Mission: Impossible 8 premiere in Cannes - and is savaged by film critics
It was supposed to be the biggest blockbuster debut of the year – but Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (M:I 8) may have just hit a critical landmine in Cannes.
Tom Cruise made his grand return to the Croisette for the glitzy world premiere of the latest instalment in the long-running spy franchise.
There were fireworks (literally), standing ovations (briefly), and a whole lot of stunts (obviously).
But some early reviews have been less champagne-popping and more Molotov-cocktail-flinging.
While fans turned out in droves to catch a glimpse of Cruise, 63, still doing his own stunts and sprinting like the fate of the world depends on it, critics weren't quite as thrilled with what they saw.
The Daily Mail's review of the film – headlined 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is 3 hours of nonsense that will make you wish for the world to end' – features failed-marriage levels of resentment for Cruise's self-serious action hero.
Brian Viner writes: 'The film drags terribly in parts, and could lose half an hour just by cutting most of the lines telling us, in about 100 different ways, that the planet stands on the edge of a precipice. By the end, you might be wishing it would just fall off it.'
Directed once again by Christopher McQuarrie, the film promises more globe-trotting espionage and enough explosions to heat a small country – but according to many critics, the concept may have finally run out of steam.
One thing seemingly everyone can agree on is that the first half drags on, with scene after scene in which everyone and their mother congratulates Ethan Hunt for all his world-saving prowess. Many viewed this as a thinly veiled victory lap for Cruise himself, not Hunt.

Vulture's Bilge Ebiri was also exhausted by how much of the film was self-congratulatory, writing: 'It's dispiriting to find so much of this new film suffering from Solemnity Overload, as Final Reckoning's first hour drowns us in dumb, endless litanies about the many achievements and transgressions of Ethan Hunt.'
Returning alongside Cruise are franchise regulars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg,, and Hayley Atwell – with a few new faces thrown into the espionage soup. But even their combined charm doesn't seem to have salvaged this particular mission.
Even Variety's Owen Gleiberman, who was moved enough by Cruise's daring new stunts to mostly ignore the film's failings, reluctantly admitted in his review: 'There are moments when The Final Reckoning is preposterous.'

Despite a budget rumoured to have ballooned past £300million, The Final Reckoning is facing questions about whether the franchise has finally become a victim of its own scale. More Trending
Still, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave the film five stars and called it 'wildly entertaining,' even if he, too, admitted it was slow and bombastic at times.
This sequel follows the cliffhanger ending of Dead Reckoning – which had fans eager for resolution. But for many reviewers, the payoff didn't quite match the promise, though we won't spoil anything here.
Still, never count Ethan Hunt out. Cruise has defied the odds before. Audiences are sure to show up in force when the film hits cinemas worldwide, so Paramount may yet have the last laugh.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hits UK cinemas on May 21, with previews from May 19

Lisa Kudrow says her Friends character Phoebe ‘was so far from who I am'
The 61-year-old from Los Angeles played one of six friends featured in the hit US sitcom which also starred Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc and the late Matthew Perry. Speaking to US actress Parker Posey for Variety's Actors On Actors series, she said: 'It (the series) was fun the whole time, because we had fun, the cast had fun. 'It was like a collaboration with the writers, because they were so great and nice and good. 'But me being Phoebe was so far from who I was as a human being that it was work. 'I needed to justify everything she was saying in my head so that it felt like she meant it and it was real to her. It was a lot of work. 'And I remember like season two or three, and I was just doing it, and went, 'Oh my god, I'm not doing the work. I don't know if this is going as well. I'm not doing the work'. 'I was really fretting over it. And (Matt) LeBlanc went, 'What's the matter with you?'. I said, 'I'm not doing the work that I did. I used to like really work, and he said, 'You're her. You don't have to do it anymore'.' Alongside her role in Friends, Kudrow is known for starring in a number of TV series as well as comedy films Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and The Opposite Of Sex. In 2023 she thanked her late co-star Perry for 'the best 10 years a person gets to have' while filming Friends in a tribute following his death at the age of 54. During their conversation, Posey, who has starred in films including Dazed And Confused and Superman Returns, spoke about one of her more recent roles playing a southern woman called Victoria Ratliff in season three of Mike White's dark comedy, The White Lotus. She said: 'It was such a gift to have this middle-aged woman at this time in my life, in my career, to be the southern woman. 'I was reading Tennessee Williams in junior high and high school and southern writers and all of this. So I was like, I just ate it up.'

Miley Cyrus heckled for ‘scamming' fans at premiere – but supporters hit back
Miley Cyrus' highly anticipated film premiere took a chaotic turn when a furious fan heckled the singer, sparking a storm of viral backlash and online debate. The pop superstar appeared at New York's Beacon Theatre on June 6 for the world premiere of Something Beautiful, a visual album and cinematic companion to her latest record. The hour-long film debuted as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, with Cyrus joined on the red carpet by her creative collaborators and her mother, Tish Cyrus. 'Everybody say 'dysfunctional!'' Miley joked to photographers, posing in a sheer beaded gown as fans gathered to celebrate what was billed as a 'one-of-a-kind pop opera.' However, not everyone in the sold-out audience was clear on what they'd signed up for, so things became even more dysfunctional than Miley had imagined. In a now-viral clip circulating online, a woman in the crowd can be heard yelling: 'We thought this was a concert! We paid $800! Are you actually going to sing?' Handling the moment like a true pro, Miley then launched into an acapella rendition of The Climb. But not everyone was appeased. Other frustrated attendees echoed that sentiment online, claiming they'd been misled into believing the premiere would feature a live performance. 'You scammed us,' wrote TikTok user @catherinegattii. @mitchsipstea added: 'Should've made it more clear prior that it was a film (if you can even call it that). Never felt more scammed paying hundreds for something that was basically a marathon viewing of music videos. Something Beautiful? Something Scammy?' @bhawes99 shared their experience: 'Miley, I flew with 2 daughters from Houston, thinking we would see you perform. This trip is thousands of dollars. This was advertised as a CONCERT. This was a rip off. I want my money back and an apology. FALSE ADVERTISING X100! All the people in the lobby were angry at being scammed.' However, many fans quickly rallied to Miley's defense, blaming the backlash on poor reading comprehension. @TasteOfESV fumed on X: 'This actually pissed me off so bad… how dare you disrespect MILEY CYRUS at her own event bc YOU didn't read what you were buying a ticket for?? She has no obligation to entertain you ungrateful people.' @TheMileyCyrusHQ added: 'The thing is after my experience with the rude fans at Chateau, I would have literally stood up and told her to shut the fuck up. Like I can't take it anymore. Let's normalise Chappell Roaning.' More Trending @MBC0801 posted under a clip of the heckler: 'Explain to me how u thought a film premiere was a concert.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video @xan_jpeg agreed: 'How did they get concert from anything in the promotional materials?' In fairness, the ticketing page did clearly state: 'Fueled by fantasy, Something Beautiful is a one-of-a-kind pop opera featuring thirteen original new songs from the Something Beautiful album. After the Premiere: An exclusive conversation with Miley Cyrus.' Hopefully, after a rocky premiere event, it'll be smooth sailing as the film hits cinemas in the US. Got a story? I thought Robbie Williams was overhyped but can still kick it
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video I don't think I truly understood the hype around Robbie Williams until I saw him live in concert. In one night, I've gone from a non-believer to a full-blown fan after decades of thinking he was just that guy who had a few hits in the 90s. My conversion began with Better Man, which is one of the best biopics made in recent years, but until his London gig, I still saw him as an artist of the past. As if he could tell what I was thinking, Robbie instantly proved me wrong by opening his two-hour set with his brand new song, Rocket. Very few artists could release a track and have the entirety of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium singing along two weeks later — let alone make it their opening number. But that's the power of Robbie. From Rock DJ to Angels, he is (as he so delicately puts it) 's**tting hits'. And they were all packed into his Britpop Tour show. Rocket turned out to be the perfect opener, with the 51-year-old star performing some aerial acrobatics to let us all know he planned to put on a show. This quickly gave way to Let Me Entertain You, a song that set the tone for not only this gig, but his entire career — this is what he was born to do. I had anticipated a good set list — of course, there's going to be hits, it's Robbie Williams after all. However, there was so much more to the show than big songs. Ever the perfect showman, Robbie effortlessly toes the line between his ego and self-deprecating jokes, oozing charisma and charm that make it hard not to like him. Jokes about his age, his wild past, and even some stray barbs at Oasis filled the moments between the songs without dropping the palpable energy in the room. One particularly joyous moment was when he brought opening act Lottery Winners' singer Thom Rylance back on stage for a surprise song set. Here, fans were tested by the comedic duo, singing along to fragments of tracks like Candy before the legendary Lulu joined them for a rendition of Take That's Relight My Fire. Take That wasn't the only 90s band's fire which Robbie relit either, as midway through singing Keep On Movin' he brought out the whole of Five. For the first time in 25 years, Sean Conlon, Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson, Abz Love, and Jason Brown were all on stage together, basking in the screams of the shocked audience. These moments prove Robbie knows exactly who his audience is and exactly what they want: personality and nostalgia. This made it all the more jarring when things didn't quite land, such as when the gig became bogged down in clunky AI-generated filler where the Come Undone hitmaker 'spoke' to his younger and older self. I'm not a fan of generative AI at the best of times, but there's something deeply awkward about watching someone — no matter how charming — 'talk' to a pre-made computer-generated approximation of themselves. While the moments produced a handful of cheap laughs, the inclusion of these cringey videos felt incredibly disjointed from the very personable, real-life Robbie on stage. The AI was thankfully a small misstep, which was quickly moved past in the sheer onslaught of undeniable bangers. She's The One, Kids, Strong, and Feel all sparked dancing and cheering from the audience, most of whom seemed to know every single word. Finally, after an impressive two hours of dancing and singing, the boyband legend finished on Angels — because what else could it be. More Trending It is simply the perfect closing song. Even among his many (many) hits, Angels remains untouchable. Ultimately, you're never going to get a bad show with Robbie. He's a born performer, despite what they thought of his solo potential in the 90s. After 35 years in the spotlight and 22 since his iconic Knebworth shows, the living legend that is Robbie Williams very much proved he can still kick it. Got a story?
