Mortal Kombat II Movie Poster Compares Johnny Cage With Tom Cruise

Miami Herald15-07-2025
While we eagerly await the trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the highly anticipated sequel to the R-rated 2020 cinematic reboot based on the long-running video game saga, producer Todd Garner and original Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon are teasing us with a poster for the movie... Well, not THE movie, but an in-universe movie starring Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
Fans who remember the first movie know that it ended with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) searching for more champions to defend Earthrealm from the forces of Outworld. One such warrior was Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character who was played by Linden Ashby in the original 1995 film.
In this sequel, Cage is played by Karl Urban, best known for his role as "Bones" McCoy in the 2009 Star Trek revival and its sequels, as well as Judge Dredd in 2012's Dredd. In a bit of cheeky humor, the early marketing for Mortal Kombat II has not been about the film's story, but about the fictional career of Johnny Cage, the biggest movie star in the world of the film. In a nod the biggest movie star of the real world, the in-universe poster for "Uncaged Fury" is a clear homage to 1996's Mission Impossible and its globe-trotting spy thriller antics. Essentially, it's saying that Johnny Cage is the Mortal Kombat universe's equivalent to Tom Cruise.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie earned mixed reviews from fans and critics, but it was a decent start that nailed the tone of what a Mortal Kombat movie should be: brutally violent and full of deep lore, but with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and slightly campy sensibilities. I hope the sequel can build on the foundation of the original, upping the violence, developing the characters, and building out some of the relationships that fans of the games have followed for decades. We'll find out how it all shakes out when Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on October 24, 2025.

Prepare to Celebrate 60 Years of ‘Star Trek' With Nacelle's Nostalgic Figures

Star Trek turns 60 next year, and the franchise is preparing to celebrate in style, especially with a brand new show on the way in Starfleet Academy. But outside of streaming, you'll be able to celebrate in style with Nacelle's new line of Star Trek action figures, which will dedicate a whole wave to the original series next year—and io9 has your first up-close look at one of them. As previously (and exclusively) revealed by io9 this past Friday, the third wave of Nacelle's Star Trek line is set to release in 2026. While Nacelle made waves announcing its Trek line by eschewing the typical process of making a Captain Picard and Captain Kirk and then calling it a day—with wave one including an eclectic mix of deep-cut characters, from Tuvix, to Weyoun, to Admiral Jellico—wave 3 of the series will buck that trend and go all in on the original Trek as an anniversary celebration. All the main crew and then some will be part of the wave, including Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Doctor McCoy, Nurse Chapel, Yeoman Rand, and a mystery two-pack being kept under wraps. And, of course, that lineup wouldn't be complete without Enterprise's premiere xenolinguist and communications officer, Nyota Uhura, who you can see below in all her action figure render glory, teased at SDCC during Nacelle's panel, but making its online debut here on io9! As you can see, at least one of Uhura's accessories will be a classic phaser rifle—but you can expect her to come with a few more, based on Nacelle's plans for their other Trek figures. We'll at least need a separate teeny-tiny communication earpiece, or an alternate head of her using it, for sure! Wave 3 of Nacelle's Star Trek line is expected to launch some time in 2026. However, if you're like me and yearn to own a Weyoun action figure, you can preorder wave 1 now, due for release in late 2025. Want more io9 news? The premiere of Strange New Worlds Season 3 will feature two back-to-back episodes, both with very different vibes. The first episode is called "Hegemony Part II," and is the conclusion of the cliffhanger of Season 2. At the end of that season, the USS Enterprise had a chunk of the crew kidnapped by the Gorn, while Captain Pike (Anson Mount) was given orders to retreat. So, "Hegemony Part II" is all about resolving that very specific mess and getting the band back together. Meanwhile, the second episode is called "Wedding Bell Blues," and from the looks of this trailer, this seems to be a rom-com style episode with a sci-fi twist! This is a defining feature of Strange New Worlds as a whole; one episode can be very serious and full of action, while the next can be light, funny, and deeply strange. 'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 3 Streams Sooner Than You Think

After the two-episode Season 3 premiere last week, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't slowing down at all. In fact, the next episode of Season 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori," is coming at you at warp speed. Here's what to know about when exactly you can stream the new episode, what the episode is about, and why you might want to rewatch one very specific episode in Season 2 before watching this new one. No spoilers ahead. Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3 Release Date The third episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, "Shuttle to Kenfori," will hit Paramount+ on Thursday, July 24. The reason this is the third episode overall this season is that last week, SNW Season 3 dropped Episodes 1 and 2 at the same New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3 Streaming Time Strange New Worlds, like other Paramount+ shows, drops new episodes at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. So, very early on Thursday morning, or late on Wednesday night, depending on how you look at it. What is the Plot of Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3? "Shuttle to Kenfori" will feature Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) on a covert mission that will result in some tangos with the Klingons. While getting into the specifics of their mission would be a spoiler, viewers might want to refresh themselves with M'Benga's backstory from Season 2. In Season 2, Episode 8, "Under the Cloak of War," we learned the M'Benga had witnessed war crimes from one specific Klingon a few years back, and in the present, murdered that Klingon out of revenge. These details matter big time in "Shuttle to Kenfori." You don't absolutely need to watch "Under the Cloak of War" to understand "Shuttle to Kenfori," but it will probably enrich your viewing if you do. Plus, Babs Olusanmokun is a dynamic and exciting actor in both the Season 2 episode and the new Season 3 episode. Remember when he fought Timothée Chalamet in Dune? Some of that style of sci-fi action is on display in these M'Benga episodes of Strange New Worlds, proving that both the character and Olusanmokun are total badasses.'Strange New Worlds' Season 3, Episode 3 Streams Sooner Than You Think first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 22, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
