EVSC students help kick off Red Cross Month
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Red Cross shows up in times of need, and those needs range from assisting after a tornado destroys a community, to a family finding shelter after a house fire. The Red Cross is teaming up with the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation so younger members of the community can help some of the littlest victims of disasters.
Volunteers say most people are emotional at a disaster scene, b out young people are even more devastated. One of the ways to comfort children is to give them something like a toy to hold. That is where several schooles from the EVSC have stepped in.
The students are making stuffed animals to give to the Red Cross to hand out to young victims of fires or natural disasters.
'This campaign really is more than just collecting stuffed animals,' said Darla Hoover, EVSC's Chief of Schools and Instructional Core. 'It's actually about showing compassion and caring for children who are going through a really hard time.'
Red Cross officials also say they hope this will encourage students to give back in the future. This collection kicks off National Red Cross Month, which has been recognized every year in the U.S. since 1943.

R-Center Summer recreation announced, all City pools to open
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — During a press conference on Thursday, it was announced that summer recreation programming in Rochester is scheduled to begin on June 30. This year will mark the first time since 2019 that all five Rochester City pools and Durand Eastman Park's beach will be open to residents, as the City of Rochester now has enough lifeguards available. A local shortage of lifeguards, a trend seen across the nation, led to the inability to open outdoor pools such as those located at Adams Street and Trenton Pamela Jackson R-Centers. City officials credit the increase in lifeguards to a 'multi-year commitment' to train and employ young people to become Red Cross-certified lifeguards for the summer. 'The unfortunate streak of Rochester not being able to open all of its pools ends this summer because our employees found solutions outside of the box and developed and trained our own crews of lifeguards,' Mayor Malik Evans said on Thursday. Why you may not want to use last summer's sunscreen Funding received from the NY SWIMS Program to eliminate the swim equity gap provided the opportunity for Rochester to develop a Lifeguard Development Course through the Department of Recreation and Human Services. R-Centers throughout Rochester are anticipated to open at 8:30 a.m., with most facilities closing at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some of the centers will also be open to the public during the day on Saturdays. Children who are registered at the R-Centers as members will also have the opportunity to receive free breakfast and lunch while they enjoy the programming and activities the facilities have to offer. Recreational activities cater to a variety of interests and include opportunities to participate in things such as sports programs, dance classes, cooking classes, lawn games, and board games. HCS announces appointment of 2 assistant superintendents
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Hopkins County Schools (HCS) has announced the appointment of two new assistant superintendents for the district. HCS says the two new appointments include a current district administrator and another with 'deep ties' to the district. Dr. Ann Love, district director of human resources, and Jason Clark, most recently an assistant superintendent in Caldwell County, will start their new positions on July 1. Ride inspectors call safety at Holiday World 'top notch' 'Both Dr. Love and Mr. Clark exemplify servant leadership and are committed to strengthening instruction, supporting staff, and advancing outcomes for all students,' said Dr. Damon Fleming, incoming superintendent. 'Please join me in welcoming them to their new roles.' Officials say Clark has been assistant superintendent for Caldwell County Schools since 2021. His 27-year career in education includes stints as principal of Browning Springs Middle School; district director of secondary instruction and district assessment coordinator for HCS and assistant principal, curriculum specialist, and teacher at Madisonville North Hopkins High School. HCS officials say Clark earned a Master of Arts in Education in School Administration, a second Master of Arts in Education, and a Bachelor of Science in Teaching from University of Southern Indiana. He also holds a Certification for School Superintendent. UE receives $33K in grants for visual arts and student experience HCS says Dr. Love has served as HCS director of HR since 2018. She has a 27-year career in education, all in Hopkins County Schools. She previously was principal of Grapevine Elementary School and instructional leader and teacher at Pride Elementary School. According to HCS, Dr. Love holds a Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership from Oakland City University; a Master of Arts in School Administration from Murray State University; a Rank 1 in General Education and Master of Arts in K-12 Education, both from Indiana Wesleyan University; and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University.
