Pan Africanist artist Simphiwe Dana will enthrall crowds with her 'magic' at the Baxter
Simphiwe Dana at the Playhouse Image: Hugh Mdlalose IF THE Durban leg of her delightful concert over a week ago is anything to go by, loyal fans of music sensation Simphiwe Dana are in for a magical time at the Baxter this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Dana is in Cape Town to round up her three-city 20th anniversary as a professional musician, her debut album, Zandisile took South Africa by storm in 2004 and gave us some of the most loved and enduring songs ever to come from this land recently. From the time the lights hit the expansive stage of the Opera, the 1224-seater at the Playhouse, Dana made a grand entrance with her anthemic Nkwenkwezi. As fans whistled, ululated, and went absolutely crazy, it was evident the Pan Africanist diva and her forces were in for epic vocal and spiritual libations of joyous music and dazzling lights. Despite a disappointingly average turnout, Dana and her 24-member band led by Tshepo Tsotetsi stuck to the mandate and turned the night into an unforgettable and intimate celebration I would not have wanted to miss for the world. Special guests, Clermont township choir, Red Light Choir added a perfect choral flavour to the evening. 'I am here to thank the people for supporting me all these years,' she said a few hours before the show. The chatty award-winning composer and band leader was determined to let her audience feel her appreciation, a theme she kept going till her final song for the night. 'Sanibonani bantu baKwaZulu!' From her greetings as her band was warming up, and throughout the show, her rapport with her audience was unbreakable. The thunderous response to her question whether anyone of Mpondo and Thembu ancestry was in the house or not was yet another show of her deep love for her cultural roots and their socio-philosophical anchorage. Gifted not just with a golden and versatile voice, Dana draws from a rich traditional South African blues, jazz and Southern African choral source whose Pan Africanist timbre and textures continue to attain depth and harmony of voice. Watching her and hearing her sing can take one to the old rural Transkei hinterlands where girls not only listened to the music of the elders, but also were adept at playing instruments such as umrhubhe-mouth bow. Although unlike her predecessors among them Nofinishi Dywili, Mantombi Matotiyana and Madosini, she does not play umrhubhe, at times her blues vocal style gestures to the echoes of their revered multivocal overtone singing style known as umngqokolo. Inasmuch as she has had a wide range of musical influences including jazz, reggae, hip-hop, gospel, Afro soul and maskandi over the years, as a politically and culturally conscious artist, Dana refuses to imprison her spirited repertoire to narrow prisms of fixed time, space and breadth. Neither does she feel comfortable being compared to her role models among them, iconic Sophiatown divas such as Miriam Makeba, Dorothy Masuku, Sophie Mgcina and Thandi Klaasen, insisting what they accomplished under harsh conditions is simply unrepeatable. Since she came into the scene in 2004 with her album, Zandisile, Dana has been searching for healing, affirming her life and the lives of people who are special to her. In Tribute to maMjoli, she remembers her beloved and stunningly beautiful late mother, Noziphumo maMjoli Dana who died of a Covid-19-related illness in 2021.

Why Nonku Williams' relationship revelations deserve a therapist, not the spotlight of 'Untied'
Nonku Williams was the first guest on 'Untied', hosted by Relebogile Mabotja. It recently introduced 'Untied' , a talk show helmed by Relebogile Mabotja, who sits down with high-profile women unpacking their messy divorces. Yes, it is giving 'Unfollowed' vibes. No, this isn't a plug for the streaming platform but about its compelling content rather. When it comes to having a finger on the pulse of what South African viewers want to see, Showmax is leading the way. But who doesn't enjoy a good tea spilling session, especially when it's with the likes of Beverly Steyn, actresses Dawn Thandeka King, Mona Monyane and Palesa Madisakwane, media personality Zandi Nhlapo and model-turned-activist Sonia Booth. Of course, thanks to a last-minute court interdict, there is still a question mark over whether the interview with businesswoman Norma Gigaba will air. That said, 'The Real Housewives of Durban' star Nonku Williams was the first to unpack her tumultuous love life with Mabotja. While I understand that being in the spotlight means you are held to a higher standard by society, I don't believe everyone's life should be an open book. But Williams decided to unpack her struggles with finding love, and fans were curious, especially about RD, whom she introduced on the reality show. Her need for acceptance and being loved appears to stem from a troubled childhood where she witnessed her mother being abused by her father. The businesswoman and single mother of three reflected on her desperate need to get married at 21. She didn't have a ridiculous list either: a man with two legs would do. She said it, not me. Madly in love, she moved in with her first boyfriend. But her intense jealousy soon led to violent outbursts, quickly eroding their initial bliss. When the relationship tanked, she moved on with gospel singer Sfiso Ncwane, who is late. However, while she was six months pregnant with their daughter Nothile, he walked out on her and got married.

Mollwane Madiba's matric dance dreams dashed: Tyla won't be attending!
Mollwane Madiba's creative pursuit to invite Grammy-winning singer Tyla to his matric dance has culminated in an unforeseen development: he will now celebrate the event without his dream date. Image: Instagram. It is going to be a Tyla-less matric dance for Mollwane Madiba. Madiba, son of Princess Tirelo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, is set for his much-anticipated matric dance today, June 27. However, his dream date, Grammy Award-winning singer Tyla, will unfortunately not be present. It has been months of endless creativity and determination, despite his creative efforts to woo her, including multiple viral TikTok challenges and support from 5FM, Tyla's absence is now a reality. Madiba's journey began in January when he and his friends took to TikTok to help the student ask Tyla to be his matric dance date. Showcasing his school spirit and dedication to the singer, he gathered his schoolmates to create a visually stunning TikTok video, showcasing their school spirit, support for Mollwane, and his devotion to the 'Push 2 Start' hitmaker. The first video, which was the most popular, featured students asking, 'Who do you think Mollwane is taking to MD?' followed by all of them answering 'Tyla, obviously' since it's well known that Madiba is one of Tyla's biggest fans. His videos garnered significant attention, with over 200 000 likes and 3 000 comments, as fans and fellow students rallied behind him. To assist him, 5FM's Jodell Tantji jumped on board and went on a mission with his co-hosts to help Madiba get the 23-year-old global star to be his matric dance date. A lot transpired, and necessary people were contacted. Tantji contacted Tyla's manager and her brother, Tyrese Seethal, but these efforts were met with a dead end. In a recent TikTok video, Madiba informed everyone who supported his quest that Tyla would not be attending as his date and thanked them for rallying behind him since the inception of his idea. 'Unfortunately, Tyla cannot make it, but I'd like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all the support and all the videos. It's been six months, and we have been pushing since the 18th of January when my friends made that post,' said Madiba. He adds that the journey has been interesting and fun, and that he will still have fun with his friends despite Tyla not being present at his matric dance. Many supporters, including Madiba, were hopeful that she would attend, but given her global superstar status, it is understandable that her schedule just wouldn't allow for it. However, Madiba's creative campaign has definitely made him a star. His dedication and passion for the singer have made a lot of people proud, and his name is now synonymous with determination and creativity.
