City relives horror of 1988 IA crash
Ahmedabad: Memories from the past on Thursday returned to haunt Amdavadis. Thirty-seven years ago, on Oct 19, 1988, Ahmedabad had witnessed a similar air tragedy when Indian Airlines Flight 113 crashed near the airport, killing 133 out of the 135 people on board, including six crew members and pilots. The flight to Ahmedabad had taken off from Mumbai airport early that morning. The crash's two survivors were a young businessman, Ashok Agrawal, and then Gujarat Vidyapith vice-chancellor, Vinod Tripathi. The flight crashed in the Kotarpur area, 2.5km from the approach end of the airstrip. This spot is on the other end of the strip where the London-bound Air India flight crashed in a high-nose angle on Thursday, moments after take-off. Investigations into the 1988 crash later revealed that the pilots did not adhere to procedure under poor visibility conditions. Airport authorities were also held liable for not informing the aircraft about the prevailing poor visibility conditions. The Indian Airlines aircraft was a Boeing 737-2A8, registered VT-EAH, delivered to the airline in Dec 1970 and had accumulated 42,831 hours and 47,647 landings till the day of the tragedy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A year after the crash, Indian Airlines offered to pay Rs 2 lakh as full and final settlement to relatives of each of the victims, the maximum amount allowed under Rules 17 and 22 of the Second Schedule to the Carriage by Air Act 1972. However, the victims' kin sued the airlines and airport authorities. A city civil court enhanced the compensation amount to a total of Rs 6 crore, with the liability divided between the airlines and airport authorities in the ratio of 70:30. Survivor Ashok Agrawal was ordered to be paid Rs 60 lakh compensation with 6% interest. Airport authorities appealed in the Gujarat high court, which reduced the compensation amount to Rs 45 lakh in 2009. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . 85 if not 100: e-bus plan in limbo, UT ready to settle for less
1 2 Chandigarh: Facing the imminent phasing out of 100 diesel buses and struggling to get 100 e-buses as their replacements for more than a year, the Chandigarh administration will now send a fresh proposal for procuring 85 new e-buses to the central govt. A UT official said the Transport Department would again prepare a detailed proposal and submit it to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Recently, the officers of the Transport Department also went to Delhi and held a meeting regarding the purchase of buses. "Under the current circumstances, the administration will float fresh tenders on its own. The terms and conditions will be the same as those set by the central govt. The tender will be floated after approval from the competent authority. From the start of the tendering process to the delivery of buses, it will take at least six months," said a UT official. The urgency for procuring the buses stems from the fact that out of the 358 diesel buses, 100 will complete their 15-year service limit by November this year, and these will have to be phased out. The CTU is the mainstay of the public transport system in the tricity, with Mohali having no tricity bus service available and Panchkula having a very limited local bus service. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Clean Warehouses = Safe Workplaces SearchMore Learn More Undo If these 100 buses are taken off the road, there would be a consequent reduction in bus services within the tricity. The process to replace these 100 diesel buses with e-buses started a couple of years ago. "The buses were being purchased under a central govt scheme, and even the tendering process was completed last year. But since then, litigation plagued the execution of the tender. Even if the tender materialises now, we are still unlikely to get the 100 buses before November," said the official. The new 100 e-buses were to be ultra-low entry (ULE) vehicles of 12m length. The existing e-buses with CTU are 9m long and of low entry. The 100 buses were being availed under the 'PM e-Bus Sewa' scheme. Earlier, e-buses were availed under phase II of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) India Scheme of the central govt. In the tendering process for the new e-buses, which concluded in March 2024, the lowest bid was Rs 61.8 per km. GDA starts widening 3km RNE stretch to unclog housing hub
Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has started revamp work on a 2.7km stretch in Raj Nagar Extension. The township, developed in the early 2000s, has grown exponentially in-terms of population over the last couple decades, but the infrastructure has come under strain. The road connects Delhi-Meerut Road through GT Road via Hindon Elevated Road. Under this project, the stretch will be widened to 24m from its current width of 6m. "This will give much-needed relief to end congestion in the township. The total station survey was conducted by GDA's land acquisition and engineering department, who estimated the cost of construction to be Rs 31 crore. Land will also be acquired, which the development authority will directly acquire from owners at a mutually agreed rate," said GDA official Rudresh Shukla. Vehicles travelling from Delhi and Noida that enter Ghaziabad through Muradnagar and Modinagar travel through the stretch to reach the Hindon civil terminal and the elevated road. "The stretch, once developed, will also be connected to the outer ring road, which on one side will connect the proposed Harnandipuram township and the Hindon elevated road on the other side," Shukla said. Last month, GDA set in motion another plan to connect RNE with Noornagar in two phases. In the first phase, a 750m long and 18m wide stretch will be constructed while the second phase involves the construction of a 350m long and 24m wide stretch. The second stretch will be abutting the embankment along the Hindon river. As per estimates, Rs 32 crore will be spent on acquiring land from the farmers, and an additional Rs 10 crore will be needed for the construction of the road. Additionally, as part of measures to decongest the RNE roundabout, the UP Bridge Corporation had constructed a flyover in the area in 2019. The 586m long and 11m wide flyover provided some respite to commuters, but since 2019, the population influx necessitated the need for a bypass. Officials have said that the 6km bypass set to come up here will become operational in six months' time. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
