World Cup tickets at stake as Africa's best collide in U20 AFCON quarter-finals

CAF12-05-2025
The race for Africa's four coveted spots at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025 reaches a boiling point as the quarter-final matches of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations are played across three Egyptian cities on Monday.
With a World Cup ticket guaranteed for each of the four semi-finalists, today's matches are no longer just about continental pride—they are about survival, legacy, and securing a place on the global stage.
'This is like a final,' Nigeria coach Aliyu Zubairu said ahead of his team's titanic clash with defending champions Senegal.
'We know what to expect. It's a big match for both teams because the winner is going to the World Cup. We must be disciplined and determined for the full 90 minutes.'
The Flying Eagles, Africa's most decorated U-20 side with seven titles, enter the tie unbeaten but under scrutiny following a nervy 2-2 draw with Kenya.
Their opponents, Senegal, stumbled early but revived their campaign with a decisive 2-0 win over DR Congo. It's a heavyweight battle with high stakes, as both sides know only victory will do.
Later in Suez, hosts Egypt will carry a nation's hopes against high-flying Ghana.
The Black Satellites, winners of Group C and former world champions themselves, arrive as favourites—but Egyptian coach Osama Nabih is banking on resilience and home support.
'We're going through difficult circumstances due to injuries and fatigue,' Nabih admitted.
'But we are armed with a fighting spirit and determined to make the fans happy. We know the importance of this match—it is our chance to qualify for the World Cup after 12 years.'
Morocco, unbeaten in the group stage and firm title contenders, will face the competition's surprise package, Sierra Leone.
The West Africans stunned Egypt 4-1 in the group stage and carry the hopes of a nation making its first U20 AFCON appearance.
'We respect Sierra Leone, but we know our strengths,' said Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi. 'We'll rely on our technique, combinations, and tactical organisation. We must stay true to our identity.'
In Ismailia, South Africa's Amajita will take on DR Congo in what could be the most finely poised fixture of the day.
South Africa were steady, if unspectacular, during the group phase, while the Congolese showed both firepower and vulnerability. It's a tactical battle that could be decided by fine margins.
These quarter-finals are more than just knock-out fixtures—they're make-or-break showdowns that will define careers and rewrite histories.
With a place in Chile on the line, expect drama, grit, and no shortage of heartbreak.

Reports: Mostafa Mohamed Move to Neom Hits Nantes Roadblock

Rana Atef It was reported on Monday that talks between FC Nantes and Saudi club Neom for the transfer of Egyptian striker Mustafa Mohamed have reportedly failed, according to Africafoot, amid disagreements over the financial terms of the deal. Despite advanced negotiations and Mohamed's approval, Nantes held firm on their $10 million demand plus a resale percentage. While Mohamed was keen on joining Neom, the Ligue 1 side's refusal to lower their valuation has stalled the transfer indefinitely. Earlier reports from Asharq Al-Awsat confirmed that the player had agreed in principle to the Saudi offer and that official negotiations had begun between the two clubs. Neom FC are looking to build a high-profile squad capable of competing at the top level of the Saudi Pro League. The club had targeted Mohamed as a cornerstone of its attacking line, especially alongside Egyptian defender Ahmed Hegazi. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Man City Move to Secure Rodri with Mega Deal Amid Madrid Links

Rana Atef Manchester City are ready to hand Rodri a massive pay rise in a new contract aimed at keeping the Ballon d'Or winner at the Etihad long-term, according to reports. The Spanish midfielder—widely regarded as the best in the world following a dominant 2024—has recently been linked with a high-profile move to Real Madrid. But City have no intention of letting their midfield general go, and have swiftly shut down any interest from the La Liga giants. Rodri is currently tied to the club until 2027, but City want clarity now—well before the final two years of his deal—by locking him down with fresh terms that reflect his importance both on and off the pitch. According to Fabrizio Romano, City have prepared a lucrative offer that would make Rodri the second-highest earner in Pep Guardiola's squad. Talks have been ongoing behind the scenes for months, with the club keen to reward not only Rodri's elite performances, but also his growing leadership role in a team undergoing a generational shift. Despite Real Madrid's interest, Romano reports that Rodri is focused on staying at City. The 29-year-old is settled in Manchester and has shown no real desire to return to La Liga at this stage of his career. Inside the Etihad, club officials believe Rodri is future captain material—someone who could lead the squad in the post-Guardiola era thanks to his consistency, mentality, and experience on the biggest stages. While nothing is signed yet and Madrid could reignite their interest in 2026 if the situation drags, all signs currently point to a long-term future in sky blue for one of City's greatest-ever midfielders. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
