Jafaican star Peter Andre breaks his silence on problematic movie's backlash

Daily Mirror21-05-2025

Peter Andre has spoken out about the backlash against his new film Jafaican, which sees the Mysterious Girl singer portray a wheeler-dealer who poses as a violent Jamaican gangster
Singer-turned-actor Peter Andre has hit back at critics slamming his latest movie Jafaican, in which he stars as a faux gangster. The heartthrob behind Mysterious Girl takes centre stage in Fredi Nwaka's latest comedy romp – playing hustler Gary Buckle.
The character tries to score a windfall by pretending to be mob boss Denton 'Kill Man' Powell donning a fake dreadlock wig and putting on a Jamaican accent.

While Jafaican has garnered positive reviews since its unveiling, the flick has been marred by accusations of cultural appropriation and being labelled "tone-deaf" by some viewers. Nevertheless, Peter Andre rebuffed the backlash aiming at his latest venture.

The pop icon advises skeptics: "I think it's very easy to criticise something based on a trailer. I would say: 'Go and watch the film first,' you will see what the film is about and you will see the context."
He continued to tell the Daily Star: "A critic should also be able to criticise, so I understand how it is."
Andre, acknowledging that the film won't be everyone's cup of tea, encouraged naysayers to view it before casting judgment. In defence of his work, Peter commented: "In regards to critics, I think it is really important for people to all have different opinions.
"I don't think it is right to just expect everyone to like what you're doing, but I've always said that, you know, in anything I've ever done I've always had people saying: 'Don't do that, you shouldn't do that, that's not the right song to release, that's not a good video clip."
The artist-turned-thespian, acclaimed for roles in the likes of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, David Brent: Life on the Road and Keith Lemon: The Film, divulged his reasons for embracing his latest character.

Refusing to be swayed by naysayers, he stated: "If I sat and listened to everybody telling me what not to do, I would never have achieved anything! I think sometimes you have to just go outside of your comfort zone and push yourself."
The movie chronicles the mishaps of a London crook who must scrape together £35,000 to pay for his grandmother's care home expenses. When he catches wind of a heist that could solve all his problems, Gary jets off to Jamaica, only to find himself in a downward spiral.
As locals cotton on to his impersonation of Denton 'Kill Man' Powell to snare a fortune, Gary finds himself in a tight spot. 'Jafaican' is currently showing in select ODEON Cinemas.
Peter's kids Princess and Junior were by his side at a recent a red carpet screening for his latest film. The event in London saw the family attend the Genesis Cinema for the private VIP event, posing for photographs ahead of the much-discussed film's debut.
While promoting the movie on Australian TV earlier in the month, Peter said of the criticism: "Well, to be fair, I mean, I think it's good to get all sorts of feedback. I mean, this is not ... it's my first lead role but I've done quite a few roles before. And all of them, I've played different characters."

Emmerdale and Coronation Street facing major changes to cut costs, ex-soap boss warns

Talking on The TV Podcast, Peter said: 'You've got Coronation Street being made in Manchester, Emmerdale in Leeds. 'Big savings' 'Could you imagine, rather like the daytime consolidation, that ITV will decide to have them both made in the same place under one umbrella? Big savings. 'You still keep Emmerdale set in Yorkshire, but it could be made in Manchester and Salford, which is a bigger hub for ITV. I don't think that's inconceivable — it might be being planned as we speak.' Merging the two shows in any way once seemed unthinkable, but recently ITV announced that it would air an episode next year where the soaps would have a joint storyline. The news came around the same time ITV announced a merger of production between Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women, with the expected loss of more than 200 jobs behind the scenes. Currently, Emmerdale is made just north of Leeds while Coronation Street is largely filmed at MediaCity in Salford, having previously been at the Granada Studios in Manchester for decades. Peter continued: 'The new hub for Coronation Street in Salford, it cost many, many millions of pounds and it was better facilities for all the people who worked on it in the old place in the middle of Manchester.' A spokesperson for ITV hit back at Peter's suggestion of a soap filming merge: 'ITV has no plans to merge the productions of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. 'Both are uniquely set in Manchester and Leeds, and that production model will continue for the long term. It's pure speculation to say otherwise.' Katie Price makes surprising comment about ex Peter Andre's wife Emily – despite not speaking to him after split

KATIE Price has made a surprise comment about her ex Peter Andre's new wife despite admitting she doesn't speak to him following their split. The famous couple called it quits in 2009 and no longer communicate with one another. 6 6 6 But in a rare comment, Katie has praised Peter's new wife, GP Emily Andre and expressed her feelings about her ex having found someone new. Katie and Peter share two children together - Princess and Junior - and whilst his love life has been steady with Emily ever since, Katie has been divorced twice more with a string of failed engagements under her belt. But now Katie has admitted she is glad Peter married Emily as she aired her thoughts on their romance during an interview with Katherine Ryan. She spoke to Katherine on her podcast, What's My Age Again, where she shared her thoughts on the couple who have just celebrated a decade of marriage. Katie told Katherine: "I'm glad he's with Emily. She seems like a proper lady. "I think it'd be weird if he went for someone like me." Furthermore, she admitted her daughter Princess is shocked that her mum and dad were ever once a couple amid the striking differences between Katie and Emily. The former glamour model added: "[Princess] says, 'You're just so nuts mum. When I see you and Emily, you're just so different. I can't imagine you and dad.' "I said, 'I was with your dad six years. Katie Price reveals what she REALLY thinks of ex-husband Peter Andre's wife Emily - after admitting she and the Mysterious Girl singer don't speak anymore

Katie Price has revealed exactly what she thinks about her ex-husband Peter Andre 's wife Emily. Glamour model Katie, 47, and the Mysterious Girl singer, 52, enjoyed a marriage of four years after falling in love while in the I'm A Celebrity jungle in 2004. They went on to have two children together - Junior, 19, and Princess, 17 - but announced their split in 2009. Katie has since walked down the aisle, and been divorced, twice while Peter found love with NHS doctor Emily. They celebrated a decade of marriage this year and share three children - Amelia, 11, Theo, nine and twelve-month-old Arabella. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In a new interview, Peter's ex-wife Katie revealed she's happy he has since moved on and found love again. During an appearance on comedian Katherine Ryan's What's My Age Again Podcast, the 47-year-old said: 'I'm glad he's with Emily. She seems like a proper lady. I think it'd be weird if he went for someone like me.' She also added that her daughter Princess was left baffled after seeing her dad Peter's new wife. 'She says, "You're just so nuts mum. When I see you and Emily, you're just so different. I can't imagine you and dad." 'I said, "I was with your dad six years. Trust me, we had a laugh and bantered together, we did." 'She said, "I just can't imagine dad being like that." I said "But he was, he was like that. We had a laugh." 'And you know, she can't believe that whenever he went anywhere or me, we were together with the kids. And we'd go as a family. 'Emily doesn't do all that for Pete. Me and Pete just did it all together as a family. If we'd got you kids, you would come with us.' It comes after Katie - who revealed she and Peter don't talk at all anymore - opened up about the real reason for their divorce. It had long been rumoured that the glamour model and her ex split over her close relationship with her dressage rider Andrew Gould. During an appearance on Paul C Brunson's podcast We Need To Talk, she said: 'We broke up because he thought I was having an affair with my dressage rider, and I've never slept with him. I just kept my horse there, and I was happy keeping my horse there, and he was married. 'But when me and Pete split, because he used to keep saying, "That's it. I've had enough. I've had enough". It got to a point where I went, "Well f***ing divorce me". And I remember the day, because then I flew to the Maldives with the kids. 'That day, I'm at the airport, it's all on Sky News, it wasn't mutual at all. And then I released a statement saying I don't want to split with Pete, it's Pete that's splitting with me. Until this day, me and Pete have never sat down and spoken about it. 'It's all through lawyers. I've never sat down with him, we probably would've sorted it out but we were kept apart.' After they announced their split, Peter said he was 'gutted' that Katie had taken their children to the Maldives villa where they had honeymooned in 2005. He told the Daily Star: 'Being apart from my kids is just breaking my heart. It's destroying me - I'm absolutely gutted.' Katie added that it is 'the most difficult thing' to co-parent, saying: 'But I realised you get to know what people are really like, and I've had it tough. But yeah, it is sad.' The TV personality and her ex-husband were honest about their jealous rows and were regularly seen arguing on their reality show, Katie & Peter. However, it came as a shock to their huge fanbase when they decided to go their separate ways - and seemingly to Katie, too. Revealing it wasn't her choice to split at the time, she said: 'Pete is the love of my life and my life. We have children together, and I am devastated and disappointed by his decision to separate and divorce me as I married him for life. 'This is not what I want, and the decision has been taken out of my hands. I will not comment further or do any interviews regarding the separation, but I will always love my Pete.'
