Malaysia, Germany Continue To Strengthen Defence Cooperation
BERLIN (Germany), May 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Germany are committed to continuing to strengthen bilateral defence ties through various strategic initiatives, including cooperation agreements, military training, and capacity building in the field of security and defence technology.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the matter was among those discussed during his meeting with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in conjunction with the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 Forum held here.
'Germany and Malaysia enjoy good relations in the field of defence, and we deeply value the cooperation that has been fostered over the years. Whenever the opportunity arises, we make it a point to meet and exchange views on the current geopolitical and security landscape,' he said when met here yesterday.

He also welcomed ASEAN's decision to accept Germany as an observer country in the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM), while hoping that the country would play a meaningful role in the regional security platform.
'Malaysia is grateful for Germany's willingness to join the ADMM as an observer and is confident that this participation will contribute to the peace and stability of the Southeast Asian region,' he said.
At the meeting, Mohamed Khaled said Germany also expressed its intention to sign a Letter of Intent with Malaysia to facilitate and expedite all forms of defence cooperation between the two countries.
According to him, both parties are currently discussing and finalising the document.

SHAH ALAM - With less than three weeks to go before Malaysia's 68th Independence Day celebrations, calls have been made for Malaysians to focus on unity rather than allowing political controversy over upside-down Jalur Gemilang incidents to divide society. Former National Unity Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasised that the national flag represents unity, pride and identity; and must be respected by all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. 'We hoist the Jalur Gemilang to show that we are proud of our country and as a mark of respect for the symbol of a sovereign nation. What is important now is that all parties, especially the public, should not politicise this issue. 'If an incident of the Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down was unintentional, then the party involved should apologise, admit it was a mistake and correct it. That is all,' he said. Lee added that if such incidents occurred due to negligence and without intent, the government should focus on educating and raising awareness among those involved. He argued that no one would deliberately want to fly the flag upside down and turn it into an issue. 'Perhaps there are those who do not know or are ignorant about this matter. That is why I suggest that the government should publicise and run an awareness campaign showing the correct way to hoist the Jalur Gemilang,' he suggested. Universiti Malaya Media Coordinator at the International Institute of Public Policy and Management (Inpuma) Dr G Manimaran, echoed this sentiment as well. He urged a return to the fundamentals of civic education to prevent such incidents in the future. 'Lately, we have been politicising this issue more than seeking solutions to correct the mistake. We have not looked at the root cause of the problem. We need to go back to the basics, which is civic and citizenship education and this should be from all levels,' he said. Senator Professor Emeritus Datuk Seri Dr Awang Sariyan took a firmer stance, stressing that the government must ensure acts of disrespect towards the Jalur Gemilang are treated seriously and dealt with through legal action. 'The government must take firm action through enforcement agencies. Anyone committing the offence of insulting the national flag must be prosecuted in court. The punishment that can be imposed is a maximum fine of RM20,000 or a maximum prison term of three years, or both. 'The government's firmness is important so that insulting the national flag, which is equivalent to insulting the nation, is not taken lightly and does not recur,' he said.

France admits role in Cameroon independence war repression
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron formally acknowledged France's role in violent repression during Cameroon's struggle for independence in a letter signed on July 30 but only disclosed on Tuesday. The letter, addressed to Cameroonian President Paul Biya, follows the findings of a joint Franco-Cameroonian commission that investigated France's role and involvement against the fight for independence between 1945 and 1971. The Cameroon government did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. Cameroon was a German colony until it was split between Britain and France after World War One. Under United Nations trusteeship, the French-administered area gained independence in 1960 while the southern British Cameroons voted to join French Cameroon in a federation in 1961. 'The commission's historians clearly established that a war took place in Cameroon, during which French colonial authorities and military forces committed various forms of violent repression in several regions of the country, a war that continued beyond 1960 with France's support for actions taken by the independent Cameroonian authorities,' Macron said in the letter. Macron also acknowledged France's responsibility in the deaths of independence leaders Ruben Um Nyobè, Paul Momo, Isaac Nyobè Pandjock and Jérémie Ndéléné, who were killed between 1958 and 1960 during military operations conducted under French command. The French president pledged to open archives, support historical initiatives, and create a joint working group to implement the commission's recommendations, aiming to reconcile historical memory and strengthen Franco-Cameroonian ties. Starting with 17th-century outposts and expanding in the 19th century, France built a vast colonial empire, notably in Africa, lasting until the 1960s decolonization. The letter follows previous steps by Macron to confront France's colonial legacy, including acknowledgments of French responsibility in the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the Algerian War. 'As government media, agencies like Bernama, RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) and the Department of Information (Japen) must work to improve the quality of news coverage in Sabah, especially as the State continues to face a wide range of issues - political, social, developmental and economic,' he said. Wong stressed that it is vital for government media to provide accurate and trustworthy information, especially in the face of misinformation and politically charged narratives that often circulate online. 'As a government news agency, Bernama - along with RTM - must ensure that the information we deliver is factual and responsible, as social media is often flooded with inaccurate and misleading stories,' he added, reiterating that official media outlets remain reliable sources of information. Musa, a former Chief Minister, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025.
