMC's 'Nesma'ak' customer service helpline 16060 is the third most sought service in 2024 and it handled more than 1.7 million calls. Nesma'ak Customer Service supports the patients' entire journey at HMC through several services. Its staff are available at all HMC facilities through over 65 help desks by assisting, guiding and answering the patients and visitors' queries from 6am to 10pm and around the clock at the Hamad General Hospital's Emergency Department. HMC's Emergency Services also provided care to remarkable number of adults and children – a majority of them in life-threatening medical conditions. In 2024, the Emergency Departments at HMC hospitals received 672,701 patients, and the five Paediatric Emergency Centres of HMC treated 781,595 children. The Ambulance Service received 402,320 calls and recorded 1,887 life-flight air ambulance activations in 2024. In 2024, all hospitals across the HMC network treated 405,571 inpatients. A total of 25,467 babies were born between February and December 2024 at HMC hospitals. HMC's Urgent Consultation Service, which offers telephone consultations for urgent conditions without a prior appointment, received 147,896 calls in 2024. The National Mental Health Helpline, which provides professional mental health care and support, received 15,501 calls. © Dar Al Sharq Press, Printing and Distribution. All Rights Reserved.
