Finally, Kolkata's Alipore Zoo to introduce cloakroom facility for visitors

Indian Express07-06-2025
To enhance visitor convenience and streamline guest experience, the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata is set to introduce a dedicated cloakroom facility within its premises. The much-awaited initiative will be installed ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja season.
West Bengal Zoo Authority has approved the implementation of a cloakroom service in response to longstanding concerns raised by both and local visitors, who have often faced difficulties managing their personal belongings during their time at the zoo.
According to Arun Mukherjee, director of the Zoological Garden, the cloakroom will be located adjacent to the main ticket counter for maximum accessibility. 'The facility will house around 1,000 cabinets and will be available free of charge. We are aiming to have it fully operational before the upcoming Durga Puja to better serve the festive crowd,' said Mukherjee.
Established in 1876, Alipore Zoo holds the distinction of being India's oldest zoological park and remains one of the most popular recreational destinations in the city. With an annual footfall of approximately three million, the zoo continues to attract visitors from across the country. However, despite its widespread popularity, the absence of a cloakroom has been a significant shortcoming in its public service infrastructure. Carrying backpacks, food baskets, and other large items has often caused inconvenience to guests, particularly during weekends, holidays, and the peak winter season.
Until now, the zoo's official website had advised visitors to avoid bringing excess baggage, clearly stating that no storage facility was available on site.
This cloakroom facility is in line with the zoo's ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and improve the quality of services offered to the public. It is expected to ease congestion at entry points and allow visitors to enjoy the zoo's offerings more comfortably.
In recent years, the zoo has introduced several upgrades, including purified drinking water stations, improved restroom facilities, sanitary napkin vending machines, breastfeeding rooms, battery-operated carts, and wheelchairs for the elderly and differently-abled.

PM Modi to unveil ₹5,200 cr metro, road projects in Kolkata on Aug 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation of projects worth Rs 5,200 crore, including three new stretches of the Kolkata Metro, and an elevated corridor in adjacent Howrah, during his visit to the eastern metropolis on August 22, officials said. PM Modi will inaugurate the new Metro stretches around 4.15 pm on Friday and undertake a metro ride from Jessore Road metro station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar station and back, a Kolkata Metro Railway spokesperson said on Wednesday. He will also lay the foundation of 7.2-km elevated Kona Expressway worth over Rs 1,200 crore, which will enhance connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata. The inauguration of the crucial 13.62 km, in all, of metro stretches will provide seamless connectivity between important points in the city, including Howrah and Sealdah stations, IT hub Sector 5 and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The three new stretches are Sealdah to Esplanade (2.45 km), Noapara to Jaihind Bimanbandar (6.77 km) and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata stations (4.39 km) across three different corridors of Kolkata Metro. After the inauguration, PM Modi will also address the gathering at Jessore Road metro station. The Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service will significantly improve access to the airport. The Sealdah-Esplanade metro will reduce the travel time between the two points from nearly 40 minutes to only 11 minutes, a Metro statement said. The Beleghata-HemantaMukhopadhyay metro section will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity with the IT hub. These metro routes will connect some of Kolkata's busiest areas, bring a notable reduction in travel time, and strengthen multimodal connectivity, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters, it added. While the new stretches will provide wide access to daily commuters and visitors to the length and breadth of the city, it is expected to also help revellers visit Durga Puja pandals throughout the metropolis during the festivities later next month. Howrah to Sealdah in 12 mins, fare Rs 5 to Rs 70: New metro lines to transform Kolkata's travel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday will inaugurate three new metro lines in Kolkata, a major development set to transform the city's transport landscape. With Durga Puja approaching, the metro's expanded reach is expected to make celebrations more accessible and stress-free for residents. The new services, offering fares starting at Rs 5 and capped at Rs 70, are aimed at providing a more affordable and efficient way to travel in a city long known for its traffic congestion. The fare structure is distance-based, with slabs across the different corridors. For the East-West Metro (Green Line), which now connects Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, travel up to 2 km costs Rs 5, while the end-to-end journey is Rs 70. The Yellow Line, connecting the airport, charges Rs 5 for the shortest distance (Airport to Jessore Road). A ride from the Airport to Noapara costs Rs 20, while a longer journey to Esplanade or Chandni Chowk is Rs 40. The fare from the Airport to Howrah is Rs 50, and to Kavi Subhash, Rs 45. On the Orange Line, fares from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to various stations on the Blue and Green Lines are integrated, with the fare to Howrah Maidan being Rs 50. The fare from the Airport to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay is Rs 65. Green Line (Esplanade–Sealdah) The final 2.6 km stretch of the East-West Metro corridor now fully connects Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V. This line, featuring India's first underwater metro tunnel, will drastically reduce travel time between Howrah and Sealdah. The journey from Howrah to Sector V, which earlier cost a minimum of Rs 500 by cab, will now be possible for Rs 70. Yellow Line (Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar) The 7 km section is the first phase of a direct metro link to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. It connects the airport to Noapara, a key interchange with the Blue Line. A journey from Airport to Noapara will cost Rs 20, to Esplanade Rs 40, and to Kavi Subhash Rs 45. Orange Line (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay–Beleghata) The 4.4 km extension connects Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to Beleghata, serving important locations like Science City and nearby hospitals. The fare from Airport to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay is Rs 65. The inauguration marks a significant leap in Kolkata's metro expansion. In the three decades since 1984, when India's first metro was established in the city, only 27.99 km of track was built. In contrast, over 45 km of new lines have been added in the last 10 years — a 161% increase. The expanded network is expected to ease traffic congestion, boost economic growth, and improve daily commutes for millions of passengers.

IRCTC's 60-day rule: Planning to travel this festive season? What passengers should know about Indian Railways' reduced booking window for train tickets

Repres The festive season in India always brings a surge in train ticket demand, as migrant workers head home for Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath. The change, effective November 1, 2024, has intensified the scramble for seats and creating confusions on the actual right time to book tickets ahead of the festive season, when demand traditionally surges as migrant workers travel home. Shorter booking window Effective November 1, 2024, the new rule allows ticket reservations 60 days ahead of the journey date (61 days for trains reaching intermediate stations the next day). Select intercity express services retain shorter booking periods. For example, tickets for October 19, 2025, travel open on August 20, 2025. High demand, few options- When to book? Despite the 60-day window, festival tickets often sell out within minutes. Passengers unable to secure confirmed seats are forced to rely on costlier and uncertain Tatkal quotas. To improve chances, experts, quoted by Economic Times advise logging onto the IRCTC portal at 8 am on the opening day of reservations. Booking clarity Reservation status appears directly on tickets—either confirmed (with berth details), RAC, or waitlisted. Tools like the traindate booking calculator can help passengers plan by showing when the advance reservation period begins.
