Stick to trusted news sources: Bernama boss
Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Musa (right) receiving a souvenir from Wong. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman on Tuesday received a courtesy call from Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai at Istana Seri Kinabalu, here. Wong's visit, which was his first since Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was also accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau Chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh and photographer Zamain Singkui. The 40-minute meeting was conducted in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Wong said discussions with the Governor focused on the role of government media agencies in combating the spread of fake news, particularly on social media. The meeting also touched on the exchange of views and ideas, as well as current issues in Sabah, and how to enhance news coverage to counter misinformation more effectively. 'As government media, agencies like Bernama, RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) and the Department of Information (Japen) must work to improve the quality of news coverage in Sabah, especially as the State continues to face a wide range of issues - political, social, developmental and economic,' he said. Wong stressed that it is vital for government media to provide accurate and trustworthy information, especially in the face of misinformation and politically charged narratives that often circulate online. 'As a government news agency, Bernama - along with RTM - must ensure that the information we deliver is factual and responsible, as social media is often flooded with inaccurate and misleading stories,' he added, reiterating that official media outlets remain reliable sources of information. Musa, a former Chief Minister, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia, ASEAN to discuss Myanmar election plans in Sept 19 visit
SEREMBAN: Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that his official visit to Myanmar on Sept 19 will include discussions on the country's planned elections. He will be joined by counterparts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand during the working visit. The delegation aims to ensure the elections, scheduled for late this year, genuinely benefit Myanmar's people. Mohamad stated that the visit's outcomes will be presented at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 26 to 28. He emphasised Myanmar's need to fully comply with the Five-Point Consensus, including ceasefire and humanitarian aid provisions. 'As long as Myanmar lacks political stability, the Rohingya refugee issue remains unresolved,' he said. Bangladesh currently hosts 1.3 million Rohingya refugees, primarily in Cox's Bazar. Malaysia shelters nearly 150,000 Rohingya refugees on a temporary basis. Mohamad seeks clarity on whether elections will proceed nationwide, given 63 areas remain under emergency rule. Myanmar's junta recently formed a new body to oversee elections, ending the state of emergency in place since 2021. The Security and Stability Commission, led by Min Aung Hlaing, officially lifted the emergency status. - Bernama

PM Anwar To Deliver Key Address At MAPPA XX Tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to deliver a significant address to Malaysia's civil servants during the 20th edition of Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX) gathering at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), tomorrow. According to Dr Saharah Sapiyi, Head of the Centre for Communication and Language Studies at the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), the Prime Minister will deliver the address at 3.30 pm, marking the highlight of the annual event. 'MAPPA XX serves as a key platform for the Prime Minister to engage directly with civil servants and communicate his aspirations for the nation. Typically, this is where major announcements related to the civil service are made. 'Last year, the Prime Minister unveiled the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), and this year, we've been informed that new announcements will be made, including the launch of the Public Service Talent Development Policy which will serve as as guide for heads of departments and agencies in developing talents in their respective organisations,' she said in video call during Bernama TV's Malaysia Petang Ini programme. Saharah said this year's MAPPA is being held under the theme Perkhidmatan Awam MADANI Teras Kecemerlangan (MADANI Civil Service: Pillar of Excellence), highlighting not just leadership aspirations, but also a reflection on core Malaysia MADANI values, which guide current governance reforms. 'The event also emphasises the civil service reform agenda led by the Chief Secretary to the Government, alongside values-driven service excellence promoted by the Director-General of Public Service,' she explained. According to Saharah, before the main address tomorrow, civil servants attending MAPPA XX are invited to join Tazkirah Jumaat (religious reflection session) starting at 12.45 pm, followed by Friday prayers at Dewan Putra, PICC, which can accommodate up to 1,000 congregants. Also lined up in conjunction with MAPPA XX is the Cakna Inspirasi Forum at 2.30 pm, focusing on social media and the spirit of independence, 43 exhibition booths featuring ministries, government agencies, and departments from 9 am to 5 pm, including counters for traffic summons payment and discount, as well as admission offers from higher education institutions. -- BERNAMA

Malaysia, ASEAN Members Work Closely To Advance Safe, Regulated Nuclear Technology
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 14 (Bernama) – Malaysia has been working closely with ASEAN member countries to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and regulated use of nuclear technology in the region. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said various initiatives, including capacity-building programmes, technical exchanges, and strategic collaborations, have strengthened regional preparedness and resilience against emerging challenges. 'None of these achievements would have been possible without your (ASEAN members') longstanding support and collaboration,' he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) here today. Also present were Atom Malaysia director-general Noraishah Pungut and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute director Dr Carlo Abundo Arcilla. Mohammad Yusof said Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEANTOM this year, remains fully committed to ASEANTOM's shared goals and will continue to contribute actively as a dedicated member. He said this is in line with the official theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', under which Malaysia will ensure that no one is left behind and that every ASEAN citizen benefits from the region's progress and sustainability. 'While promoting development that safeguards our environment and ensures long-term prosperity for generations to come, may our continued collaboration also pave the way for a safer, more innovative, and sustainable future for all,' he said. Mohammad Yusof also stressed that the spirit of unity, trust, and cooperation that defines ASEAN and the ASEANTOM must continue so that the peace and prosperity of the region can be maintained. Earlier, at the closing ceremony of the meeting, Malaysia officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEANTOM to the Philippines, marking the end of its term as chair.
