The Star03-05-2025

BERA: A man clearing the bushes behind his house in Felda Bukit Mendi near here was shocked to discover a human skeleton, including a skull, in an incident on Friday (May 2), Sinar Harian reports.
Bera OCPD Supt Zulkiflee Nazir told the Malay language daily that a report on the grisly discovery was received at around 11:50pm on Friday from a 51-year-old man.
He said the man had been clearing the bushes at approximately 4:30pm when he found the skeleton, skull, clothing, and an old phone suspected to belong to the victim.
"Initially, the man thought the object was a mannequin before his friend advised him to file a police report for further investigation.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the human skeleton was located about 100m from the house," he said Saturday (May 3).
The skeleton was found scattered, with clothing such as a shirt, trousers, and a jacket found nearby.
He added that the location of the discovery is in a swampy area of Felda reserve land filled with thick bushes.
The remains have been sent to the Forensic Unit of Bera Hospital for identity confirmation through DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) testing.
Supt Zulkiflee noted that the police had previously received a report of a missing 48-year-old man from Felda Bukit Mendi in July last year.
"So far, close family members have confirmed that the remains are likely those of the missing man based on the clothing found. However, further investigations are still ongoing," he told Sinar Harian.

Police nab two more suspects in Dataran Merdeka brawl

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested two more men to assist in investigations into a recent brawl at Dataran Merdeka. City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the suspects, aged 21 and 22, were arrested separately by the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department Anti-Vice, Secret Societies and Gambling (D7) Unit. With these latest arrests, a total of seven people have now been detained to assist in the investigation. "The first suspect was arrested at 1.40am in front of a building on Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur. "The second arrest took place at 3.15am at an apartment in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Selangor," he said in a statement. Rusdi said initial investigations revealed that both suspects were present at the scene during the incident, and one of them had admitted to assaulting the victim. Both suspects have been remanded to facilitate further investigations. On June 3, five men were remanded for two days in connection with a viral video of a fight in Dataran Merdeka. Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the suspects, aged between 17 and 23, were detained following an investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.

Legal storm hits PM, Dr M unfurls 'big umbrella'

Good morning. Wishing our Muslim readers Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha. Here's our news and views that matter for today. Key Highlights Legal storm hits PM, Dr M unfurls 'big umbrella' Daim's dynasty under fire, his widow fires back Rafizi in green, trading blows with Anwar? Legal storm hits PM, Dr M unfurls 'big umbrella' The Kuala Lumpur High Court has denied Anwar Ibrahim's bid to suspend his ex-aide Yusoff Rawther's civil suit in relation to a sexual assault allegation. Ordering that the trial proceeds on June 16 as scheduled, the court further ruled that the eight constitutional questions the prime minister sought to refer to the Federal Court did not meet the required threshold. Anwar has insisted that his bid to suspend the lawsuit was never about seeking personal immunity from litigation but 'concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated, or institutionally disruptive'. Adding to the prime minister's list of political headaches, his age-defying nemesis, Dr Mahathir Mohamad - now well into his wizard years - has unveiled another grand scheme to unseat his former apprentice and 'save the Malays'. The politician, who is just a month away from blowing out 100 birthday candles, unveiled a new Malay secretariat committee - pitched as a 'big umbrella' for the community. HIGHLIGHTS Daim's dynasty under fire, his widow fires back The MACC has secured approval to seize Daim Zainuddin's Ilham Tower once again, much to the frustration of the late former finance minister's lawyers, who have accused the commission of 'playing musical chairs with the law'. This development follows closely after the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted permission for the commission to seize seven properties belonging to Daim's family. Among the assets seized through an ex parte application are three luxury homes in London and a bank account reportedly valued at RM758.2 million. Daim's widow Na'imah Abdul Khalid has vowed to challenge the seizure and 'to not bow down to bullies'. 'A line has been crossed. If we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all, then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she emphasised. HIGHLIGHTS Rafizi in green, trading blows with Anwar? Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has expressed a desire to see former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli go head-to-head with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the next general election. He has urged PAS to make every effort to court Rafizi - who recently resigned as economy minister - and nominate him to contest the prime minister's parliamentary seat in Tambun, Perak. The ex-law minister also encouraged the Islamist party to approach former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, suggesting that he contest in Bentong, which is DAP MP Young Syefura Othman's seat. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazm resigned as ministers after failing to defend their respective party positions in the PKR polls. Previously, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan clarified that while the party has no plans to recruit the two leaders into Perikatan Nasional, it would not oppose their cooperation with the opposition bloc in Parliament. Three Jitra students killed in accident on NSE

ALOR SETAR: A day that was supposed to bring joy in anticipation of Hari Raya Aidiladha turned into a tragedy when three students from the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) in Jitra were killed in an accident at KM49.4 of the North-South Expressway, heading south from Alor Setar, on Thursday (June 5), Sinar Harian reports. The Malay language daily reported that in the 2,10pm incident, all the victims were on two motorcycles, travelling back to their respective hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha. All the victims, aged 19, are believed to have collided with an multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) before the fatal accident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri from Gurun; Muhammad Fahmi Jam from Jeniang, Sik; and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani from Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani. Another friend sustained serious injuries due to the collision. Sinar Harian reported that the bodies of all three victims have been sent to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) here for further action. The driver of the car has also been detained to assist in the investigation regarding the fatal accident. Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Siti Noor Salawati Saad told Sinar Harian that initial investigations revealed the accident occurred when a motorcycle lost control and crashed into the rear of the car, which had stopped in the emergency lane. At the same time, another motorcycle, coming from behind, failed to avoid the collision and hit the motorcycle in front, resulting in a serious crash. "As a result of the incident, two riders and a pillion rider died at the scene. "Another passenger was seriously injured and is now receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB)," ACP Siti Noor Salawati said in a statement Thursday afternoon. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
