Post Office TV drama actress 'immensely proud' of campaigners
They were victims of the faulty Horizon computer software system which led to thousands of PO workers being falsely accused of convicted of wrongdoing. It led to some taking their own lives, being jailed or facing financial and reputational ruin.
Monica starred in Mr Bates vs The Post Office alongside actor Toby Jones, who played Alan, now Sir Alan, 71. In April Sir Alan called on victims to take the Government to court over delays in financial redress.
Bafta award-winning actress Ms Dolan has said she fell in love with acting as she 'just got a feeling from it that I didn't get from anywhere else'.
Speaking as she appeared as the guest on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, the Mr Bates vs the Post Office star said she first got the bug for acting at school.
'I just got a feeling from it that I didn't get from anywhere else,' she told presenter Lauren Laverne. "I think it was basically a feeling of being noticed, or being seen as people now say. I thought, 'I want more of this'.'
Dolan, who won an Olivier award for her role in All About Eve along with a Bafta for Appropriate Adult, received several award nominations for Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
She told Laverne how she prepared to play the real-life character of subpostmistress Jo Hamilton in the acclaimed ITV drama series based on the true story of Horizon IT scandal. 'I think you have to slightly put yourself in there,' Dolan said.
'You have to think, well if I was this person, how would I behave? I was very lucky with Jo because she was definitely more approachable than most people that I've played.
'One of the things I did very early on actually which was really helpful, which I'd definitely do again, was to ask her - if it wasn't too intrusive, and I felt with her that I could - to ask her to record her life story. Just a little version - like a 15 minute version - up to the point where the script begins - where it all starts.
'That was really useful, waiting for filming - I could listen to her voice, and I'd have her voice in my head, and also I'd have her background in my head.
'That was very useful indeed because you're kind of absorbing that person.'
Dolan also said of those who campaigned for justice following the Post Office scandal: 'I was immensely proud of people, for being that collectively angry.'
The actress, who said her luxury item would be a walk-in wardrobe with a cold glass of champagne and a new outfit for every day inside, said she would also like to take a book on flora and fauna on the island so she could identify what she saw.
Among her desert island disc choices were her childhood favourite The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) from the TV show The Banana Splits, MacArthur Park by Richard Harris, and Us Amazonians by the 'tremendous' Kirsty MacColl.

Is that I actually do forget that I've done it. Like it feels so long ago but it's not that long ago. I can't obviously say much about it." She added: "But it was an experience.... I kind of went in there thinking 'yeah, this is probably going to be a piece of p***. Like, I've done the jungle, nothing's going to be harder than that. I hadn't watched the show so I didn't really understand the concept, like obviously I have heard stuff before. "But yeah, it's a unique one I will say and I'm very glad I've done it. But I can't say anything about it, very hush hush.' The update comes after Maura has had a busy few months after moving into her £1.25million five-bedroom dream home in Essex. Maura has earned an estimated £3.2 million in the years since she found fame on the ITV dating show back in 2019 and has now bought a home. Marua has reportedly snapped up a five-bedroom property in the south east of England. The semi-detached house boasts an impressive garden and has huge, floor-to-ceiling windows that allow plenty of natural light to flood in. She wrote alongside some images that she shared on her Instagram: "After the busiest few months.... she's finally in." She added a house emoji and a padlock and key emoji. The drama comes after reports suggest that Maura is heading for an awkward run-in with McFly's Danny Jones at this year's National Television Awards. It will be their first joint public appearance since they became embroiled in a scandal after they were seen kissing at a BRIT Awards after-party, despite Danny being married. Speaking to The Sun, they said: 'Danny is expected to attend the NTAs on September 10, as have all previous reigning jungle winners — and Maura is also going." The source added: 'There will have to be some clever choreography to ensure they don't end up next to each other when walking the red carpet, but they could both end up on stage if I'm A Celebrity wins. Maura won't be answering any questions about the kiss. She's put the incident behind her and feels she has nothing to be ashamed of."

Actor Terence Stamp, who starred in original Superman films, dies aged 87
Veteran British actor Terence Stamp, who starred in the original Superman films, has died aged 87. The Academy Award-nominated actor, who played Kryptonian villain General Zod in Superman and Superman II, died on Sunday. Stamp, who starred as a transgender woman in 1994's The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, won a Bafta for his performance. Born in the East End of London in 1938, Stamp rose to acting fame in the 1960s after he won a drama school scholarship. The Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art scholarship led him to the stage, where he acted in repertory theatre and met Michael Caine, who was five years older than him. The pair lived together in a flat in Harley Street while they were both looking for their big break, but they parted ways and lost touch, Stamp previously told The Guardian. He made his film debut in Peter Ustinov's 1962 film adaptation of Herman Melville's Billy Budd and his portrayal of the title character brought an Oscar nomination. Known for his stylish clothes, Stamp famously dated actress Julie Christie, who he performed alongside in the 1967 film Far From The Madding Crowd and was also in a relationship with the model Jean Shrimpton. But, after missing out on the role of James Bond, he fell out of the limelight for a while. It was not until 1978 that he got his most famous role as General Zod and appeared in Superman's 1980 sequel as the same character. He began voice acting and writing books in the late '90s, but also continued acting in films, appearing alongside Tom Cruise in Valkyrie in 2008 and working on movies directed by Tim Burton. His film career spanning six decades ended with the 2021 psychological thriller Last Night In Soho. Stamp's death was confirmed in a death notice published online, the Associated Press said.

Alan Titchmarsh says he 'has to leave the room' as he recalls poignant family memory
Former Gardeners' World presenter Alan Titchmarsh has shared a painful admission about separation as he opened up about his family in a brutally honest confession TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh has confessed that "it's pathetic" whilst delivering a poignant update regarding the distance he experiences from his two adult daughters. In an emotional disclosure made earlier this year, the cherished former Gardeners' World presenter shared a family revelation concerning a memorable quote from a beloved children's movie, which allegedly triggers a deeply moving reaction within him. Alan, who shares two grown-up daughters, Polly and Camilla, with wife Alison, explained how the "Daddy, my daddy" quote from The Railway Children resonates profoundly with the TV gardener. His comments indicated that the movie brings forth memories of his children, and in a tender acknowledgement, he admitted that he must actually "leave the room" whenever they screen the legendary film. The Ground Force icon severely criticised his own response to the movie as "pathetic" before outlining his present family circumstances, reports Wales Online. Nevertheless, one element has clearly remained constant since the gardener's daughters' younger years. Alan revealed to the Times: "It's pathetic, really. I'm a grown man and I have to leave the room if my girls put The Railway Children on. "They've got their own houses now, their own husbands, their own children - the oldest is 13 and the youngest is 9. But their rooms are still here and they've still got their names on the door." In separate developments, Alan had previously revealed the "heartbreaking" question that he received from his daughter when he kissed her goodnight. It emerged during his appearance on James O'Brien's Full Disclosure podcast in 2023, where he revealed that his career previously demanded lengthy periods away from the family home. He explained: "I would go away on a Sunday evening and come back later in the weekend. I do remember the heartbreaking thing of kissing one of them goodnight and them saying 'will you be here in the morning?'" Alan, whose extensive broadcasting career has spanned programmes including Gardeners' World and Songs of Praise, has been wed to his spouse for five decades, having initially encountered her during their twenties at an amateur dramatics society. Previously discussing his partnership, Alan maintained that romance centres on being "thoughtful", disclosing that he'd prepared Alison tea for an incredible 45 years. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that, reciprocally, his wife has pressed his shirts "every week for 44 years", something he characterised as the "greater gift". He remarked that he's "lucky" owing to her being the "most unmaterialistic" individual he knows. According to Hello!, the broadcaster has called the retired medic his "best friend", and they currently divide their time between their Hampshire farmhouse or getaway residence on the Isle of Wight. Polly represents the pair's eldest daughter, born in 1980, whilst Camilla arrived in 1982. Grandfather Alan disclosed to The Mirror in 2020 that they resided nearby but were unable to visit them for months owing to lockdown restrictions at the time. Alan stars in Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on ITV today (Sunday, August 17), from 9.30am to 11.30am.
