Alena Murang's latest single released in connection with World Biodiversity Day

Borneo Post19-05-2025

Alena says through her music, she is inviting the listeners to remember the wisdom passed down by the indigenous communities, that is to live in a balance with the land.
KUCHING (May 19): Alena Murang has released her new single, 'Jaga Alam', in connection with World Biodiversity Day and also the upcoming Gawai Dayak festivities.
The musician and cultural guardian, in a statement yesterday, hailed the number as 'a heartfelt call to protect the Earth's forests, and all forms of life calling it home'.
The single 'Jaga Alam', which means 'taking care of nature' in Bahasa Malaysia, is sung in the national language, but there is a special line among the verses that is sung in Alena's native Kelabit language.
'Through my music, I invite the listeners to remember the wisdom passed down by the indigenous communities, that is to live in a balance with the land.
'In my Kelabit culture, nature is not something separate from us – it is a part of who we are.
'Caring for the land is also a central part of Gawai celebration, which is to give thanks for the rice harvest.
'This song is a gentle reminder that nature will always take care of us, if we take care of it,' said the artiste, also a sape' player.
Adding on, Alena also described the new song as 'a blend of the meditative tones of the sape' with simple yet powerful lyrics, echoing a message of respect and responsibility towards nature'.
'With this release, I hope to contribute not only through music, but also by raising awareness of indigenous perspectives on conservation and their love for the land.'
As one of the few female sape' players in the world and a voice for her community, Alena continues to use music as a bridge between worlds – past and present, nature and people, as well as tradition and change.
'The World Biodiversity Day, celebrated on May 22 each year, is a global reminder of how connected we are to the natural world, whilst Gawai is a day to be grateful for the food that nature gives us,' she added.
The music video can be viewed on YouTube, and the audio is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
Alena and Joshua Maran are credited as the songwriters, with the lyrics written by Alena. Alena Murang entertainment Gawai Dayak lead local artistes

Beijing woos US influencers with free trip to show ‘real China'

China seeks to enlist young social media influencers from the United States to collaborate with its local content creators. - Photo: AFP BEIJING: China is inviting American influencers to join a 10-day, all-expense paid trip through the country in July, as part of Beijing's efforts to boost people-to-people exchanges and showcase the 'real China'. The initiative, titled 'China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Programme', seeks to enlist young social media influencers with at least 300,000 followers to collaborate with Chinese content creators, according to recruitment posts by Chinese state-affiliated media outlets, including the China Youth Daily. While relations between China and the US have deteriorated in recent months over issues including geopolitics, technology and trade, the programme marks an effort to boost cultural exchanges. In 2024, President Xi Jinping had called for more exchanges between Chinese and American universities, after previously announcing a plan to welcome 50,000 American students to China. Another post in College Daily, a publication particularly targeting Chinese students in North America, specified that applicants for the exchange programme based in the US should be active on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and X, and should 'love Chinese culture' and 'have no history of bad behaviours'. It called on Chinese students overseas to encourage influencers in their circle to apply, and said the successful candidates will get China's official invite as well as special assistance from the state to process their visas. The trip intends to take the participants across five Chinese cities – Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing, and will cover China's e-commerce hubs, the headquarter of companies such as Xiaohongshu Technology Co and BYD Co. The influencers will also partake in cultural activities such as Taichi and be able to live-stream their trip to the Great Wall, according to the posts. Working with Chinese social media influencers on ideas, and getting their content promoted by China's state media will be part of the deal. Social media content from Western influencers travelling through China post-Covid-19 have won praise from the state media for their authentic portrayal of everyday life in the country. In April, American streamer IShowSpeed's visit to China sparked widespread curiosity among fans about advancements in Chinese technology. The authorities have tapped social media influencers to check negative information and promote positive contents. In 2023, think-tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute analysed over 120 foreign influencers, mostly active on Chinese social media, received the state's help to grow their influence in return for content that praises and spreads Beijing's narrative. - Bloomberg

Ms Rachel snaps back at US media over Olivia Munn, highlights Gaza children

She clarified that she harboured no ill will towards Munn and what upset her was the media's tendency to amplify minor celebrity opinions while ignoring life-and-death issues. Popular children's content creator Ms Rachel has fired back at US media coverage after American actress Olivia Munn reportedly criticised kids' shows with a style similar to hers. - Photo: INSTAGRAM / @missrachelforlittles SHAH ALAM - Popular children's content creator Ms Rachel has fired back at US media coverage after American actress Olivia Munn reportedly criticised kids' shows with a style similar to hers. But instead of fuelling celebrity drama, Ms Rachel used the moment to redirect attention to what she saw as a far more urgent issue which was the suffering of children in Gaza. Munn, who recently revealed her distaste for certain children's programmes, was quoted by American monthly magazine Parents as disliking shows "like Ms Rachel's." Ms Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso is the face behind the widely followed Toddler Learning Videos YouTube channel, known for educational content that supports speech development and emotional engagement. Since its launch in 2019, her channel has grown to over 15.2 million subscribers. Responding under the Parents' Instagram comment section, Ms Rachel through her account @msrachelforlittles wrote: "I'd rather you cover my advocacy for kids in Gaza." Her reply quickly gained traction, with hundreds of followers echoing her sentiment and criticising Parents for focusing on celebrity comments instead of highlighting Ms Rachel's humanitarian work. In a follow-up Instagram post, Ms Rachel elaborated: "I'd rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, the largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands and thousands killed—no medical care, no education, no homes... do better!!!" She clarified that she harboured no ill will towards Munn and was uninterested in whether the actress watched her show. What upset her, she said, was the media's tendency to amplify minor celebrity opinions while ignoring life-and-death issues. "Not against her at all and don't care that she doesn't watch the show—all my love to her and her family—disappointed in the outlets," she wrote in the comment section of her post. Ms Rachel and Gazan three-year-old double amputee, Rahaf. - Photo: INSTAGRAM / @missrachelforlittles Ms Rachel has been open in her support for Gaza, recently featuring three-year-old Rahaf Saed, a double amputee from Palestine in one of her videos. According to Ms Rachel said Rahaf lost both her legs after an Israeli airstrike hit her home in Gaza in August 2024. She said Rahaf has since received medical care and shelter through international aid. "It's so clear what needs to be done for kids in Gaza by the global community," she wrote. More Like This
