Next hikes outlook after sales boosted by weather and M&S woes

Leader Live2 days ago
The womenswear and homewares chain posted a 10.5% rise in full-price sales for the second quarter to July 26, with growth of 10.9% for the half-year as a whole.
In the UK, sales jumped by 7.8% in the second quarter as the group said it was boosted by 'better than expected weather and trading disruption at a major competitor'.
M&S had to suspend online trading for nearly two months from mid-April after it was hit by a major hack.
Next said the recent performance and forecasts for better-than-forecast second half trading means it now expects full-year sales to rise by 7.5% and for profits to increase by 9.3% to £1.11 billion.
It had previously pencilled in sales growth of 6% and for profits to lift by 6.8%.
The upgrade marks the group's third in just five months.
But Next said it 'remains cautious for the second half', stressing that the improved outlook is for its international arm over the next six months.
It said: 'In the UK, we believe we exceeded expectations in the second quarter as a result of better summer weather and trading disruption at a major competitor.
'We do not expect either of these factors to have a material effect in the second half, and so we are not increasing our guidance for UK sales in the second half.'
It believes sales growth in the UK will slow sharply to 1.9% as the jobs market starts to falter following the Government's move to hike National Insurance contributions for employers, at the same time as rising the minimum wage.
Next said: 'We expect UK employment opportunities to continue to diminish as we enter the second half, with the effects of April's National Insurance changes continuing to filter through into the economy as the year progresses.
'We believe that this will increasingly dampen consumer spending as the year progresses.'
But an online marketing push for its international arm is bearing fruit, helping drive sales 28.1% higher in the first half and with growth of 19.4% now expected in the final six months.
The results come after Next announced late on Wednesday that it had bought Seraphine – the maternity fashion firm, whose clothes were worn by the Princess of Wales during her pregnancies – after it recently collapsed into administration.
Next paid £600,000 for the brand and announced it was bringing back Seraphine's founder Cecile Reinaud as an adviser to help relaunch the fashion label.

Dunelm bedding that feels 'really expensive' and comes in 3 colours gets 30% cut

'This is amazing bedding. Utterly soft and warm. I sleep so well under these cosy duvet covers.' Dunelm is currently hosting a mid-summer sale, which is seeing thousands of products get discounts up to 50 per cent. From curtains and rugs to garden chairs and storage spaces, shoppers will be able to get their hands on a cheeky homeware bargain across a range of products. For those wanting to switch up the aesthetic in their bedroom or bring the finishing touches to a guest room, you can never go wrong with a new set of bedding. With designs ranging from silky and simplistic to brightly coloured and delicately detailed, there is a wide selection of bedding choices included in Dunelm's sale. One stunning set that many shoppers say 'looks more expensive than it is', is the Edie Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set. Normally retailing for between £30 and £45, shoppers can now get their hands on this luxury set for 30 per cent off, with prices starting at £21. Said to provide the 'perfect harmony of comfort and exotic design', this Edie Duvet set is crafted with soft polyester to provide a luxurious feel that will enable a rejuvenating night's sleep. Featuring an eye-catching quilted Moroccan design, this bedding will add sophistication and intrigue to your bedroom. Available in olive, natural or clay to best match the room's aesthetic, this duvet comes with matching pillowcases to create a seamlessly coordinated and stylish look. However, Dunelm states that this bedding isn't just about boasting a 'trendy design', as it also comes with a secure button closure to ensure a snug fit for an uninterrupted sleep. In terms of sizes, shoppers can currently buy a single set for £21 (RRP £30) or a double for £24.50 (RRP £35). The king sized set has also been reduced down from £40 to £28, while the super king set is now retailing for £31.50 in the sale (RRP £45). For those looking for something a bit more simplistic in its design, Dunelm has also reduced the price of the green edition of the Kersey Embroidery Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set. With prices now starting at £15.40 instead of £22 for a single, this bedding set features a crisp white duvet with a charming leaf embroidery. Alternatively, M&S is selling their Cotton Blend Striped Bedding Set in a double for £20. Currently available in pink or neutral colourway, this bedding provides a clean and modern look with its bold pinstripes design. With StayNew technology, this set should still look and feel fresh wash after wash. Back to the Edie Duvet Set, it currently has a 4.4 star rating from Dunelm shoppers, with many reviewers praising the set for its 'luxurious' feel and 'premium' quality. One delighted shopper said: "Absolutely in love with this bedding in green! It feels so luxurious and looks way more expensive than it was. The quilting isn't too much so doesn't get too hot underneath and has a slight weight to it which feels so good when you're sleeping. Definitely recommend." With another customer commenting: "If there was a 4.5 score then this is what I would give this duvet cover and pillowcases. It feels really expensive with the quilted design and soft material. However, they did go on to add: "The downside is that the Super King Size cover is far too big for a super king size duvet. I have had to shorten the cover by sewing the top edge by about 15cm. But other than this it's lovely." Another shopper also grumbled: "This duvet cover is huge, very oversized, a proper workout when it comes to putting the duvet in. The underside fabric is not cotton which prevents it from getting a nice tidy finish." Despite this, a five-star reviewer praised: "This is amazing bedding. Utterly soft and warm. I sleep so well under these cosy duvet covers." While a fifth shopper added: "The bedding set is lovely, very soft and smooth, almost silky to the touch, easy to put the duvet inside also, very premium product for the price." Canada manufacturing PMI shows activity declining for sixth straight month in July

TORONTO, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Canada's manufacturing sector contracted for a sixth straight month in July as tariffs undercut trade with the United States and spurred firms to reduce inventory as well as staffing levels, data on Friday showed. The S&P Global Canada Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) edged up to 46.1 in July from 45.6 in June but remained well below the 50 no-change threshold. A level below 50 indicates contraction in the sector. The PMI has posted sub-50 readings since February. 'Canada's manufacturing sector continued to struggle in the face of tariffs during July, with output, new orders and buying activity all declining at noticeable rates – albeit to lesser degrees than seen in recent months," Paul Smith, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement. "Unsurprisingly, it was again trade with the United States that remained especially challenging, with firms noting reduced demand and sales volumes from US-based clients." The new orders index rose to 44.2 from 43.5 in June, while the measure of new export orders was at 41.9, up from 40.2. The U.S. is set to increase tariffs on Canadian goods not covered by a continental trade pact to 35% if the two countries do not reach a trade agreement by August 1. Canada sends about 75% of its exports to the United States. "For companies facing a hugely unpredictable business environment, it has become increasingly important to run operations as lean as possible," Smith said. "And such considerations inevitably led to further cuts to both employment and purchasing activity.' The stocks of purchases index fell to 44.1 from 44.6 in June, posting its lowest level since May 2020, as firms sought to run down their inventory levels, while the employment index was at 46.2, down from 46.7. One silver lining was reduced input cost inflation. The input price index fell to its lowest since November, at 57.0 from 61.4 in June.

‘Timeless' furniture, carpet & sofa brand to shut down in UK after 120 years as it launches ‘everything must go' sale

Massive discounts have been slapped on all stock DOORS CLOSING 'Timeless' furniture, carpet & sofa brand to shut down in UK after 120 years as it launches 'everything must go' sale Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT'S the final curtain call for a family-run furniture store that has been in business for 120 years. To mark the end of an era, Sturtons & Tappers has launched a huge 'everything must go' sale. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Loyal customers flocked to the store to find a bargain in the closing sale Credit: Sturtons & Tappers The renowned retailer is famous in Bournemouth for its timeless sofas, bespoke furniture, luxurious carpets, dining sets, lighting, and home accessories. For generations, Sturtons & Tappers has proudly furnished thousands of homes across the region – and now, it's all got to go! Director David, who has helped steer the shop's legacy, said it's a 'bittersweet moment'. "We've had the privilege of furnishing thousands of homes across generations, and while we're excited for the next chapter, we're incredibly grateful to all our loyal customers. "This sale is our way of saying thank you." He and Pauline Scott, as well as other colleagues, are looking forward to step into a "well-earned" retirement. With 'unprecedented discounts' now slashed across every inch of the store, a spokesperson warned: 'This is the public's last chance to snap up premium home furnishings at never-to-be-repeated prices.' In April 2025, independent retailers were delivered a fierce blow after employer National Insurance surged to 15 percent. The National Living Wage also rose to £12.21 an hour and business-rates relief dropped from 75 percent to 40 percent. Huge high street retailer makes Irish return with first shop opening five years after devastating eight store closure For millions of small businesses across the country, the changes were crippling. A massive drop in footfall on high streets has also taken a toll on shops across the UK. Around 26 percent of all shopping now takes place online, up sharply from pre-pandemic levels. To make things worse, bans on free parking and more expensive town centre fees are doing no favours to local shops. Rents, energy bills and card processing fees are another hurdle, with some paying 3 to 5 percent on card fees alone. In 2024, around 13,470 stores closed - a sharp 28 percent jump from 2023. A staggering 84 percent of those were independently run shops. It's not just smaller shops that are struggling. From well-known budget favourites like Poundland to popular fashion brands such as New Look and Monki, a raft of familiar names are set to disappear. The cost of running shops, from soaring energy bills to higher National Insurance, is pushing retailers to cut back. At the same time, more shoppers are going online, and with the cost-of-living crisis biting, people have less cash to spend. The result? Shops are closing, and high streets are starting to suffer. If you want to know which stores are shutting soon, we've got the full list right here. Apple Apple will close its two-floor Bristol city centre store in Cabot Circus on August 9, 2025 after 15 years. The closure comes as part of a redevelopment plan for Cabot Circus, which will replace the store with new flexible workspaces and public areas. GAME GAME is closing several UK stores this summer as part of a wider restructuring by parent company Frasers Group. Upcoming closures include Festival Place in Basingstoke on August 10, Southend High Street later in August, and Chatham in September. The Nottingham Victoria Centre store closed in July. Stores are running 20% off clearance sales ahead of closure. Hobbycraft As part of a major restructuring, arts and crafts retailer Hobbycraft will close three stores in early August 2025. The affected locations are Bromborough, Southport, and Stratford Upon Avon. The closures follow a strategic review aimed at reshaping the business. Monki Monki, owned by H&M, is closing its Glasgow store in Buchanan Galleries in August. The retailer has already shuttered branches in Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield, and London earlier this year. The online store has also closed, with the brand being integrated into H&M's Weekday line. One remaining Monki store in Bristol remains open but will either close later this year or be transformed into a new concept. New Look New Look is continuing its wave of store closures, with a branch in Neath, Wales, set to close imminently on August 6, 2025. This follows a string of 11 closures already this year, including sites in Hamilton, Birmingham, Corby, Devizes, and others across England, Scotland, and Wales. The high street stalwart has warned that nearly 100 of its 364 UK stores could be at risk when leases expire, amid ongoing cost pressures such as the National Insurance hikes earlier this year. The retailer recently secured £30million in fresh equity investment to bolster its online operations and completed a £100million refinancing deal in 2023. Last year, New Look reported sales of £769million. Poundland Poundland is closing 26 stores in August 2025 as part of a wider restructuring plan following its £1 sale to Gordon Brothers earlier this year. Closing August 1: Newquay Closing 10 August: Ammanford Birmingham Fort Cardiff Valegate Cramlington Leicester Long Eaton Port Glasgow Seaham Shrewsbury Tunbridge Wells Closing August 17: Bedford Bidston Moss Broxburn Craigavon Dartmouth East Dulwich Falmouth Hull St Andrews Newtonabbey Perth Poole Sunderland Stafford Thornaby Worcester In addition, the Whiteley store in Fareham closed unexpectedly on July 21 2025, outside the announced closures. Whitby will close on September 3. Poundland is trimming its estate from nearly 800 stores to between 650 and 700 locations. The company is removing frozen foods, ending online sales, and expanding womenswear and seasonal lines. Managing director Barry Williams called the closures regrettable but necessary to secure thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.
