Meghalaya police to produce Sonam & four accused before court in Shillong
Shillong, June 11 (UNI) A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police will produce Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, before a local court in Shillong on Wednesday, officials said.
Sonam was brought to Shillong by the state police early on Wednesday from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport in Assam after she voluntarily surrendered at the Nanganj Police Station in Ghazipur district on Sunday night.
She was taken to Ganesh Das Hospital in Shillong on Wednesday morning for a routine medical examination.
The four other accused — Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and Anand Kurmi — the key conspirators in the murder case have also been brought to Shillong and will be produced before a court.
Police said the murder was allegedly plotted by Sonam and her boyfriend Raj Singh Kushwaha, a few days after their wedding on May 11 in Indore.
Raja was murdered on May 23. His decomposed body was found on June 2 from a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong parking lot at Riat Arliang in Sohra.
Sonam, together with three others, after allegedly committing the murder of Raja, left Sohra and boarded a train to Indore from Assam's main city of Guwahati on May 24, police sources said.
Meghalaya Police, which codenamed the investigation as 'Operation Honeymoon', had collected evidence from the residences and other places frequented by the accused in Indore and Ghazipur.
The SIT has seized a machete, believed to be the murder weapon, which was recovered near Raja's body. The other items recovered at the crime scene include a woman's white shirt, a strip of Pentra 40 tablets, part of an LCD screen from a mobile phone, and a smartwatch worn by the deceased.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has promised to fast-track the case related to the brutal murder of Raja
"Whatever steps need to be taken from our side we will do. We will try to fast-track things to ensure justice for Raja,' Sangma said.

"Sonam Raghuvanshi Used Burqa To Escape, Was In Indore When Raja's Body Was Found": Cop
All five accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon killing - wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, her lover Kushwaha and three alleged hitmen Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi - have admitted to their crime, said the police on Friday. The Meghalaya Police would take all five accused in the case to the crime spot at Sohra-Cherrapunji areas of the East Khasi Hills district next week for reconstruction of the crime, officials said. The newly-wed couple - Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi - from Madhya Pradesh's Indore went missing from a village near Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on May 23, two days after they landed in the northeastern state on their honeymoon. They were married on May 11. The man's body was retrieved from a 200-foot deep gorge on June 2. Wife Sonam, said police, surrendered at a police station in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Monday. "The murder was planned right before Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam's wedding. Raj Kushwaha is the mastermind behind this and Sonam is his partner in crime. The three killers were Raj's friends, and one among them is his cousin," Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Syiem Vivek, who is overseeing the investigation, told NDTV. "Since February this year, the planning was going on about how to make Sonam disappear. Two ideas were under consideration to make her disappear: first, Sonam should be shown jumping into the river; second, someone should be murdered and the body should be burnt presented as Sonam's. But the accused could not implement these plans. The plan to murder Raja was made 11 days before his marriage," said the officer. Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, was in love with Raj Kushwaha, 21, and had warned her family of "consequences" if she was pressured to marry Raja Raghuvanshi, police sources said. As per the preliminary autopsy report, Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, was hit twice, once each on the back and front of his head. "This is not a contract killing, however, an investigation regarding the same is underway. Raj had paid the three hitmen Rs 50,000 each," said the police officer. Raja Raghuvanshi was told by his wife Sonam that she would let him consummate the marriage only after making an offering at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, investigators had said on Wednesday. "When Sonam and Raja reached Guwahati to visit Kamakhya after marriage, the killers had already reached Guwahati on 19 May. Their initial plan was to kill Raja in Guwahati itself. But Sonam had planned to go to Shillong and Sohra. Therefore, this plan was shelved," said the officer. "After that, they reached Nongriat. Thereafter, all of them attacked Raja and killed him and hid his body. They left soon after," said the officer. After this, the officer said, Sonam wore a burqa offered by one of the hitmen and reached Guwahati in a taxi. "Then from Guwahati she took a bus and went to Siliguri, from Siliguri she went to Patna, from Patna she took a bus to Ara, from Ara she took a train to Lucknow, from Lucknow she took a bus to Indore," said the officer, detailing her movements after the murder. "After the three hitmen were arrested, Sonam was told by Raj to leave Indore and tell her family that she was kidnapped," said the officer. The day Raja's body was found, on June 2, Sonam was in Indore, said the officer. Sonam was in Indore from June 25 to 8, the officer said. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya police is probing the sensational murder.

AIADMK and BJP will evolve a common minimum programme: Annamalai
COIMBATORE: Former BJP state president K Annamalai on Thursday said there are ideological differences between the and his party as the former is supporting a two-language policy while the latter is supporting a three-language policy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the leaders of the two parties would sit together to decide on a common minimum programme (CMP), he said. He said the CMP would be drafted before the upcoming assembly elections. 'Both parties will work together based on the CMP,' he said while addressing reporters in Coimbatore. Annamalai criticised the special investigation team (SIT) of the CB-CID that investigated the Anna University . He said a video of another woman was found on the mobile phone seized from A Gnanasekaran, who has been sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment in the Anna University rape case. 'The SIT failed to investigate the identity of the woman, and the matter was concealed without a proper inquiry,' he said. 'We approached the lawyer of the rape survivor to file a petition, seeking a CBI inquiry over the sexual assault case. Gnanasekaran's phone contained a video of a woman, and the SIT team failed to trace her for further investigation. The police should trace her and take appropriate action,' said Annamalai. Annamalai, who released the DMK files last year, is facing a defamation case filed against him by former Union minister T R Baalu. 'Those who filed defamation can be crossed in the case. I am going to cross-examine T R Baalu on June 24 and 25 in a Chennai court over the defamation case. I will question him on how he and his family members earned the wealth,' he said.

Pakistan's record on terrorism is very clear: India
New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) 'Pakistan's track record is very clear,' India said on Thursday as it sought to remind the US about Islamabad's history of supporting terrorism, including granting of shelter to Osama Bin Laden. The assertion by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came a day after US Central Command Chief General Michael Kurilla praised Pakistan, saying it was a 'phenomenal counter-terrorism partner' in the fight against terrorism and also commended it for support in operations against ISIS. 'We all know Pahalgam attack is only the recent example of cross-border terrorism. I would remind you that only recently one of the conspirators of 26/11 Tahawwur Rana was extradited from the US to India,' Jaiswal said during the weekly briefing. Rana, Pakistani origin Canadian citizen, is associated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit and was one of the key plotter of Mumbai terror attack of 2008. 'Obviously none of us have forgotten that Pakistan gave shelter to Osama bin Laden. It is significant that the person and you would be aware that Dr Shakeel Afridi, who helped locate Osama Bin Laden is still imprisoned by Pakistani military,' he added. Laden, chief of Al-Qaida terror network, was found and killed by Special Forces of America in May 2011 in a surgical operation at a residential house in Abbottabad, near Pakistan's capital Islamabad and close to military cantonment.
