Callum Kerr of Netflix's 'Virgin River' releases statement on parents' death
Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Scottish actor Callum Kerr issued a statement Sunday following the death of his mother and stepfather in France.
The bodies of Kerr's stepfather, retired fraud investigator Andrew Searle and Kerr's mother Dawn were discovered Thursday at their home in southwest France, Deadline reported.
"At this time, Callum Kerr, Amanda Kerr, Tom Searle & Ella Searle are grieving the tragic loss of their mother and father, Dawn and Andrew Searle. No family member is available for media interviews or comments," Kerr posted on social media.
"We kindly request that their privacy be respected during this difficult period. We will provide updates as appropriate."
Dawn Searle's body was found outside the couple's property, surrounded by jewelry, The Guardian reported. Emergency responders later discovered Andrew Searle's corpse.
Callum Kerr is best known for his role as George Kiss on BBC Channel 4 program Hollyoaks in 2020 and 2021 and also had recurring roles in the Fox program Monarch. Most recently, he starred in the Netflix series Virgin River. He also released a number of country music songs.
BBC News reported that the public prosecutor said: "Both died violent deaths, but I cannot establish that either was a homicide. All hypotheses remain open." Autopsies on Searle and Kerr are scheduled to begin Monday.

Despite the hiccup in his travel plans, the actor understood the TSA agent was just doing his job. 'But, you know what? I give that guy a thumbs up because he was paying attention,' he said. Del Toro and Meyers then imagined how the conversation would have gone if the TSA let him go and something bad happened. 'It was a checklist!' the actor joked. Marking Anderson's 13th feature, The Phoenician Scheme is now in theaters, starring del Toro as wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda, who becomes the target of a deadly pursuit after appointing his nun daughter, Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton), as the sole heir to his estate. Moscow temporarily closes airports as Ukraine targets Russia with drones
June 8 (UPI) -- Ukraine targeted Russia with another drone strike on Sunday, causing two airports serving Moscow and a third nearby to temporarily close. Russia's Federal Agency for Air Transport said in a statement that restrictions had been put in place and later lifted at Moscow's Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, as well as at the Kaluga airport about a hundred miles southwest of the capital. "The restrictions were introduced to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights," the agency said. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that Russia had shot down multiple drones that had flown towards the city overnight. "Emergency services specialists are working at the site of the falling debris," Sobyanin said. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram that it intercepted and destroyed 61 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow region and the regions of Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Tula, Orel, Kursk, and Crimea. It later said another three were destroyed over the Belgorod, Bryansk and Tula regions. The strikes came after Tula regional governor Dmitry Milyaev said on Telegram on Saturday that a drone crashed into the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk and caused a fire, which was later put out. He said two people had been injured. Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council's Counter-Disinformation Center, said on Telegram that the Azot plant "is one of the key links in the Russian military-industrial complex." "It is here that explosives are manufactured, including TNT, which is used in artillery shells, aircraft bombs and missiles," Kovalenko alleged. "After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the enterprise was put on wartime mode. Azot works closely with companies that manufacture shells, UAV hulls, and remote mining equipment." Meanwhile, Russia praised the efforts of its own drone strikes Sunday, saying on Telegram that it had used drones to strike a MaxxPro armored vehicle operated by "Ukrainian militants" in the South Donetsk direction as well as to destroy an ammunition depot and in the Zaporizhia region. On Saturday, Russia conducted a large-scale attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing multiple people as the death toll continued to grow, according to Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov. The latest escalations in the war come amid a stalled prisoner exchange deal. Both sides have blamed each other for delays in reaching a deal.

Marines could be sent to L.A. protests, Hegseth says
June 8 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department arrested one person overnight in Paramount, a city in Los Angeles County, amid ongoing protests against raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, officials said Sunday. The sheriff's department confirmed the arrest by email to UPI but did not provide any further details about the arrest. More protests have been planned in Los Angeles ahead of the arrival of National Guardsmen called up by President Donald Trump to curb the demonstrations, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said he might send in U.S. Marines if necessary to aid them. "The National Guard, and Marines if need be, stand with ICE," Hegseth said. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to UPI late Saturday that the administration has "a zero tolerance for criminal behavior and violence," especially violence allegedly targeted at law enforcement. Protesters clashed with police in riot gear in Los Angeles on Saturday as outrage mounted over a series of ICE raids carried out last week across southern California. Trump then ordered 2,000 members of the National Guard to Los Angeles, later thanking them Saturday night for their "good job" in handling the protests. "Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest," Trump said on his Truth Social platform. "These radical left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will not be tolerated." Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said afterward on social media that no National Guardsmen had yet arrived. "Just to be clear, the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles," she said. Trump, who pardoned mask-wearing demonstrators who rioted at the U.S. Capitol in 2021, also said protesters would not be allowed to wear masks. Demonstrators have criticized ICE officers for also wearing masks while conducting raids. Federal law does not explicitly forbid them from wearing masks but they are required by law to clearly identify themselves with badges or patches and to state their identity in an arrest. "Masks will not be allowed to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why?" Trump said of the protesters. "Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!" The streets were quiet in Los Angeles around 7 a.m. local time, The New York Times reported. Meanwhile, the Northern California Coalition for Just Immigration Reform said Saturday that it would be organizing a protest rally outside the California State Capitol on Monday. "The Trump administration's baseless deployment of the National Guard is plainly retaliation against California, a stronghold for immigrant communities, and is akin to a declaration of war on all Californians," the ACLU's division in southern California said in a statement. "The only threat to safety today is the masked goon squads that the Trump administration has deployed to terrorize the communities of Los Angeles County," the organization said.
