St Peter's AC Dromiskin athlete Dearbhla Allen makes final at first major international championships
Saint Peter's AC athlete Dearbhla Allen was on duty last weekend on the international stage when she took her place on the start line in the European U20 track and field championships in Tampere, Finland.
Although Dearbhla had previously represented Ireland on six occasions, this was her first experience at a major Championship.
Dearbhla's target for the championship was to make it through her heat and qualify for the final of her event the U20 Women's 3000m Steeplechase.
Her heat was on Friday morning and if her support team had any fears of nerves effecting her performance, they were soon put to bed as Dearbhla got a brilliant start and followed hot on the heals of the lead athlete to stay in second position for most of the race.
In the closing stages some athletes passed her out but she dug deep to qualify for the final. The final surprisingly was the following day which was a short turnaround but Dearbhla took her place on the start line and again showed tremendous bravery and put herself right in the mix.
As the last few laps came the pace increased in the baking sunshine and this tremendously brave athlete hung on as best she could up against the very best in Europe. Dearbhla managed to finish eleventh in the final following her sixth place finish in the heat.
All in all, she lcan ook back on her debut major international championship with pride as she went toe-to-toe with the best in Europe and didn't look out of place.
Dearbhla can look back on her track and field season with a huge sense of accomplishment winning three national titles and making the European U20 final, a fantastic season and at an age group that she is eligible again for in 2026.

Temperatures will still hover around the 20-degree mark however on a balmy evening. In Istanbul, St Pat's can expect warm conditions, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s at kick-off. Hoops have work to do It's a big night in Tallaght as Shamrock Rovers aim to keep their European ambitions alive. The SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division leaders were not at their best in last week's first leg, falling to a 1-0 loss thanks to Sunday Adetunji's second-half effort, but they're far from out of this. A boisterous home crowd will look to get their team over the line and set up a play-off against either Larne or Portuguese side Santa Clara, who lead 3-0 after the first leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds. Boss Stephen Bradley knows what Adetunji is capable of. The Hoops will need to improve on their first-leg showing, but they certainly have the tools to get the job done here. Team news: Graham Burke is back from injury in a big boost for the hosts, but the omission of Jack Byrne from the squad has raised eyebrows. Byrne is not injured, with speculation mounting there's a rift between the player and management. Aaron McEneff is also unavailable. "It's one of those where you have to gee the players up to go and enjoy the experience," said ex-Dundalk striker David McMillan on this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast. "I've played in Ukraine, I've played in Belarus, the atmosphere can be - in Turkey in particular - absolutely incredible. Those games are some of the best experiences players will have. "It's disappointing for Pat's that they go there really for damage limitation... but as a player you just have to enjoy the experience. As a League of Ireland player, you don't get to play that type of opposition all that often." Besiktas had no league game at the weekend so will be ominously fresh. Meanwhile Kenny will have one eye on Sunday evening's massive FAI Cup last-16 clash against Shelbourne in Inchicore. He has a number of injury concerns and will have to utilise his squad. Boost for Shelbourne as Uefa approve Tolka Park for Conference League play-off
SHELBOURNE HAVE RECEIVED a huge boost ahead of their Uefa Conference League play-off after it was confirmed that the home leg will be played at Tolka Park. It's understood that upgrades made to the stadium as well as the operational aspects of how the League of Ireland champions have managed their European games so far have been enough to convince Uefa delegates to grant a licence for the Drumcondra venue. Advertisement It had been anticipated that Shels would have to move the home leg of their Europa League third round qualifier with Rijeka last night to Tallaght Stadium in order to meet ground regulations and requirements from the governing body. However, Tolka also won the seal of approval for that tie and despite losing the game they did enough with how the event was run to keep such a crucial fixture on their own patch. St Patrick's Athletic, for example, had to move last week's Conference League home tie with Besiktas to the home of Shamrock Rovers and it has traditionally been the case for League of Ireland teams – other than the Hoops – who make it beyond the second round of Europe to move their home fixture. Shels are now due to play at Tolka next Thursday (21 August) against the winner of Linfield and Vikingur with the away leg on 28 August. The Irish League side trail 2-1 from the first leg and should David Healy's side produce a comeback it will be a repeat of the All-Ireland derby from the first round of this year's Champions League qualifiers earlier this summer.

"The fact that a lot of players have been playing football before then, a lot of players in a better place this time than potentially last year. "It's all really good and well for Ireland football. "It's exciting times. We've given ourselves a chance and that's all you can do before it kicks off." A common concern for the Republic of Ireland has been the level to which the senior squad are playing. To this end, this past summer has seen some progress, even if the number of Ireland players in the Premier League (12) is down on 2024/25. "The fact that we do have a lot now with a lot of players playing regularly and that's the main thing before we go into this campaign is always a positive. "It's nothing to worry about for the next few years." Heimir Hallgrimsson has been positive about Ireland's chances of getting to the 2026 World Cup. The Boys in Green have not been to the tournament since 2002, while they have not been to a major competition since Euro 2016. Collins shares that positivity and believes he and his gaffer are not being bullish in saying so. He said: "I wouldn't say bullish. I'd say that we all have a similar feeling that it is a good opportunity to get to a World Cup. "It's different for Heimir because his whole job is focused on Ireland. We have the Premier League or Championship to worry about. "When it comes to the round, we're all in a positive place and we're all excited. We all think we've given ourselves an opportunity."
