Dame Joanna Lumley, a stalwart of the TV and film industry with a career spanning several decades, shows no signs of slowing down as she nears her 80th birthday. Known for her femme-fatale roles, comedic timing, and stage performances, the actress continues to captivate audiences.
Born in India in 1946 during the British Raj, Lumley moved to the UK as a young girl and attended boarding school. Despite an initial rejection from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she found her way into the acting world.
Her first significant role was a brief appearance as a Bond girl in 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. She then secured roles in popular TV shows like Coronation Street, Steptoe and Son, and Are You Being Served?, before landing her breakthrough role as Purdey in The New Avengers.

Speaking at the SANDS International Film Festival of St Andrews on April 26, the iconic star expressed her determination to continue working in the industry, reports the Mirror.
"I'll be here when I'm 90 - as long as I can speak. When I was 16 and told the careers officer at my convent school that I wanted to go into acting, he told me that the only jobs open to me in film would be as a continuity or makeup girl," she shared, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Joanna, who has previously voiced her thoughts on what she would 'ban' for teenagers, commented: "In the past women like me would have been sidelined at 38 but now there are lead parts for people in their 50s and big parts for those in their 70s."
Despite now being a celebrated name, the star of Amandaland opened up about the difficulties she faced on her journey to fame, especially as a young single mum at the tender age of 21.
"I've been skint – I had no money, and we lived off Marmite sandwiches for months, and I burnt furniture to keep us warm," she recalled, adding: "But having a son to look after gave me such motivation to work, and it wasn't so bad – it made me tough, and I learnt resilience."
She's just landed a fabulous new role in the Netflix sensation Wednesday, where she'll portray Hester Frump, the protagonist's grandmother. As well as being excited about the wigs and makeup for her spooky role, Joanna shared insights into her true character away from the camera glare.
With a history that took her from modelling to stardom, Joanna learned early the art of budgeting and quick thinking, often doing her own styling from head to toe in her formative years.
Now, travelling the globe as a sought-after actress, Joanna – a longstanding vegetarian – is known for having just one modest requirement on set, in stark contrast to the stereotypical demands of the Hollywood elite.
She shared: "The only thing I put on my rider when travelling is that I don't eat meat or fish in case I get an upset tummy," and added: "So if I am presented with meat when I visit somewhere I just say, 'Oh it is against my religion.'".

Corrie proposal cancelled in early ITVX release after unexpected setback

This article contains spoilers for tonight's Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX. Carla Connor's (Alison King) well laid plans to propose to girlfriend Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) were put on hold in tonight's Coronation Street after a close call. The factory boss left Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) thrilled when she announced her plans to ask Lisa to marry her earlier this week, but he seemed disappointed when Carla explained that she wasn't going to make it a big thing. His pointed comments inspired Carla to do something special, and she headed to the Rovers to enlist Glenda Shuttleworth's (Jodie Prenger) help. Glenda could hardly contain her excitement as Carla explained her proposal plan and asked the barmaid to slip the engagement ring into Lisa's glass of champagne. Of course, she agreed, and Carla moved on to stage two of her plan: Getting Lisa to the Rovers. It was harder than she expected to lure Lisa away from work, but eventually the detective gave in and agreed to meet her at the pub. Carla was clearly nervous about the upcoming proposal, and when Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) sat herself at their table to discuss her own upcoming nuptials, Carla was clearly on edge. Debbie was keen to get opinions on her wedding invitations, and Lisa was happy to share, also revealing that Debbie had the same wedding scrapbook as Lisa's late wife Becky. As they discussed Lisa's previous marriage, Debbie asked how Becky proposed, and the answer caught Carla completely off-guard. As Glenda emerged from the back room with two champagne flutes in hand, Lisa told Debbie how Becky had dropped the engagement ring into Lisa's champagne glass. Panicking, Carla pulled the plug on her proposal and sent Glenda away, with Lisa none the wiser. Later, Carla lamented to Ryan that she felt as though she had had her thunder stolen by a dead woman after the unexpected setback of Lisa's revelation that Becky had proposed in the same way Carla had planned. Comforting her, Ryan pointed out that it was a tacky way to propose anyway, and she could do better than Googling the best ways to pop the question. This isn't the first time the couple have had a botched proposal, with Lisa having already asked Carla to marry her this year. Lisa's proposal came during a time of turmoil for her, as she struggled to deal with Craig Tinker's death and the memories it stirred up surrounding Becky's murder. More Trending As she reflected on how short life is, Lisa asked Carla to marry her, and was disappointed when she turned her down. However, Carla was quick to explain that it wouldn't be a no forever, it was just the wrong time given everything that had happened. Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung love this French face cream which keeps skin looking young- and it's less than £15

Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung love this French face cream which keeps skin looking young- and it's less than £15 The A313 Vitamin A Lightweight Face Cream has been hailed as the 'French-girl secret to great skin' and is packed with anti-ageing ingredients like retinyl palmitate Sienna Miller is a huge fan of the affordable retinol (Image: Getty Images) Back in the noughties, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller were hailed as two of the most stylish and sought-after "it girls", and even in 2025, they remain our favourite sources for recommendations. Despite being celebrated for their unique styles, they share a common trait, as their skin appears as youthful now as it did a decade ago. We've discovered the secret to their enduring youthfulness, as both rely on an incredibly affordable retinol-infused cream as a crucial part of their skincare routine. Last year, Sienna featured in Harper's Bazaar's 'Inside my Beauty Bag' video series, where she disclosed that she uses the A313 Vitamin A Lightweight Face Cream, available for just £13.89 on Amazon. In the video, Sienna revealed: "This is a really fantastic secret, it's a French retinol that you can get over the counter. Alexa Chung told me about it because she's got the most amazing skin, and it's described as 'the French-girl secret to great skin' – so we all need that." This so-called French-girl secret cream is loaded with anti-ageing ingredients like retinyl palmitate, which help enhance skin texture, reduce fine lines and boost your skin's overall radiance. The A313 Face Cream also helps diminish wrinkles and sagging skin, keeping it plump and firm for a more youthful appearance. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here Besides tackling signs of ageing, it's also helpful for diminishing hyperpigmentation and dark marks left behind by spots, not to mention it can help prevent acne flare-ups. It also aids in boosting collagen production and smoothing texture, leaving your complexion more balanced and plumper-looking, reports the Mirror. The A313 Face Cream is best incorporated into your evening skincare regime, as with all retinols it can make skin more susceptible to the sun. That's why it's advisable to steer clear of using it in the morning and always ensure you apply SPF the following day (which you should be doing regardless to further guard against sun damage and premature signs of ageing!) Whilst you can use the cream alone or blend it with your preferred serum or moisturiser, if you favour a product that already ticks all boxes, the Olay Retinol 24 Night Cream is £21.99 and merges retinol with an intensely hydrating moisturiser for the ideal final step in your evening regime. The retinol has been called the "secret to French girl skin" (Image: Amazon) Alternatively, Beauty Pie's Super Retinol + Vitamin C Night Renewal Moisturiser is £32 and features 1% retinol complex and shea butter to moisturise whilst shielding skin and diminishing fine lines. Nevertheless Amazon customers have clearly been delighted with the outcomes of the budget-friendly A313 Face Cream. One penned: "Best cream for hyper pigmentation highly recommended saw results in a week drastically reduced my dark spots highly recommended make sure you mix with moisturiser." Another wrote: "I've recently started using the A313, and although it's only been a short period, I've already noticed some positive changes in my cream has a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue. It's easy to apply and feels comfortable on the skin." However, not everyone had a positive experience, with one customer stating: "I tried the product for two weeks and could feel it making a difference. However, I had to stop as the persistent itching was unbearable." It's important to note that, like all retinol-based products, you should introduce the A313 Face Cream gradually to your skin, particularly if you're new to using retinol. Overuse can damage your skin barrier, leading to itching, burning or drying sensations. Yet, many customers were thrilled with the cream, with one exclaiming: ""The best cream ever. I use Murad Sculptra usually but this cream is far better and the price is very affordable. Article continues below "Beats all the expensive creams from far away. I recommended this cream to all my friends and colleagues."
