Max Anstie Addresses Supercross Red Flag Ruling in Controversial Detroit Finish

Yahoo16-02-2025

In the closing seconds of the 250SX East Main Event in Detroit, AMA officials waved the red flag for a hard crash by Cameron McAdoo. A multi-second lead by Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing's Max Anstie was erased as a restart would be declared to determine the finish of the second round of the 250SX East class.
That decision did not come without controversy as Anstie would finish second when the checkered flag officially waved.
'I thought the rule was 90 percent and it was done,' Anstie stated during a postrace press conference.
The red flag rule was recently updated in the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross official rulebook and carried over into 2025.
In 2023 and years before, the rule referenced was Section 4.25b (Race Rules and Procedures – Restarts) which stated, 'The race is stopped (with 3 laps completed by the leader and less than 90% of the total distance completed by the race leader…' In the 250SX races, the Main Event is timed at 15 minutes plus a lap, meaning once the clock expired, the next lap by the leader would be the white flag lap. 90% was simply a reference to the clock, so if the red flag was waved with 1:30 or less remaining on the clock, the race would be declared official based on the last completed lap by each individual rider to determine the final running order.
But in 2024, AMA updated the wording of the rule requiring the clock to be fully expired.
Section 1.8.11 (AMA Supercross Rules – Restarts and Red Flag Procedures) now states, 'When a race is stopped after the leader completes three (3) laps but prior to time expiring on the race clock, the following procedures will apply,' with a step-by-step process of reorganizing the grid in preparation for the restart.
For Anstie, he knew work still had to be done and stayed focused on the task at hand.
'In that situation, it was very tough because I'm sitting there thinking, 'I've got two very good sprinters and strong guys behind me, as in R.J. (Hampshire) and Levi (Kitchen),' reflected Anstie. 'I knew I had two laps to go, so I was doing all the safe lines. I had mentally, for a couple of laps, decided that I was just not gonna do anything crazy, hit my marks and do the doubles and not do anything crazy. And then the red flag, and I was like, 'Oh no, you've got to send it again.' And I called on the radio to the guys on the team, 'Where shall I go in the sand?' Because I knew that was going to be a point and I had only taken outside the whole main, and it was just a safe line for me. It might not have been the fastest, but it was a little blown out by the end there.'
Despite not getting the result he wanted and was on pace for before the red flag, he was still pleased in being able to maintain pace with Kitchen and Hampshire to finish between the two competitors.
'I'm pleased in a way that I didn't do anything silly in those last few laps,' Anstie continued I still came out of it with a second, good points. And at the end of the day, it was still a really fun race. I was just, to be honest, really happy that I was able to run that pace and feel comfortable at that pace. It was good.'
Anstie still leads the 250SX East Championship Point Standings over Kitchen by nine points after two rounds. His win in Tampa maintains his red plate when the series heads to Daytona Beach in two weeks. Gate drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET live on Peacock.

Campaign to help stadiums install solar panels launched

Southampton's Utilita Bowl in focus - Utilita and BASIS announce collaboration to fast-track solar adoption across the UK's sporting venues (Image: Utilita) An energy-saving expert has started a campaign to help stadiums get solar panels. Southampton company Utilita plans to fast-track solar PV installation in sports venues. The "Are You Sporting Solar?" campaign aims to identify and tackle barriers preventing clubs from adopting solar energy. Advertisement In association with the British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS), the initiative began by surveying sports organisations to identify issues hindering adoption. Ella Moorey, group sustainability lead at Utilita, said: "Sport has the power to inspire change, and by embracing solar energy, stadiums and venues can lead the way in demonstrating environmental responsibility. "At Utilita, we believe that enabling the adoption of solar PV across the sporting landscape is not just an opportunity - it's a necessity." David Mann, chief executive of Hampshire's Utilita Bowl, said: "This campaign will be a game-changer in helping sporting organisations fast-track their way to accessing sustainable energy and enabling clubs to redirect those savings into making other sustainable adaptations."

Kayden Minear makes Pro Motocross debut in Thunder Valley, qualifies 12th

LAKEWOOD, Colorado: Kayden Minear swept the motos of the SMX Next division last week at Hangtown Motocross Park in Rancho Cordova, California, and with his perfect score of two points, bettered the result of the riders in second, Landen Gibson, and third, Leum Oehlhof, by an even larger margin. That strong run encouraged Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing to give the Australian rider an opportunity to race against the professionals. 'We talked about it for a while, but [last week's results] signified how good I'm riding at the moment and that gave them a little kick in the butt to get me up into the pro ranks,' Minear told NBC Sports during Friday's Media sessions. 'I know [the field is] deep, but I ride with the pros every week. I know what I'm capable of.' Minear will ride this weekend in Thunder Valley and next week at High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, before switching gear in preparation for the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals. Depending on his results in these rounds, fans may see him on the bike again at the end of the Pro Motocross season. Minear was 19th overall in the first qualification session and improved in Q2 to land 12th overall on the chart. England's Dawson relishing return from international wilderness

England's Liam Dawson (C) celebrates with team-mates after dismissing West Indies' Johnson Charles during the 1st T20 at Chester-le-Street (Oli SCARFF) Liam Dawson is determined to make the most of his surprise recall to international duty after believing his England career had come to an end. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner had won just 20 caps across all three formats since making his debut in 2016. Advertisement He appeared surplus to requirements as England selected a succession of other slow bowlers in red and white-ball cricket, many of whom had inferior county records to Hampshire mainstay Dawson. But he produced a reminder of his quality with 4-20 and a player-of-the-match award as England marked Harry Brook's first T20 as captain with a 21-run win over the West Indies at Chester-le-Street on Friday. "I had got to an age where I probably thought international cricket was gone," said Dawson after taking his best figures in T20 internationals. "In my domestic career, I've tried to go out there and just enjoy playing for whoever I'm playing for. It was about going out there and not worrying about playing for England. Advertisement "I think that can hamper you sometimes so I've not really worried about that. I'm at an age now where I know that I'm close to finishing." Brook gave Dawson the new ball in Durham, a sign of his confidence in the bowler, and perhaps a marker for next year's T20 World Cup on turning pitches in India and Sri Lanka. "Personally, I think he's been knocking on the door for years to try and solidify that spot and the performance we saw from him was awesome," said Brook of Dawson. "Him and Adil Rashid working in tandem at both ends is going be good to watch in the coming years. He can also help the younger lads along the way, to have him in the inner circle when they are bowling is going to help us a lot." Advertisement The three-match series continues in Bristol on Sunday before finishing at Dawson's home ground in Southampton on Tuesday. Well though he bowled in Durham, Dawson is taking nothing for granted. "I know how cricket works, you've got to be consistent and it's only one game," he said. "So I'll park this and go again. It would be nice to play at my home ground, if selected." jdg/pb
