DRAMA RETURNS Karen Pirie cast: Who appears in the ITV show?
LAUREN Lyle is back for a second series of the Scottish murder-mystery whodunnit Karen Pirie.
The gritty cop drama is produced by Line of Duty bosses and follows Detective Inspector Karen Pirie, freshly promoted after the events of series one.
What is Karen Pirie about?
Based on crime writer Val McDermid's novels, the new series is adapted from the Scottish novelist's 2008 page-turner, A Darker Domain.
The first was based on Val's novel The Distant Echo.
Teenager Rosie Duff was found brutally murdered in the Scottish university town of St Andrews in 1996 and three drunken students were the prime suspects.
In the second season, Karen is put in charge of an infamous cold case from the 80s that has gained fresh scrutiny from senior police, the media, and the victim's relatives.
In 1984, Catriona Grant, the daughter of a wealthy local oil tycoon, was abducted, along with her infant son.
The ransom notes that followed stirred up a huge press storm, but the culprits were never traced and neither Catriona nor her son were seen again.
But when, in the present day, a body is found with an undeniable link to the historic crime, Karen and her team must discover the truth under intense personal and professional pressure.
Here's a look at the case who will be looking at uncovering the truth in the second series of Karen Pirie.

Lauren Lyle as Karen Pirie
Outlander star Lauren Lyle again takes on the role of DC Karen Pirie.
Lauren spent a great deal of time discovering her character with the best-selling author of the book, Val and with a detective she met.
In the books, Karen is unfashionable and odd, and doesn't really mind what she looks like because her main focus is her job.
That is why Lauren worked closely with costume designer Lesley Abernethy to make her look humble but cool at the same time.
To get into character, she also explained how she got to understand the plot and the case like a detective.
She said: "I read the scripts hundreds of times.
"Like a detective, I got huge pieces of paper that I taped together and put on my wall, with details of the whole case.
'It's so complicated that I had to make sure I understood it, so I kept referencing back to this map on my wall.
"There are so many suspects and I had to walk into each scene remembering if Karen really did suspect them or if she secretly trusted them.'
Lauren appeared in Broken, alongside Sean Bean, in 2017, and played Jade Antoniak in Vigil.
She has played Marshall in Outlander since 2017.
Chris Jenks as DC Jason Murray

The Sex Education star is back again.
Portraying DC Jason Murray, Chris explained how his character brings humour to the show and how his relationship with Karen evolves through the episodes.
He said: "Jason is really well-intentioned and good-natured, but just doesn't quite get things right a lot of the time.
"He's desperately trying to hit the mark, but he just misses it.
"He's maybe not the brightest detective on the team, but he kind of makes up for it in his hard work and through his relationship with Karen - they develop into a really good team and she helps him find his stride.
"That relationship builds through the series - at first, they don't really see eye to eye and she's quite frustrated that she's been given such a potentially useless member of the team!
"But he really shows his qualities as they move on and eventually he comes into his own, and really stands up for himself in the later episodes."
Chris explained Jason to be a sort of mummy's boy who loves working out in the gym and enjoys doing basic things in life too such as going out and dating.
Zach Wyatt as DS Phil Parhatka

Zach Wyatt is known for his roles in The Witcher: Blood Origin, Blithe Spirit and Urban Myths.
Now he takes on the role of detective Phil Parhatka, who was supposed to be promoted, but Karen took the position instead.
Zach said: "He's a very diligent, driven detective - this job is all he has ever wanted to do and he's consumed by his work, he takes it very seriously but at a healthy level."

I'm A Celebrity star has 'a lifetime of medication' ahead as he shares tumour update

Singer and former I'm A Celebrity star Russell Watson has shared an update on his health in a candid Good Morning Britain chat after undergoing surgery for two brain tumours I'm A Me Out of Here! alumni Russell Watson has shared a health update after battling two brain tumours. The singer, who competed on the 2020 series of I'm A Celeb, appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today to chat about his honorary doctorate from the University of Greater Manchester. ‌ The star was given the degree at a ceremony for students from the School of Health, Science and Society, during which he shared how his health battles had "graphically highlighted" to him the "amazing job done by staff in our NHS". Russell, 58, was diagnosed with his first brain tumour in 2005 after experiencing headaches and underwent brain surgery for a benign brain tumour. ‌ ‌ A second brain tumour was found in 2007 after an MRI scan showed it had regrown and caused bleeding into his brain. The singer required emergency surgery and underwent extensive radiotherapy afterwards. When asked by presenter Charlotte Hawkins about his health on today's programme, Russell said: "It's good. It's very good. I feel good, I feel strong." He added: "I'll be on a lifetime of medication - that's one of the by products of what happened to me. But I'm just happy to be here. I have a wonderful life, I'm very very lucky. I've been 25 years in the industry. Having lasted this long is a great thing." ‌ Earlier this year, Russell shared the chilling words he received from doctors shortly after being diagnosed with his second brain tumour. He told The Guardian: "After surgery, I was told that, even healthy and fit, I would no longer perform like my younger self – something that I refused to accept. "I may not be the wagging-tailed puppy-dog any more, but my voice is in the best shape it's been in, and I think I look in pretty good shape as well. My life has been this cacophony of incredible highs and disastrous lows, but it's made me the person I am today." According to the NHS, those suffering with a brain tumour can have a number of different symptoms depending on where in the brain the tumour is found. Common symptoms include headaches, seizures, persistently feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting) and drowsiness.

Emmerdale celebrates Lionesses' triumphant Euros victory with surprise episode shake-up - amid claims soap will be hit by 'huge cast cull'

Monday's episode of Emmerdale kicks off with a riotous pub celebration for the Lionesses' victory over Spain - in a last-minute addition from producers. Even the ITV bosses behind the beloved soap cannot hide their pride for England's women's national football team, who emerged as the triumphant winners in Sunday's UEFA Euro finals. The opening of the episode, which is already available on ITVX, will see Bob Hope, played by Tony Audenshaw, chatting with Mary Goskirk, played by Louise Jameson, about last night's incredible match. Viewers will also get a glimpse of a lively celebration at the Woolpack pub, with villagers having piled excitedly in to watch the Lionesses make history. The scene was a last-minute addition, filmed with the hopeful anticipation of an England win. And it allowed Emmerdale to capture the national excitement surrounding the Lionesses' triumph. 'With the nation getting behind the Lionesses, we knew the fictional characters in Emmerdale would've been doing just the same,' said producer Laura Shaw. 'So, it felt right and proper that we should reflect this result on the show.' The move follows news that ITV bosses are thought to be planning a dramatic shake-up of their flagship soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale, with proposals to 'cut one in ten cast members' as part of sweeping cost-cutting measures. The broadcaster has announced plans to slash £15million from its budget, after revealing profits have plunged by 44 per cent to £99million for the first half of the year. Now, both soaps are reportedly being targeted in a bid to bring spiralling production costs under control. It has been reported that around 10 per cent of the current cast lists - which include 84 regulars on Corrie and 70 on Emmerdale - are expected to be dropped. Scripts and episode structures are also under review, with producers being told to reduce the number of scenes per episode and tighten shooting schedules. A source told The Sun: 'It's brutal. We've known it was on the cards for a while, but they're really cranking it up now and it's across the soaps. 'They're looking to save millions and Corrie and Emmerdale are the obvious places. They're very expensive shows.' Most actors are contracted per episode and guaranteed a set number annually - a system which is thought to have become unsustainable. Some long-serving cast members are reportedly concerned about their job security, particularly those who rely on a steady income from the soaps. The source added: 'Many who have been there for a long time are reliant on their income staying as it is. 'The amount of cast has spiralled out of control and focusing on dialogue, not action, could also save money.' The proposed cuts come as ITV undergoes a wider restructuring across its daytime programming, with major job losses already hitting shows including Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women. MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment. In a series of changes, the broadcast channel has already started undergoing changes to its daytime format. As previously reported by MailOnline, the fourth series of The 1% Club, which is normally shown on Saturday nights, ended in May - but will now be back in Autumn, in a brand new form. Instead of airing just one night per week, ITV announced the programme will be transformed to create a five-day special event renamed The 1% Club Rollover. The basic gameplay will remain the same - but if the prize pot is not won on one episode, it will roll over to the next. Also in May, ITV announced there would be dramatic changes to Lorraine Kelly's show slashed from an hour to 30 minutes and, like Loose Women, will only air 30 weeks of the year. The new regime, set to come into effect in January, will cost a potential 300 staff members their jobs as a consultation period begins, thought to last until September, before employees are finally let go in December. A source told The Sun: 'The tension is unbearable. There's a lot of rage towards This Morning, which everyone feels is constantly favoured despite it being the lame duck of the daytime flock. 'There's a feeling that Loose Women and Lorraine are delivering resilient, solid ratings while This Morning is always in the Press for its tumbling viewing figures. Loose Women is even winning awards.'
