During the uncertain times of Covid-19, a dream was born – a vision of giving, kindness, and hope.
That dream belonged to Lindiwe Johnson, affectionately known as 'Mam J' among her circles. It began as a simple call for donations and transformed into a movement of compassion.
On Saturday, May 31, in the early hours of the chilly Highveld morning, that dream saw its second edition come to life.
Braving the cold, Mam J and her dedicated team set off for Coronation, an informal settlement in KwaGuqa.
Their mission was to bring warmth and comfort to those in need. Preparation for this outreach effort had begun the previous year, as she rallied support from her church, family, and privileged community members, requesting donations of clothing, shoes, and other essentials.
The moment of distribution was one of overwhelming emotion. Faces of the young and old lit up with joy, and the gratitude was undeniable.
'Siyabonga' – meaning 'Thank you' – rang through the air, repeated thousands of times by those receiving the much-needed donations. The energy was profound, the appreciation immeasurable.
For Mam J, the success of this initiative was not hers alone. With humility, she expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the event possible.
'I would like to thank God Almighty for the strength, wisdom, and insight given, Pastor and Lady Pastor Mabena, and the entire congregation of Bethel Ministries Outreach Centre based in Tasbet Park. To the team that assisted on the day, my family and friends, and local business owners Collen Ncongwane and Thabiso Mogane – your kindness and support made this day unforgettable,' said Mam J with tears in her eyes, telling the community that she will be back before winter is over.

R10 can change a life

In the heart of eMalahleni, Jabez Food Bank stands as a pillar of support for struggling families and individuals, offering not just food but dignity, hope, and care. Unlike many other institutions, Jabez goes beyond traditional food aid, providing clothing, fresh vegetables, and essential household items to those in need, ensuring that every person who benefits from their services receives more than just a meal. Currently, the organisation supplies monthly dry grocery parcels to nearly 70 families, ensuring consistent nourishment for those facing hardships. In addition, their weekly frozen vegetable and pasta meal distribution reaches all families registered with any food project in the city. Their commitment to immediate relief extends to daily fresh bread, rolls, and other food items, guaranteeing sustenance for many struggling households. Jabez's generosity does not stop at food – they provide monthly clothing distributions, allowing each registered family member to choose three sets of free clothing. Furthermore, on request, they offer furniture, linen, and kitchenware, helping individuals build a more stable and comfortable living environment. In a remarkable effort to assist the homeless, Jabez serves daily breakfast and lunch, ensuring that those living on the streets do not go hungry. What sets Jabez apart is their holistic approach – they integrate clothing, vegetables, and fresh products into their food programmes, enhancing the quality of life for their beneficiaries. However, sustaining these initiatives requires community support, and Jabez is calling on individuals and businesses to contribute to their life-changing work. 'God has placed it on my heart to extend our care beyond our own family, reaching others in need with kindness and compassion,' said Odette Rossouw. Their latest project is simple yet impactful: For just R10, anyone can purchase a Jabez food card and gift it to someone in need. This card allows a homeless individual to receive two meals, offering them comfort and relief during difficult times. Jabez Food Bank continues to make a difference, but they can't do it alone. The eMalahleni community's generosity is vital in ensuring that more people receive food, clothing, and hope for a better tomorrow. Those interested in contributing or supporting their mission are encouraged to get involved because even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. Contact Odette at: 072 704 9048.
