Stokes blasts century but India still frustrate England

Perth Now2 days ago
Ben Stokes hit another century. Chris Woakes was in sight of a hat-trick before he'd even completed the first over of India's second innings. The fourth day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford certainly started with a bang.
So much so that by lunch, and with the visitors 2-1 and 310 runs behind, there seemed the genuine possibility that England could claim a series-clinching victory on Saturday without the need of going to the final day.
But given the way this thrilling and feisty series has gone, India were never likely to go down without a fight.
The odds are still stacked against the visitors holding out for a draw in Manchester.
But through the stubborn stand of KL Rahul (87 not out) and Shubman Gill (78 not out), they were given hope of salvaging something from the Test and the five-match series as a whole, which England lead 2-1.
India ended the day on 2-174 and trailing by 137 after frustrating the hosts, and with some rain forecast for Sunday, England may run out of time to seal a win that looked so likely earlier in the day.
Stokes scored his 14th Test century as England ran up a 311-run innings lead to seemingly put it in complete control.
A score of 141 continued his brilliant all-round performance after taking five wickets in India's first innings.
With his ton, the 34-year-old England captain became his country's fourth player to get five wickets and a century in a Test.
Having resumed on 7-544, England were determined to pile the pressure on India, reaching 669 all out.
Stokes's spectacular batting enthralled the crowd as he scored his first Test century in two years with the help of three sixes.
He was eventually caught by Sai Sudharsan off Ravindra Jadeja, who finished the innings with four wickets.
The end of the morning session could hardly have gone worse for India.
Yashasvi Jaiswal went for a duck after just four balls, caught by Joe Root off Woakes. And Woakes immediately struck again, to give himself a chance of a hat-trick, when Sudharsan went for a golden duck, caught by Harry Brook.
At 1-2 at lunch, it looked like being a painful rest of the day for India, but through Rahul and Gill they rallied to 2-86 at tea. A resilient second session included a fourth 50 of the series for Gill.
India grew in confidence as the partnership of the two leading run-scorers in the series looked immovable through the evening session, with Rahul emulating Gill by also reaching a fourth 50 of the series.

England's Hannah Hampton pays tribute to late grandfather after Euro 2025 win over Spain

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton — who played a key role in her team's Euro 2025 final win over Spain — has revealed the heartbreak of losing her grandfather. Hampton was named player of the match after making two saves in England's 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory in Basel on Monday morning AEST. It was a performance that capped a brilliant Women's European Championship campaign from the 24-year-old. Posting on Instagram alongside a picture of her green England goalkeeper shirt with "grandpa" printed in the neckline, Hampton paid tribute to her late grandfather. "You were one of my biggest supporters," Hampton wrote. "You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there — watching, encouraging, teaching. "You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way." Hampton added: "I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute." The England team returned home to a heroes' welcome on Monday following its triumph over the World Cup winners. Government ministers hosted a reception to mark a victory hailed as an inspiration for young people across the nation. Striker Chloe Kelly fired in the decisive spot-kick as England successfully defended the title it won on home soil three years ago. In a video shared on social media on Monday, players were seen arriving at their post-match party, celebrating with a glass of wine as cheers erupted around them. "I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English," Kelly said. England captain Leah Williamson said she was in total disbelief. "Playing for this England team is unbelievable," Williamson said. "You cannot put us down." AP/Reuters

Joe Lacey steals show as Sydney FC defeats Wrexham

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac may not have been in attendance on Tuesday night, but 40,242 punters got a glimpse of a future star, as teenager Joe Lacey stole the show in the Sky Blues' 2-1 over AFC Wrexham. Lacey, 18, stunned everybody in attendance when he scored the decisive goal after curling a low shot past Wrexham keeper Callum Burton in the 74th minute of play. 'To be fair, I don't even think I really saw it,' Lacey said of his goal against the Welsh glamour club. 'I just put my hands into the air as soon as I heard the crowd. 'I've been at the club a long time and had a lot of my mates on the pitch alongside me. 'I'm very grateful for the opportunity... yeah, I'm just buzzing.' Sure, it was a pre-season friendly, but with the visitors competing in the English second tier this upcoming season, and Sydney playing the final half hour with an outfield composed entirely of academy players, the result really felt like a serious boilover. Oh, and did we mention the Sky Blues' marquee man, Douglas Costa, didn't even play? Initially, things looked to be going to script for visitors, who scored after 18 minutes when Sydney midfielder Corey Hollman helped James McClean's free kick into the home side's net. However, Alexandar Popovic struck a blow for the locals when he buried a Jordan Courtney Perkins header that had initially been parried by Danny Ward just before the break. The goal came just moments after Sydney FC was denied what appeared to be a certain penalty after a Hollman shot made contact with Lewis Brunt's arm in the 18-yard box. Probably the most surreal moment of the match occurred in the 60th minute, when both teams simultaneously made a combined 19 substitutions (10 by Wrexham and nine by Sydney). This would prove crucial, as Lacey and his merry band of youngsters out 'fairytaled' British football's fairy tale team. Rather appropriately, the winning goal was an absolute showstopper, which started deep in Sydney FC territory. Matthew Scarcella got the move started when he made a long pass to teammate Akel Akon. Thinking quickly, Akon squared the ball to Lacey, who struck it perfectly from just outside the box. Ironically, Lacey has Welsh heritage and has family living in the country. 'Before the game, I didn't know how much pull they [Wrexham] had in Australia,' he said. 'I knew they had a documentary and I've got family in Wales and they've told me about it.' Wrexham will now travel to Wellington to take on the Phoenix on Saturday, while Sydney turns its attention to its Australia Cup opener against Western United on 29 July. Football England have secured back-to-back Women's Euro titles after edging Spain in a penalty shootout thriller, with veteran defender Lucy Bronze going to extraordinary lengths all tournament. Euro 2025: England beat Spain as Bronze reveals broken leg

England coach Sarina Wiegman said she was proud of her team after they won a penalty shootout against Spain to secure 'incredible' back-to-back Women's Euro titles on Sunday. Defending champions England made an inauspicious start to Euro 2025 in Switzerland when they lost to France, but they went on to retain the trophy by overcoming Spain, who had beaten them in the 2023 World Cup final. 'I just can't believe it. I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy,' Wiegman told BBC One TV. 'It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch — all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponent. 'From the first game it was chaos. Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible. 'Football is chaos.' England won the penalty shootout 3-1 after the match in Basel finished 1-1 following extra time, with Chloe Kelly converting the decisive kick. 'We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible,' Wiegman said. The Dutch coach also praised Lucy Bronze after the veteran full-back revealed in a post-game interview that she had played with a fractured tibia during the competition. 'She had some issues with her tibia and of course we tried to manage that,' Wiegman said of Bronze, who was substituted midway through extra time in the final and could hardly walk as she came to collect her medal with a heavily strapped right leg. 'Lucy Bronze, her mentality is incredible. The whole team has an incredible mentality, it's unbelievable.' Meanwhile, England captain Leah Williamson said she had a feeling her team was going to win. '(I feel) total disbelief — but at the same time, I knew it was going to happen. There's always a moment when I think, right girls, let's turn it on,' said Williamson, whose penalty during the shoot-out was saved. 'The way we defended as a team, nothing came through us. It felt like it was going to be our day. 'Relentless, we have players who absolutely love it. It's just unbelievable to do it again. And after that first game, no-one thought we would — and fair enough! But nothing has changed.' Spain coach Montse Tome insisted that her team did not deserve to lose Sunday's Euro 2025 final after the World Cup holders were agonisingly beaten 3-1 on penalties by England. 'I think this team deserved more. We worked so hard for a long time to get here, to the final against a top-level side in England, and I thought the team deserved more, or at least to not be left with the feeling we have now,' Tome told reporters after the match at St Jakob-Park in Basel. The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Alessia Russo heading England level just before the hour mark following Mariona Caldentey's 25th-minute opener for Spain. With no further scoring in extra time, it went to a shoot-out in which three Spain players including Aitana Bonmati all failed to score before Chloe Kelly netted the winning kick for England. 'This is sport and in sport you need to accept defeat, which is what happened to us in the penalty shoot-out,' added Tome, who took over from Jorge Vilda as coach shortly after Spain beat England in the final of the 2023 World Cup. 'I thought we played well in the first half, then in the second half their equaliser maybe left us a bit downbeat. 'After that we dominated possession in extra time but couldn't get the win.' Spain, appearing in their first ever European Championship final, enjoyed 60 percent of the possession overall and had 24 attempts on goal to England's 10. But they paid the price for not putting the game to bed. 'I thought we were the better team but in football it is not always the best team which wins,' Tome added. 'England are a great side and have been so competitive throughout the tournament. 'They got the equaliser and then defended to try to get to penalties, and in the shoot-out we chose the penalty-takers who we thought would be most effective.' Patri Guijarro scored Spain's first penalty but then Caldentey and Bonmati both had their attempts saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, and Salma Paralluelo put her effort wide before Kelly won it. 'They all said they were confident and I had confidence in them. In the end anyone can score or miss a penalty but the players gave everything,' the coach said
