‘Mortal Kombat 2' trailer: Karl Urban is unleashed as Johnny Cage in blood-soaked sequel
Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, offering fans a brutal glimpse at the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation. The film is set to hit theatres on October 24. Leading the charge in the new footage is The Boys star Karl Urban, who joins the franchise as Johnny Cage — the cocky Hollywood action star turned fierce warrior. The trailer introduces Cage in true over-the-top fashion, as he delivers punishing blows and quips in a style that mirrors the videogame's blend of violence and attitude. Mortal Kombat 2 expands the roster of fan-favorite characters from the iconic fighting game series. Adeline Rudolph steps into the role of Kitana, the fan-wielding princess; Tati Gabrielle plays her ally-turned-enforcer Jade; Damon Herriman appears as the sinister necromancer Quan Chi; Martyn Ford is Shao Kahn, the Outworld emperor; and Ana Thu Nguyen portrays Queen Sindel. CJ Bloomfield and Desmond Chiam round out the Outworld royalty as Baraka and King Jerrod, respectively. Returning cast members include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. Simon McQuoid, who made his directorial debut with Mortal Kombat, is back at the helm. Judging by the trailer, the sequel aims to double down on what fans loved about the first including intense martial arts action, dark fantasy lore, and, of course, a healthy dose of graphic fatalities.

Mortal Kombat II Movie Poster Compares Johnny Cage With Tom Cruise
While we eagerly await the trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the highly anticipated sequel to the R-rated 2020 cinematic reboot based on the long-running video game saga, producer Todd Garner and original Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon are teasing us with a poster for the movie... Well, not THE movie, but an in-universe movie starring Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. Fans who remember the first movie know that it ended with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) searching for more champions to defend Earthrealm from the forces of Outworld. One such warrior was Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character who was played by Linden Ashby in the original 1995 film. In this sequel, Cage is played by Karl Urban, best known for his role as "Bones" McCoy in the 2009 Star Trek revival and its sequels, as well as Judge Dredd in 2012's Dredd. In a bit of cheeky humor, the early marketing for Mortal Kombat II has not been about the film's story, but about the fictional career of Johnny Cage, the biggest movie star in the world of the film. In a nod the biggest movie star of the real world, the in-universe poster for "Uncaged Fury" is a clear homage to 1996's Mission Impossible and its globe-trotting spy thriller antics. Essentially, it's saying that Johnny Cage is the Mortal Kombat universe's equivalent to Tom Cruise. The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie earned mixed reviews from fans and critics, but it was a decent start that nailed the tone of what a Mortal Kombat movie should be: brutally violent and full of deep lore, but with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and slightly campy sensibilities. I hope the sequel can build on the foundation of the original, upping the violence, developing the characters, and building out some of the relationships that fans of the games have followed for decades. We'll find out how it all shakes out when Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on October 24, 2025. Copyright The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved
