Trimbakeshwar temple darshan pass scam busted; 5 arrested
Given the large number of devotees visiting Trimbakeshwar, the temple administration offers two types of darshan passes: a free pass and a paid pass, priced at ₹200 per person. Devotees can purchase the paid passes both offline and online. In recent months, however, there have been growing concerns about malpractices in the online pass booking system. Acting on senior officials' instructions, the police arrested the five individuals on Thursday and dismantled the online pass scam. Investigations revealed that the accused had been booking ₹200 donation-based darshan passes through the official Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust website using fake names, Aadhaar numbers, and mobile numbers. These passes were then resold at inflated prices, ranging from ₹800 to ₹1,000 each, near the temple.
Mahesh Kulkarni, PI at Trimbakeshwar police station, said, 'Our investigation revealed that the five-member gang exploited the online quota, generating 200 to 300 passes per day using fraudulent credentials. Following this incident, the temple administration has implemented changes to the online darshan ticket booking system, including the introduction of Aadhaar linkage to prevent further malpractices.'
A police officer involved in the investigation mentioned that the gang operated via a WhatsApp group, using code names and regularly updating each other on the number of tickets booked and sold.
Trimbakeshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India, attracts a massive influx of devotees during Shravan. On average, about 25,000 pilgrims visit the temple daily during this period. Of these, approximately 5,000 opt for the special donation-based darshan. The temple trust issues 3,000 passes at the temple's north gate and 2,000 through its online portal.
The black-marketing racket was uncovered following complaints from devotees and temple crowd management observations. After conducting surveillance and verifying the complaints, police apprehended the accused and seized digital evidence related to the scam.
Authorities from the temple trust have confirmed they are reviewing the current online booking system and will soon introduce stricter verification measures to prevent further misuse.
Police have urged devotees to use only the official booking platform and to report any suspicious activity related to pass sales.

On July 24, there was a complaint that seven workers of Raninagar under Harishchandrapur police station were detained by Gurgaon police. They were identified as Ajmal Hossain, Usman Ali, Lokman Ali, Manirul Islam, Sadikul Haque, Prakash Das and Abhijit Das, who were working as sweepers in Gurgaon. On receiving the information, communication was established with the SHO of the Gurgaon police station concerned, both via telephone and email. Gurgaon police sent a formal verification request regarding the identity and nationality of the detained individuals. Subsequently, a thorough verification was conducted, and a detailed report with supporting testimonials was forwarded to the Faridabad commissioner of police, through the office of the Malda SP. Following discussions throughout the day, all seven were released on Sunday evening.

HC upholds DU prof's removal after findings in assault case
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has upheld the removal of a Delhi University professor who challenged the adverse findings of an internal complaints committee (ICC) that found multiple allegations of sexual harassment against him. The ICC had also highlighted that virtual interactions between a teacher and students on messaging apps or social media sites fall within the definition of "workplace" under the POSH Act, 2013. "Teachers shape the careers of young aspiring students for a better future. The act of sexual harassment by these very teachers, who are considered as our guides and mentors, against young female students who have just attained majority, has a deleterious effect on the psyche of such students," Justice Subramanium Prasad noted in a recent order, dismissing the plea of Dr Amit Kumar, challenging his compulsory retirement by DU. HC notice to Hry, Karnal police on plea against police inaction in loan app sextortion case
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to the Haryana govt and the Karnal police on a petition filed by a Karnal woman alleging victimisation by cyber sextortion and subsequent police misconduct in a case linked to a fraudulent loan application. The petitioner sought the quashing of a police challan dated Aug 4, 2023, which, she alleges, falsely concludes the case as "untraced" despite substantial evidence and prior involvement of the accused with the police. The woman's ordeal began in 2021 when she responded to an Instagram advertisement for instant loans. After downloading a mobile loan application from the Google Play Store, the app accessed her contact list and required personal identification, including her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and a photograph, according to the woman. Although she initially received and repaid a small loan, she soon became a victim of blackmail. The accused allegedly morphed her uploaded photograph to create obscene images and threatened to circulate them among her contacts unless she paid large sums of money. Out of fear and humiliation, Poonam reportedly paid between Rs 25–30 lakh to the fraudsters between May 2021 and Feb 2022. Following this, the couple lodged a complaint at the cyber crime police station in Karnal, leading to an FIR on Sept 27, 2022, under various sections of the Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code. The petition alleges that the police failed to act effectively. Instead of arresting the accused, the police allegedly brokered a settlement between the parties and even took Rs 5 lakh from the money the accused returned to Poonam. According to her, the accused visited the police station on two occasions and transferred Rs 30 lakh to her account as part of a supposed settlement — an interaction witnessed and facilitated by the police. Despite this, the Karnal police filed a closure report (challan) on Aug 4, 2023, stating the accused were untraceable and omitting any mention of the money repaid or the affidavits of compromise signed by the petitioner and her husband, the petitioner submitted. In her plea, she sought the quashing of the Aug 4, 2023, challan submitted by the in-charge of cyber crime police station, Karnal, and to transfer the investigation to an independent agency — either the crime branch, CBI, or a district police unit other than Karnal — under the supervision of the DGP, Haryana.
