The National22-04-2025

Saudi Arabia is getting its own version of Downtown Design. The inaugural Downtown Design Riyadh will take place at the Jax District from May 20 to 23. It is being held in partnership with Saudi Arabia's Architecture and Design Commission of the Ministry of Culture. Much like its parent counterpart in Dubai, Downtown Design Riyadh will feature innovative works by designers from across the world. It will also have a special dedication to local designers. 'Saudi Arabia's design sector is witnessing significant and accelerated growth and we are committed to supporting this progress by showcasing local creative excellence and attracting leading international design exhibitions,' says Sumayah Al-Solaiman, chief executive of the Architecture and Design Commission. "One of our key objectives is to position the Kingdom as a global destination for design by welcoming world-class exhibitions and fostering cross-cultural exchange. Downtown Design Riyadh, with its thoughtfully curated programme and blend of local and global expertise, reflects our vision to build a dynamic design community that embodies the Kingdom's rich and diverse cultural identity.' Highlights include a sweeping exhibition by Huda Lighting that includes well-known brands from the lighting industry, including Articolo, Brokis and Tom Dixon. The Bowery Company will highlight modern Scandinavian designs by Audo Copenhagen, &Tradition and Gubi. Scarlet Splendour will present pure brass pieces by Richard Hutten in their regional debut. Some works, meanwhile, will present interesting mergers between digital technology and craftsmanship, such as a collaboration between Maison Louis Drucker, a company known for their rattan chairs, and studios Trame and Aranda/Lasch. There will also be a dedicated focus on home-grown designs. Teeb Made will exhibit designs that are rooted in Saudi culture, whereas Designed in Saudi will showcase a diverse collection of pioneering designs. International galleries and designers will also present limited-edition works and collectibles in a special section of Downtown Design Riyadh. Gallery Collectional, meanwhile, will present works by renowned designers including Christophe Delcourt, who is famous for using natural materials in his minimalist designs; Apparatus Studio, known for their sculptural lights; and Draga & Aurel, a studio named after its founders Draga Obradovic and Aurel K Basedow, who are known for their experimental takes. Other highlights include a collaborative series of works by Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder and Indian artisan Jeevaram Suthar. Venetian glassmakers Venini will present glassworks produced in collaboration with Italian designer Michele De Lucchi and US architect Peter Marino. There will be other aspects of Downtown Design Riyadh. These include food pop-ups and cultural exhibits, such as a modular, outdoor installation that is handcrafted from Saudi sand. It will be presented by the UAE studio Karim+Elias, which is headed by Karim Tamerji and Elias El Hage. 'Our first edition of Downtown Design Riyadh will present a selection of some of the most innovative and sought-after names of the international design scene, alongside emerging designers, and creatives from around the Middle East,' says Mette Degn-Christensen, director of Downtown Design. 'Our dynamic programme will offer guests a journey of discovery and an unparalleled experience of a highly curated line-up, from global design brands and limited-edition works to bespoke installations and creative concepts. With the rapid expansion of Saudi Arabia's design market, we are seeing increasing interest from across the world. Downtown Design Riyadh will create a new annual meeting point, in one immersive setting.'

Oasis Afloat: Four Seasons Yachts Launches Marina Day, Redefining Luxury Living on the Water

In anticipation of setting sail in 2026, Four Seasons l, the first in the Four Seasons Yachts collection, unveils exciting new details about the vessel's standout marina experience and seaside programming. The innovative transverse marina – which opens across both sides of the yacht – will place guests directly at sea level for unparalleled access to the water's edge. The transverse marina introduces a revolutionary concept in maritime architecture. Featuring two retractable platforms – one portside and one starboard side – along with a spacious interior bar and lounge area, the marina spans the yacht, yielding up to 676 square metres (7,275 square feet) of total space on dedicated marina days, offerings options for watersports, wellness, activities, relaxation, dining and more. These offerings create experiences that encapsulate the spirit of bespoke yachting adventures for all guests. Programming will take place on dedicated Marina Days throughout most itineraries, highlighting picturesque locations from Mayreau island and Soufrière Bay in the Caribbean to the Gulf of Squillace and Monte Argentario in the Mediterranean. These days prioritize secluded spots to allow for exploration of peaceful and remote waters. Groundbreaking Design and Riviera-Inspired Interiors Departing from traditional aft-positioned design, the innovative transverse marina provides enhanced sea access, versatility and improved stability. This flexible space, spanning two decks, accommodates up to 105 guests across its combined indoor and outdoor spaces, which include a lounge, bar, and an extendable deck with a sea pool and lounge chairs. Yielding up to an extra 351 square metres (3,778 square feet) and boasting direct access to the water, the extendable watersports dock offers ample opportunities for continued exploration and discovery at sea. Tillberg Design of Sweden, renowned for their Scandinavian aesthetics and specialized yacht concepts, crafted the marina's interior to match the sophistication of the yacht's residential-style suites. 'Our design focuses on creating a seamless connection with the sea, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality,' says Fredrik Johansson, Partner and Executive Director of Tillberg Design of Sweden. 'Inspired by the dining terraces in the South of France, we aimed to bring that atmosphere of casual elegance aboard the yacht.' Curated Marina Offerings from Sunrise to Sunset On designated Marina Days when the yacht is not sailing, featured on most Mediterranean and Caribbean voyages, the Four Seasons I marina transforms into an aquatic playground, offering guests a unique perspective from sea level. As dawn breaks, early risers can invigorate their senses with on-deck yoga followed by post-workout smoothies and guided meditation sessions. As the day unfolds, the marina evolves into a vibrant social hub with guests enjoying a selection of expertly crafted beverages that can be sipped while taking in panoramic views of postcard-perfect coves and ports. Fitness enthusiasts can partake in water-based exercises with electric hydrofoils and water bikes, while those preferring a more leisurely pace can opt for traditional kayaks or inflatable waterboards. Scenic coastal explorations are made possible with pedalboards, allowing guests to navigate picturesque shorelines at their own pace. Guests wishing to enjoy the water closer to 'home' will appreciate the fully protected sea water dipping pool located within the yacht's floating platform. 'Guests will explore remarkable destinations, beautiful bays and hidden coves while enjoying adventures on kayaks, paddleboards, and superyacht water toys that let them glide effortlessly across the water,' explains Tim Littley, Vice President of Itinerary and Planning at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD, Joint Owner/Operator of Four Seasons Yachts. 'These marina days will add a new element of discovery and fun, and we look forward to introducing our guests to this one-of-a-kind experience.'
