Jafaican star Peter Andre breaks his silence on problematic movie's backlash

Daily Mirror21-05-2025

Peter Andre has spoken out about the backlash against his new film Jafaican, which sees the Mysterious Girl singer portray a wheeler-dealer who poses as a violent Jamaican gangster
Singer-turned-actor Peter Andre has hit back at critics slamming his latest movie Jafaican, in which he stars as a faux gangster. The heartthrob behind Mysterious Girl takes centre stage in Fredi Nwaka's latest comedy romp – playing hustler Gary Buckle.
The character tries to score a windfall by pretending to be mob boss Denton 'Kill Man' Powell donning a fake dreadlock wig and putting on a Jamaican accent.

While Jafaican has garnered positive reviews since its unveiling, the flick has been marred by accusations of cultural appropriation and being labelled "tone-deaf" by some viewers. Nevertheless, Peter Andre rebuffed the backlash aiming at his latest venture.

The pop icon advises skeptics: "I think it's very easy to criticise something based on a trailer. I would say: 'Go and watch the film first,' you will see what the film is about and you will see the context."
He continued to tell the Daily Star: "A critic should also be able to criticise, so I understand how it is."
Andre, acknowledging that the film won't be everyone's cup of tea, encouraged naysayers to view it before casting judgment. In defence of his work, Peter commented: "In regards to critics, I think it is really important for people to all have different opinions.
"I don't think it is right to just expect everyone to like what you're doing, but I've always said that, you know, in anything I've ever done I've always had people saying: 'Don't do that, you shouldn't do that, that's not the right song to release, that's not a good video clip."
The artist-turned-thespian, acclaimed for roles in the likes of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, David Brent: Life on the Road and Keith Lemon: The Film, divulged his reasons for embracing his latest character.

Refusing to be swayed by naysayers, he stated: "If I sat and listened to everybody telling me what not to do, I would never have achieved anything! I think sometimes you have to just go outside of your comfort zone and push yourself."
The movie chronicles the mishaps of a London crook who must scrape together £35,000 to pay for his grandmother's care home expenses. When he catches wind of a heist that could solve all his problems, Gary jets off to Jamaica, only to find himself in a downward spiral.
As locals cotton on to his impersonation of Denton 'Kill Man' Powell to snare a fortune, Gary finds himself in a tight spot. 'Jafaican' is currently showing in select ODEON Cinemas.
Peter's kids Princess and Junior were by his side at a recent a red carpet screening for his latest film. The event in London saw the family attend the Genesis Cinema for the private VIP event, posing for photographs ahead of the much-discussed film's debut.
While promoting the movie on Australian TV earlier in the month, Peter said of the criticism: "Well, to be fair, I mean, I think it's good to get all sorts of feedback. I mean, this is not ... it's my first lead role but I've done quite a few roles before. And all of them, I've played different characters."

Peter Andre, 52, reveals downside to age gap relationship with wife Emily, 35

Peter Andre has defended the 16-year age gap in his relationship with wife Emily MacDonagh – but one incident that showed their generational gap still makes them laugh. The musician and TV star, 52, married doctor Emily, 35, in 2015, soon after welcoming children Amelia, 11, Theo, nine, and one-year-old Arabella. Peter also has two children, Junior, 19, and Princess, 17, with former wife Katie Price. Peter and Emily have experienced some backlash against their 16-year age gap, which the I'm A Celebrity contestant defended in a new interview. In his column for New! magazine, Peter discussed Stephen Fry, 67, speaking about the age gap in his marriage with Elliott Spencer, 38, and how Peter and Emily's age difference 'works' for them. 'It all depends on the relationship, how the partners are with each other, and how they view things, I think. There's a 16-year gap between me and Emily, and it really works for us,' he wrote. However, he did muse over one incident where their generational gap was very noticeable. 'There's one thing we do laugh about, though… We were at the Pride of Britain awards one year and Jon Bon Jovi came over to chat. I've met him many times over the years and he's a lovely person,' he continued. After the introduction, Peter was shocked to discover Emily had no idea who the legendary rock star was, asking her husband 'What's a Bon Jovi?' 'We laughed about that a lot afterwards! It's in those moments we may realise the age gap – usually with music and films – but in general, we love the same things. I think it's what works for you in a relationship. Who are we to judge?' he said. Peter, who is currently on screens in controversial thriller comedy Jafaican, met Emily in 2012, with them tying the knot three years later. He previously discussed not opting for a pre-nuptial agreement before tying the knot, saying: 'I think it does depend on upbringing. So some cultures think that you should always keep your own money, some think you should all be together. 'But as you grow older, you start to figure it out yourself. I know with Emily at the start I had different views to what I've got now. I mean, we don't have a prenup. We've got children together.' More Trending Last year, Peter said he and Emily were 'pretty sure' Arabella would be their last child, with the singer speaking out numerous times about the prospect of having a vasectomy. 'I appeared on Loose Women last week to promote the Frankie Valli tour and one of the topics we discussed is whether a man should get a vasectomy,' he wrote back in February. 'Having children is a big decision. We frequently expect the woman to have to find a way and take measures not to become pregnant, but actually I realise that us men have a responsibility too. 'The problem is, like many, I'm a bit scared of having that kind of procedure. I know, call me a wimp. Who knows? Never say never, I guess.' Got a story? Peter Andre opens up about nearly 20-year age gap with wife Emily following major mistake

Peter Andre has spoken out on the nearly 20-year age difference between him and his wife, Emily MacDonagh, sharing a specific incident that highlighted the age gap between them. Peter Andre has spoken out regarding his age gap relationship with wife Emily MacDonagh, who is 16 years his junior. The couple tied the knot in 2015 and share three children together - Amelia, Theo and Arabella. In his weekly column for New! Magazine, the Mysterious Girl singer explained that their relationship dynamic "works" for them and joked that age is just a number, though he did share one moment when the age difference was particularly noticeable. ‌ In his column, Peter started by discussing 67-year-old Stephen Fry's marriage to Elliot Spencer, who is three decades his junior at age 38, the Mirror reports. ‌ Peter admitted that he's not one to judge, saying: "Actor Stephen Fry has talked about the 30-year age gap in his relationship with his partner, Elliott Spencer." "It all depends on the relationship, how the partners are with each other and how they view things, I think. There's a 16-year gap between me and Emily, and it really works for us," he continued. That's not to say the age difference doesn't stand out at times, as Peter went on to explain: "There's one thing we do laugh about, though… We were at the Pride of Britain awards one year and Jon Bon Jovi came over to chat. I've met him many times over the years and he's a lovely person." "He introduced himself to Emily and after he walked away, she turned to me and said, 'Who was that?' I was like, 'Are you serious? It's Bon Jovi.' In the most confused but innocent voice, she said, 'What's a Bon Jovi?' ‌ "We laughed about that a lot afterwards! It's in those moments we may realise the age gap –usually with music and films – but in general, we love the same things. I think it's what works for you in a relationship. Who are we to judge?," he joked. The couple first crossed paths when Emily was just 20-years-old and Peter was 36, although they didn't start dating until two years later. They were introduced through Emily's dad, Dr Ruaraidh MacDonagh, a consultant urologist. Back in 2010, Peter underwent kidney stone removal surgery performed by Dr MacDonagh, it was through this connection that he later met Emily, who was then a medical student. ‌ Their relationship began in 2012, and three years later they tied the knot in a stunning ceremony held at Mamhead House and Castle in Devon. Today, they are proud parents to three children together, with Emily also acting as a stepmum to Peter's older children - Junior and Princess - who he shares with former glamour model Katie Price. The family maintains a private presence online, choosing to keep the faces of their youngest children off of social media.

Lorraine Kelly pauses show to apologise to Matt Baker's wife after awkward name blunder

Lorraine Kelly was left red-faced after she called Matt Baker's wife Nicola by the wrong name before swiftly apologising for the awkward blunder during Monday's show Lorraine Kelly had to issue an apology to Matt Baker and his wife Nicola during Monday's programme. In the recent episode, Lorraine, 65, chatted with Matt, 47, about his new series exploring the British Isles, which led to a conversation about Nicola's latest book release. ‌ Nicola launched her third instalment in the Whistledown Farm Adventures, titled Meeting Meg, which hit the shelves on May 8 earlier this year. ‌ But while speaking to Nicola, Lorraine mistakenly referred to her as Rachel, promptly correcting herself with an apology for the slip-up. Discussing the books, Nicola remarked: "What I really wanted was to try and bring my experiences and things to the books so kids reading it would feel like they're experiencing farm life.", reports the Express. "That's the lovely thing about writing, you can put whatever you like into it and hopefully it feels real and kids will get a flavour of what farming is." To which Lorraine replied: "It's gorgeous and the illustrations by Rachael Dean, they're beautiful. "I always think that really makes a book as well, when you put some illustrations in there." ‌ However, later in the conversation, Lorraine got her wires crossed, saying: "Now you two met when you were babies, right? Teenagers! Had you though, Rachel..." before quickly interjecting: "Sorry, Nicola! I'm getting mixed up! Nicola, were you into farming, were you a farm girl?" Nicola responded: "No, I wasn't a farm girl, we grew up in the countryside so I loved being outdoors and the outdoor life but farming was something that came to me when we met." ‌ Ex-Blue Peter host Matt Baker was raised on his family's farm in Durham and now resides in an impressive farmhouse in Hertfordshire with his family. Matt has fronted several farming programmes alongside his family, including 'Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales' and 'Our Dream Farm with Matt Baker'. Matt is now presenting a new series titled 'Matt Baker's British Isles', which sees the former The One Show presenter traverse the four nations, celebrating the remarkable people and jaw-dropping locations that make up our rich tapestry of life. Earlier this month, Matt hinted at the upcoming show on Instagram, posting: "My new series Matt Baker's British Isles starts Tuesday on More 4 at 9pm hope you can join me to celebrate the wonderful characters that make our home nations what they are. Can't wait for you to see it #England #Northern Ireland #Scotland and #Wales." Catch Lorraine on weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITV X.
