
Flagship estate returns as BMW South Africa prices M5 Touring
Its entry into the South African market extensively rumoured since the arrival of the M3 Touring last year, BMW South Africa has now officially detailed the returning M5 Touring as its second performance estate.
The first station wagon M5 since the V10-powered E65 made onto local soil in limited numbers 15 years ago, the newcomer joins the sedan in equal role as the first ever hybrid M5.
Tipping the scales at a reported 63 kg heavier than the sedan, the Touring carries over the combination of the 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 and an 18.6-kWh battery pack that powers a single 145kW/280Nm electric motor housed within the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox.
Producing a combined 535kW/1 000Nm, the M5 Touring will get from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and hit a limited top speed of 305 km/h as per the otherwise optional M Driver's Package being fitted as standard.
Aside from the 70 km all-electric range, the M5 Touring also gets the same M Boost system as the sedan, which unlocks the full 535kW/1 000Nm in one burst for 10 seconds.
In addition, the boost setting also incorporates a pre-gearing setting in which the total output of the battery increases to 450 Nm.
For South Africa, the M5 Touring comes equipped as standard with the 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear M-light alloy wheels, the glass panoramic roof and sun blinds, the M Carbon mirror caps, M Sport exhaust system and the M Sport seats.
Carried over from the comparative European model is the Adaptive M suspension, the Active M differential, M Active Steering and the rear axle steering system.
Able to have the xDrive all-wheel-drive system switched from 4WD to 4WD Sport and then to 2WD, the Touring further keeps hold of the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the 14.9-inch infotainment system that makes-up with the Curved Display, the new M steering wheel, the augmented reality Head-Up Display and quad-zone climate control.
Confirmed options are the M carbon ceramic brakes with black brake calipers, and a trailer tow hitch.
Compared to the sedan, the Touring's biggest difference is more utility space as boot now accommodates 500-litres versus 466-litres. With the 40/20/40 split rear back folded down though, space increases to 1 630-litres.
Colours and price
Locally, the M5 Touring will have a choice of six leather upholstery options, carbon fibre or dark oak interior trim, and four colours; Storm Bay, Marina Bay Blue, Isle of Man Green and Frozen Deep Grey.
As with the sedan, the M5 Touring's sticker price includes a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan plus an eight-year/100 000 km battery warranty.

Unlike Europe, South Africans aren't big on station wagons or estates as they're called, but give us a fire-breathing performance version and we can't get enough of them. Pricing BMW has priced it R30 000 above its M5 sedan sibling at R2,795,000. Currently, the M3 Touring costs R2,218,506. Fortunately, the BMW M5 Touring is not a limited model for our market. Image: Supplied Power It uses the same M Hybrid oily bits as the M5 sedan, with a twin turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 430kW and 750Nm and an electric motor with 145kW and 280Nm, with a pre-gearing stage that allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450Nm, so the net result is you get 535kW and 1 000Nm. BMW says the electric system provides an all-electric range up to 70 kilometres (WLTP). It has a 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h, although standard in South Africa with the M Driver's Package, it will get to a rather brisk 305km/h. Performance bits Other performance highlights include M Drive Professional, which features Boost Control, M Laptimer and Track View, and the M sport exhaust system. The Touring derivative rolls on M5-specific front 20-inch and rear 21-inch rims and tyres. Thanks to its estate design, boot space is rated at 500 litres and with the seats folded down, 1,630 litres. Ten exterior colours, including the M5 range's exclusive Isle of Man Green and Marina Bay Blue, and Storm Bay and Frozen Deep Grey from the BMW Individual palette, are offered. The cabin receives six upholstery possibilities and the option of either M Carbon Fibre or BMW Individual Fineline Dark Oak interior trims. The R2,795,000 price tag includes a two-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, an eight-year/100,000km battery pack warranty and a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan.

Meta deletes 6.8M WhatsApp accounts in scam crackdown
On 5 August 2025, Meta confirmed that WhatsApp had deleted 6.8 million accounts linked to global scams. Meta reported that fraud networks operating from Southeast Asia's scam centres controlled the accounts and used forced labour in these scams, particularly in Cambodia and Myanmar. Meta removed most accounts before scammers could launch full-scale fraud campaigns. It increasingly uses proactive detection technologies to identify and eliminate scam accounts, often before users report them. Clair Deevy, WhatsApp's Director of External Affairs, affirmed the company's commitment to user safety and highlighted its investments in technology and partnerships to combat scams. Meta described the takedown of 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts as one of its largest anti-scam enforcement actions in 2025. Meta stated the campaign disrupted several networks before scams reached vulnerable users. Scammers often hijack verified accounts to create fake investment or trading groups. These scams typically start with casual messages and shift into private group chats. Scammers commonly exploit financial stress through pyramid schemes and fake crypto investments. Furthermore, Meta said scammers often request upfront fees for false investment returns or rewards. One group in Cambodia used ChatGPT to write step-by-step scam instructions for victims. Meta has employed advanced AI technologies, including those developed with input from AI research organisations, to help detect and dismantle pyramid schemes, such as fraudulent rent-a-scooter investment scams in Southeast Asia. Users were duped into 'investing' in digital scooters for fake passive income returns. Before investors received any earnings, the scammers disappeared with the money. Law enforcement also recommended that users always enable WhatsApp's two-step verification. Meta emphasised the importance of users regularly updating account security features. WhatsApp introduced new privacy features that block scam-related group invitations and alert users before unknown or non-contact numbers add them to groups. Messages from unfamiliar groups remain muted until users choose to interact directly. WhatsApp is testing warning prompts when users message unfamiliar or unsaved contacts, providing safety context before interaction. The app now shows sender context to help users judge message safety more easily. Meta said the new safety tools empower users to make informed communication decisions. These features help reduce users' exposure to scams across the entire platform. WhatsApp's updates aim to protect its global users from scams. The company said it will continue improving safety measures as scam tactics evolve and encourages users to promptly report suspicious messages using the in-app tools. According to Meltwater, WhatsApp reaches 93.9% of South Africa's online population. Authorities have recently uncovered scams that impersonate Old Mutual. South African police have urged citizens to report scam messages without hesitation. Furthermore, Meta said scammers often focus on regions where WhatsApp usage is high and growing. Fraud syndicates use local languages and themes to increase message credibility and success. Meta is actively monitoring fraud centres that target Africa's fast-growing digital markets. From bin to bitcoin fame: the R21 billion blunder that made one man a digital legend

Howells, 39, an IT worker from Newport, Wales, made one of the most expensive mistakes in digital history when he accidentally threw out a desktop hard drive in 2013 containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoins, "TechTimes" reports. At the time, Bitcoin was only taking off - but today, Howells' haul is worth around $950 million! In South African rands, that is almost R17 billion! And going by current projections, his lost fortune could exceed a value $8 billion by 2030 - enough to make anyone howl and weep in despair. But not Howells, he launched a decade-long modern-day digital treasure hunt for the keys to his wealth, which ended up in the local landfill. The publication reports that Howells has finally thrown in the towel after his detailed recovery and funding plans to excavate the landfill site were turned down by the local authority because of environmental and legal restrictions. But this was thwarted by the local authority on the basis that its policy was clear: what you throw away no longer belongs to you; it belongs to the state. "TechTimes" reported that Howells has now officially given up hope of ever retrieving what could have become his generational wealth. And, of course, netizens had a lot to say about his cryptocurrency catastrophe. Chuks Michael Abel was all for the search to continue: "I wouldn't end that search till death do us part." Achille Manzo went a step further, posting on Facebook: "If I was an employee there, I would collect every hard drive I find. Fill one box at a time and sell it sealed to him. As time goes by, you never know, he might find it. At least he knows he has someone on the inside looking for him." And, as usual, there were the jokers, with Keyton Davis posting: "Fun fact - He didn't throw it away, his wife thought he spent too much time on bitcoin and threw it away." Ion Mardari had another theory: "He probably found it and said he gave up, so nobody bothers him."
