Three judges appointed to Supreme Court
Three judges were appointed to the Supreme Court on Thursday (May 29, 2025).
The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended the appointment of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Bombay High Court's Justice A.S. Chandurkar as judges of the top court.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced their appointment on X.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Justices (i) N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, (ii) Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, High Court of Gauhati and (iii) A.S. Chandurkar, Judge, High Court of Bombay as Judges of the Supreme Court of India," he said.
Their names were recommended against the three existing vacancies of judges in the top court following the superannuation of ex-chief justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices Abhay S. Oka and Hrishikesh Roy.

SC allows Trump to revoke legal status for 500,000 migrants
Washington, May 30 (UNI) US President Donald Trump's administration can temporarily revoke the legal status of over 500,000 migrants living in the US, the US Supreme Court ruled on Friday. The ruling put on hold a previous federal judge's order stopping the administration from ending the "parole" immigration programme, established by former President Joe Biden. The programme protected immigrants fleeing economic and political turmoil in their home countries, media reported. The new order puts roughly 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela at risk of being deported, BBC reported. Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor, two of the court's three liberal justices, dissented. The parole programme allows immigrants temporary status to work and live in the US for two years because of "urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit", according to the US government. The Trump administration had filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal judge in Massachusetts blocked the administration from ending the programme, also known as CHNV humanitarian parole. The White House "celebrated" the opportunity to deport 500,000 "invaders", White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller local media. "The Supreme Court justly stepped in". Sanjay Raut demands resignation of Eknath Shinde over SC strictures on twin tunnel tender
NASHIK: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut demanded the resignation of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde , who is the minister for public works (public enterprises), over Supreme Court strictures on the MMRDA tender process. Raut, who was in Jalgaon on Saturday, said, "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands against corrupt practices, he should immediately call for the resignation of Eknath Shinde over the issue." The Supreme Court passed strictures on the tender related to the Thane Ghodbunder Bhayandar twin tunnel. Raut alleged, 'There was a direct appreciation of Rs 3,000 crore in the Rs 14,000 crore contract for the twin tunnel. L&T Company challenged the tender in the Supreme Court, which passed strictures." Raut claimed that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was also unwilling to take action against corruption in the state. "After the Supreme Court's strictures, all that Fadnavis said was that he would not tolerate corruption in the bureaucracy. How has Fadnavis failed to see the corruption in this case and failed to take any action against it," he said. Raut also commented on NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar joining the BJP camp, saying that those with Pawar were confident that he would not join communal forces. 'Pawar has been the torchbearer of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar ideologies, and all those who are with Sharad Pawar are confident that he will never join hands with such forces,' said Raut.

Experts to farmers: Punjab's draft agri policy gets universal thumbs up
Even as the state government continues to delay the adoption of its Punjab Agriculture Policy-2023, experts across disciplines have hailed the draft as an excellent document with some limitations that can be removed at the time of implementation. Experts said that the 200-page document offers a comprehensive roadmap for reviving the state's ailing farm sector. They praised the draft policy for its depth, innovation, and forward-thinking recommendations. They described it as a potential game-changer — if implemented with commitment and urgency. From scientists to economists and farmer leaders, voices from across the agricultural spectrum have urged the government to act swiftly on the policy. Gurdev Singh Khush, a renowned Indian-American plant geneticist and rice breeder who is known as the 'Father of Super Rice', in written communication to the committee members, said that he enjoyed the draft thoroughly. 'The chapter on the good old agriculture of the past brought back memories of my childhood. The section on Green Revolution captures how it transformed Indian agriculture. Making Punjab's farming healthier, profitable, and globally competitive should be a cherished goal. The concept of Natural Growing Areas is insightful. Marketing is rightly emphasised, and institutions like AMRII and IAMS are essential. The chapter on ecosystem and climate change is well-balanced. The alarming water and energy scenario calls for urgent implementation of the policy's recommendations. I found the document immensely informative — truly an Encyclopedia of Punjab Agriculture. It reflects months of dedicated work,' said Khush, who has won World Food Prize (1996), Japan Prize, Wolf Prize, and Golden Sickle Awards. Prof Ranjit Singh Ghuman, a renowned agricultural economist and a member of high-powered committee established by the Supreme Court to address the grievances of farmers, said that despite three policy drafts on Agriculture over the past decade, Punjab still lacks an official agriculture policy. The first draft of 58 pages was submitted in March 2013 but was never adopted. The second draft of 21 pages submitted in 2018 met with the same fate. An 11-member committee headed by Sukhpal Singh submitted a comprehensive draft on October 13, 2023. 'While building on earlier efforts, this version includes more detailed and innovative recommendations. It must be implemented,' Ghuman said, adding that the limitations should be addressed, and the policy must align with industrial strategy to tackle rising unemployment and declining agri-sector jobs, while factoring in processing, cooperatives, and market linkages. BKU (Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan also hailed the draft policy and said that the Punjab government should implement it at the earliest. Darshan Pal Singh, president of Krantikari Kisan Union, said that the majority of the recommendations in the 2023 Agricultural Policy are pro-Punjab and pro-farmer. 'It should be implemented to address the ongoing agrarian crisis in the state. Along with BKU (Dakaunda) and BKU (Ugrahan), we have demanded that the government adopt this policy. In my opinion, it is a much-needed step forward,' he said.
