Lithuanian politicians taken to shelters after Belarus airspace violation alarm
Media reports stated that Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and Parliament Speaker Saulius Skvernelis were taken to safety as a precaution while the situation was being investigated.
Lithuania's President Gitanas Nausėda is currently on a foreign trip in Ireland.
Authorities were initially concerned that the unidentified flying object could be an Iranian-made Shahed drone of the type used by Russia in ongoing air strikes on Ukraine, the BNS news agency reported.
The Lithuanian army confirmed in a post on Facebook that the object was detected at 11:30 am local time (10:30 am CEST).
Fighter jets that were already in the air as part of the NATO Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission were scrambled to respond to the incident when the object fell to the ground around 1 kilometre from the border with Belarus.
A closer investigation revealed that the object was an unmanned, makeshift plane reportedly made of plywood and foam, and it did not pose any danger.
The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said it had often recorded cases of attempts to transport contraband cigarettes from Belarus into Lithuania using balloons or makeshift drones. — Euronews

Netherlands to send Patriot air defense systems to Poland, Polish minister says
The Netherlands will send two Patriot air defense systems and around 300 personnel to protect a hub for military aid to Ukraine in NATO ally Poland, the Polish defense minister said on Thursday. A prosecutor said on Thursday that the drone most likely came from the direction of Belarus, a close ally of Moscow that has backed Russia's war in Ukraine.

NATO to establish logistics base in Sweden: Govt
Sweden will host a NATO logistics headquarters in the town of Enkoping, northwest of Stockholm, to troop movements in Northern Europe, the government said Thursday. 'NATO presence in Sweden strengthens our security and deterrence. The logistics center assists the defense of NATO's northern flank,' Defense Minister Pal Jonson said. According to the government, the base will have around 70 personnel in peacetime. 'In a heightened state of alert and ultimately war, the headquarters will be able to expand to 160 personnel,' a government statement said. The armed forces has been tasked with making preparations and establishing the base so that it would be operable by the end of 2027. Jonson told public broadcaster SVT that the work at the center would 'involve transporting various supplies, such as fuel, ammunition and spare parts.' 'The aim is to be able to transport large amounts of equipment and personnel across Swedish territory,' Jonson said. The Nordic country dropped two centuries of military non-alignment and applied for membership in NATO in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, becoming its 32nd member in March 2024.

Iran's navy launches country's first military drill since 12-day war with Israel
Iran launched its first military exercise since the end of its 12-day war with Israel, state television reported Thursday, with navy vessels launching missiles at targets at sea in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. While such drills are routine in the Islamic Republic, the 'Sustainable Power 1404' exercise comes as authorities in Iran are trying to project strength in the wake of a war that saw Israel destroy air defense systems and bomb nuclear facilities and other sites. The state TV report said naval vessels would fire cruise missiles at targets and use drones over the open water. It did not immediately air any footage from the exercise. Iran's navy, estimated to have some 18,000 personnel, apparently avoided any major attack during the June war. The navy, based out of the port city of Bandar Abbas, patrols the Gulf of Oman, the Indian Ocean and the Caspian Sea, and broadly leaves the Persian Gulf and its narrow mouth, the Strait of Hormuz, to Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The Guard's naval forces are known for seizures of Western vessels during the breakdown of Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, as well as closely shadowing passing US Navy vessels coming into the region. Since the end of the war, Iran has increasingly insisted that it is ready to counter any future Israeli attack. Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh said that the country has equipped its forces with new missiles, in remarks reported Wednesday by the state-run IRNA news agency. 'In response to any potential enemy adventurism, our forces are prepared to use these new missiles effectively.' Meanwhile, Iran has suspended its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been monitoring its nuclear sites as Tehran enriched uranium to near weapons-grade levels amid the tensions. France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the European parties to Iran's nuclear deal, have warned that if Tehran doesn't reach a 'satisfactory solution' to its dispute with the IAEA by Aug. 31, they will trigger a 'snapback' reimposition of all United Nations sanctions on it previously lifted by the accord. While already stung by American sanctions since 2018, analysts warn that renewed UN sanctions could further weaken the country's ailing economy.
