Yayasan Sabah Group welcomes students to apply

Kota Kinabalu: Yayasan Sabah Group is offering eligible students the opportunity to apply for scholarships, bursaries and student loans for the 2025 academic session. This initiative aims to provide financial support to students from Sabah who wish to continue their education at the Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Master's, and PhD levels. 'With the implementation of this sponsorship, we hope to open more educational opportunities for talented children of Sabah. We prioritise those from our State to see more Sabahans succeed in the academic and professional fields,' Director of Yayasan Sabah, Dato' Sri Haji Gulamhaidar Khan Bahadar, said. The types of sponsorship offered include the Sabah State Scholarship Award of Excellence (BCNS) for outstanding SPM 2024 students, scholarships for Higher Education at local public and private universities (IPTA/IPTS) in fields such as Agriculture, Architecture, Quantity Survey, Entrepreneurship, Dentistry and Islamic Studies as well as scholarships for overseas studies in countries like Indonesia, Egypt, and Russia. Student loans are also available for students who do not meet the criteria for scholarships or grants. Gulamhaidar added that they encourage eligible students to take advantage of this opportunity to further their studies as education is the key to success. 'The programme is a manifestation of the Yayasan Sabah Group's commitment to the higher education needs of Sabah's children. It helps ease the financial burden on parents and provides opportunities for students to pursue their education without barriers,' he remarked. 'We hope with initiatives like these, more students from Sabah will be able to realise their academic potential and, in turn, contribute back to the development of the State.' Applicants can apply online through the Sabah Education Sponsorship Portal (PTPS) at https://ptps.sabah.gov.my. The application deadline is 30 June 2025. All completed applications must be returned to the Education Development Division, Yayasan Sabah Group, Level 5, Menara Tun Mustapha, Likas Bay, Kota Kinabalu. Pepper prices on continuous uptrend this year
TAWAU: The local pepper industry recorded continuous price increases in the first seven months of this year, said Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin. He said the average price for black pepper has increased by 51 per cent to RM27,240 per tonne compared to RM18,066 per tonne last year. "Meanwhile, the average price for white pepper also increased by 43 per cent to RM37,407 per tonne compared to RM26,164 per tonne last year. "This encouraging pepper price trend is expected to persist until the third quarter of this year following the recent strengthening of the ringgit," he said when officiating at a pepper cultivation promotion programme here today. He said the pepper commodity is an economic resource generator for 39,449 pepper farmers in Malaysia who cultivate about 8,293 hectares of pepper. "The total includes 248 farmers in Sabah who cultivate 41 hectares of pepper plantation. I encourage more Sabahans to take the opportunity to get involved in pepper cultivation to increase their income. "I am of the view that the development of pepper cultivation in Sabah can be implemented by taking into account the advantages of the terrain and hilly topography suitable for pepper cultivation," he said. Chan said the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities together with the Malaysian Pepper Board are committed and actively working to guide pepper cultivation entrepreneurs in this country, including through outreach programmes such as in-situ training and today's programme.

Kota Kinabalu: Addressing Sabah's high rate of non-revenue water (NRW) requires a shift in focus from costly and time-consuming pipe replacement to the adoption of advanced technological solutions, said Deputy Chief Minister III cum Minister of Works, Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya. Delivering the closing keynote address at the Asiawater Versi Sabah 2025 conference at SICC on Thursday, Shahelmey acknowledged the scale of the state's water woes, with over 50pc of treated water lost before reaching consumers primarily due to aging pipes, faulty meters, and illegal connections. Advertisement However, he cautioned against relying solely on large-scale infrastructure replacement, calling instead for a smarter and more sustainable strategy. 'We must strike a balance. Pipe replacement is necessary, but we must also embrace technologies that can reduce losses more quickly and affordably, such as pressure management systems and smart leakage detection tools,' he said. Using Pengurusan Air Selangor's success as an example, Shahelmey noted how the utility brought its NRW down from 32 per cent in 2019 to 27 per cent in 2024, despite managing over 6,000 kilometres of old asbestos cement pipes. 'This was achieved not just by replacing pipes, but by applying technology intelligently,' he added. Advertisement Sabah's water infrastructure challenges are compounded by years of underinvestment, poor maintenance, and geographical hurdles. The Minister emphasised that a sustainable solution must involve an integrated, long-term approach that includes planning new water sources, investing in talent, improving billing systems, and creating a strong network of competent contractors, consultants and plumbers. He also underlined the importance of public awareness and stakeholder cooperation in protecting raw water sources. 'Our rivers are under threat from pollution, which drives up treatment costs and risks temporary shutdowns. Clean rivers require collective responsibility,' he warned. Shahelmey further stressed the need for the water supply sector to adapt to climate change, which is expected to bring more extreme and unpredictable weather events that could cause both droughts and flooding. 'Our planning can no longer be based on 50- or 100-year patterns. Climate resilience must be built into every level of water management,' he said. Shahelmey reaffirmed the State Government's commitment to delivering clean and reliable water to all Sabahans. 'Clean water is a basic human right and a foundation for economic growth. Sabah must build not just pipes, but a water ecosystem fit for the future and technology is central to that vision. 'We must be open to new approaches. Group calls for Sabah's SMEs to register with SSM for greater growth potential
KOTA KINABALU: There is a need to align Sabah's small business registration framework with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) to unlock access to federal funding, boost business credibility, and ensure fair economic inclusion with Peninsular Malaysia. In making the call for this alignment, the Sabah Association of Professional Accountants (Sapa) President Datuk Tan Kok Liang said currently, many micro and small enterprises in Sabah operate solely under municipal-issued trading or operating licences. This fragmented system puts local entrepreneurs at a structural disadvantage compared to businesses in the peninsula, which are formally registered under the Registrar of Businesses (ROB) governed by SSM, he said. 'There's a fundamental mismatch in legal and commercial recognition,' he said after a recent courtesy visit to Mohd Arif Bin Hamzah, Director of SSM Sabah. Tan said that while trading licences serve a local function, they do not carry the national-level weight and legal benefits that come with registration under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956 [Act 197]. 'This limits access to funding, market expansion, and overall growth potential,' he said. He said the SSM data revealed over 9.49 million businesses were registered in Peninsular Malaysia whereas in contrast, Sabah lacked official records under the same framework due to the absence of a mandatory registration requirement with SSM. SSM aligning Sabah's registration framework will improve access to federal grants and financing, enhanced business credibility and documentation, legal identity and name protection, and eligibility for procurement and tenders, Tan stressed. 'This is not about compromising Sabah's autonomy, it's about achieving equal opportunity,' he said. 'Sabahans are resourceful and resilient, but many businesses remain 'invisible' in the national ecosystem. That must change,' he added. Tan said Sapa proposes a dual-registration model, where SMEs comply with local regulations while also being supported to register with SSM. This transition could be made accessible through mobile registration units, digital onboarding platforms and waiver of registration fees, he said. 'We must move past jurisdictional silos and prioritise empowerment. Bridging this administrative gap is crucial to uplifting Sabah's SMEs,' he added.
