Opposition's VP nominee Justice Sudershan Reddy headed expert panel on Telangana's caste survey
Telangana Congress leaders surprised too
An All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader from Telangana said the contribution of Justice Reddy in vetting the survey had brought him into close contact with the Congress leadership in the Centre. A top Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) leader told The Hindu that the role of Justice Reddy in submitting its recommendations of the Expert Group coupled with his roots in South India had worked in his favour as the Vice-President candidate. 'The choice is surprising to the Telangana Congress leaders also,' the leader mentioned.
The State government led by A. Revanth Reddy had successfully completed the socio-economic and caste survey launched in November 2024 and completed it in a record time to gather detailed data on caste, education, employment, income and political engagement and made it public in February 2025.
The report formed the basis for the government's pitch for 42% quota for Backward Classes (BC) in local bodies polls, which subsequently echoed across the country with the Congress taking up a campaign. In fact, the Mr. Revanth Reddy had referred to how the Expert Group led by Justice Sudershan Reddy had praised the survey as scientific, authentic, and reliable, and a potential model for the rest of the country. The expert group felt that the methodology adopted was thorough and exemplary. It recommended to use the data to fine-tune existing welfare schemes and design future policies focused on upliftment of weaker sections, and bridging inequalities.
The findings, which were tabled in both the Houses of Telangana Legislature, were later referred to the working Group headed by Justice Sudershan Reddy. The group headed by the former Supreme Court Judge was tasked with studying and interpreting the extensive data.
Farmer's family to legal profession
Justice Sudershan Reddy was born on 8th July, 1946, at Akula Mylaram of Kandakur mandal in Rangareddy district. He hails from an agricultural family. He studied in Hyderabad and graduated in Law from Osmania University. His legal career spans more than five decades.
After competing Law in 1971, Justice Reddy joined the office of a senior Advocate K. Pratap Reddy handling cases in the City Civil Court and gradually moving in to fight cases in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
He rose to become the Judge of High Court of Andhra Pradesh in 1995 and went on to head the Guwahati High Court as Chief Justice. In 2007, he was appointed as Judge of Supreme Court of India and retired in 2011.
Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy took to X (formerly Twitter) appealing to all Telugu parties to support the candidature of Justice Sudarshan Reddy, a distinguished jurist, in the upcoming Vice President electionS.

After CSDS psephologist deletes X post, BJP accuses Congress of making 'baseless claims' on voter fraud
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) accused the Congress of making 'baseless' claims about 'vote theft' and targeting the Election Commission of India in 'collusion' with a Delhi-based think tank. This came after Sanjay Kumar, a psephologist and a professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), who had shared voter data from two Maharashtra Assembly seats related to last year's State election in a post on X on Sunday (August 17, 2025), subsequently deleted his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), apologising for posting erroneous data. The post had claimed a significant decrease in voter numbers in two Assembly seats in the State election compared to the 2024 general election, which was held nearly six months earlier. 'Fake data' Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia lashed out at Mr. Kumar for posting 'false data' which he claimed was used by the Opposition to target the EC, calling it a 'dangerous game'. 'This survey organisation [CSDS] is nothing but a puppet at the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi who could not win people's trust. He needs such an organisation which can provide fake data and facts so that he can make baseless allegations,' Mr. Bhatia said. 'Congress leader Pawan Khera tweets on this and then deletes. Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations are also based on CSDS data,' he added. Deleting his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Mr. Kumar wrote on X, 'I sincerely apologise for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. An error occurred while comparing the data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in the row was misread by our Data team.' The erroneous tweet has since been removed, he said, adding, 'I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.'

A former prime minister of Mali is jailed on corruption allegations
A former prime minister of Mali was jailed Tuesday following allegations of corruption that he has denied, his lawyer told The Associated Press. Choguel Maïga, 67, led the civilian wing of the country's military junta until his November 2024 dismissal days after he criticized it for postponing elections. He has continued to publicly criticize it. His lawyer, Cheick Oumar Konaré, said the Supreme Court had notified the former prime minister of the charges filed against him by Mali's prosecutor general and ordered that he be placed in custody. The charges follow a report by the West African nation's auditor general on the management of public funds while Maïga was prime minister. No trial date has been set. Earlier this month, another former prime minister, Moussa Mara, was imprisoned after tweeting his support for jailed critics of the junta, which has ruled since coups in 2020 and the following year. In June, Gen. Assimi Goita was granted an additional five years in power despite the junta's earlier promises of a return to civilian rule by March 2024. The junta dissolved political parties in May.
