WEATHER
The sun was splitting the stones on Wednesday, but it'll be more overcast in Dublin ahead of Shamrock Rovers' tussle with Kosovan side Ballkani. Temperatures will still hover around the 20-degree mark however on a balmy evening.
In Istanbul, St Pat's can expect warm conditions, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s at kick-off.
Hoops have work to do
It's a big night in Tallaght as Shamrock Rovers aim to keep their European ambitions alive.
The SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division leaders were not at their best in last week's first leg, falling to a 1-0 loss thanks to Sunday Adetunji's second-half effort, but they're far from out of this.
A boisterous home crowd will look to get their team over the line and set up a play-off against either Larne or Portuguese side Santa Clara, who lead 3-0 after the first leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds.
Boss Stephen Bradley knows what Adetunji is capable of. The 27-year-old Nigerian played - and scored - against Rovers in the colours of North Macedonia's Shkupi when the clubs met in the Europa League qualifiers back in 2022.
Richie Towell was involved in that tie, which the Hoops won 5-2 on aggregate. He expects his old side to progress tonight but warned: "The thing is they have the boy Sunday Adetunji up front. We played against him when he played for Shkupi, a really good player.
"He's very similar to Tammy Abraham (tormentor of St Pat's last Thursday). He's that big, tall, gangly, physical presence, he can run in behind, he has a good touch, so he'll be a real target man for Ballkani."
Last year Larne beat Ballkani on penalties in the Conference League third qualifying round. Shamrock Rovers would later beat Larne 4-1 in Belfast after both clubs reached the league phase.
The Hoops will need to improve on their first-leg showing, but they certainly have the tools to get the job done here.
Team news: Graham Burke is back from injury in a big boost for the hosts, but the omission of Jack Byrne from the squad has raised eyebrows. Byrne is not injured, with speculation mounting there's a rift between the player and management. Aaron McEneff is also unavailable.
Player view - Ed McGinty (Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper): "They move the ball well, they move it at speed and they've got individual threats going forward. It's just about keeping the heads down. We don't really get too far ahead of ourselves. It's about working hard and trusting what we do on the ball."
Saints playing for pride in Turkey
St Pat's were blown away by a quality, ruthless first-half showing from Besiktas last week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men came to Dublin under pressure after being hammered by Shakhtar Donetsk 6-2 on aggregate in the Europa League second-round qualifiers.
However their big names turned on the style to crush any hopes of an upset, Tammy Abraham's hat-trick helping them to a 4-0 lead at the break.
The big plus for Stephen Kenny was his team's performance on the turnaround. Simon Power scored a super individual effort before Mason Melia spurned a golden opportunity to nick a second. They'll hope to avoid a morale-damaging hammering at Tupras Stadyumu before focusing fully on domestic duties.
"It's one of those where you have to gee the players up to go and enjoy the experience," said ex-Dundalk striker David McMillan on this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast.
"I've played in Ukraine, I've played in Belarus, the atmosphere can be - in Turkey in particular - absolutely incredible. Those games are some of the best experiences players will have.
"It's disappointing for Pat's that they go there really for damage limitation... but as a player you just have to enjoy the experience. As a League of Ireland player, you don't get to play that type of opposition all that often."
Besiktas had no league game at the weekend so will be ominously fresh. Meanwhile Kenny will have one eye on Sunday evening's massive FAI Cup last-16 clash against Shelbourne in Inchicore. He has a number of injury concerns and will have to utilise his squad.
Team news: The Saints are without Zack Elbouzedi (shoulder), Aidan Keena (thigh), Sean Hoare (calf), Anto Breslin (knee), and Romal Palmer (hamstring).
Manager view - Stephen Kenny (St Pat's): "(Besiktas) is an institution in Turkey. It's an incredible stadium, really incredible, and it's a very passionate home support. The players worked hard to get into Europe. Now we're here we want to put in a good performance. Obviously there will be some changes, all of the players can't play all of the games. Sunday is important as well so we've got to look at all that."

Richarlison brace gets Thomas Frank's Tottenham reign off to a winning start

Premier League: Tottenham 3 (Richarlison 10', 60', Johnson 66') Burnley 0 RICHARLISON scored two goals, the second of which is a goal of the season contender, to get Tottenham's Premier League campaign off to a flying start under new manager Thomas Frank. Richarlison's Spurs career has been disrupted by injuries, but the Brazilian showed why he was valued at €70m Euros when he was signed three years ago. Against new boys Burnley, his first goal was a smart strike from 12 yards, converting a cross from Mohammed Kudus with a low finish. His second, on the hour mark, was spectacular, as he produced a flying scissor kick from similar distance to volley home another Kudus cross. It was reminiscent of one he scored for Brazil against Serbia at the 2022 world cup, and a reminder that he can produce moments of magic in front of goal. Richarlison also played a part in Brennan Johnson's goal five minutes later which effectively sealed three points for Tottenham, against a hard-working Burnley side managed by former Spur Scott Parker and featuring another old boy, Kyle Walker, on his debut for the Clarets. Parker led Burnley to promotion on the back of a miserly defence, but they will have to go up a level to compete in the Premier League. Although they created more chances than Frank would have liked, they look lightweight in attack and not strong enough at the back when facing a team like Tottenham, still basking in the glory of their Europa League triumph 11 weeks ago. Frank has the task of taking Tottenham back to the higher reaches of the league, after their lowly 17th place finish last season, and it is clear he is prepared to be more flexible tactically than his predecessor Ange Postecoglou. The new manager walked around the touchline at the final whistle, applauding the home supporters, who had precious little to cheer about in the Premier League last season. Having played five at the back in the UEFA Super Cup final against Paris St Germain on Wednesday, and only losing to the European Champions on penalties, Frank reverted to a 4-3-3 formation and got his rewards with a solid display that was more workmanlike than thrilling – apart from Richarlison's superb strike. Frank could also enjoy a strong debut from Kudus, signed from West Ham in the summer, and if his side can continue to keep clean sheets, and score goals as freely as this, they should improve significantly on last season's league form. For Burnley, there will be easier games than Tottenham away, but Martin Dubravka, on his debut for them, went into the record books as the first Premier League keeper to be punished for holding the ball for more than eight seconds, with referee Michael Oliver awarding Tottenham a corner as the new law states. It was that sort of afternoon for the visitors, contrasting with job well done by Tottenham. TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Vicario 6; Porro 7, Romero 6, Van de Ven 7, Spence 7; Sarr 7, Gray 7 (Bentancur 71), Bergvall 7 (Palhinha 80); Kudus 7 (Tel 85), Richarlison 8 (Solanke 71), Johnson 7 (Odobert 80) BURNLEY (5-3-2): Dubravka 6; Sonne 5 (Tchaouna 74), Walker 6, Ekdal 5, Esteve 5, Hartman 6; Cullen 6, Anthony 7 (Edwards 85) Laurent 6 (Ugochukwu 63); Hannibal 6 (Bruun Larsen 63) Foster 6 (Flemming 74) Referee: M Oliver

Tottenham 3 Burnley 0: Richarlison gets Thomas Frank's reign up and running with stunning overhead kick

Richarlison's clinical finish got the ball rolling in the first half before his exquisite volley after the break was added to by Brennan Johnson's neat finish. 7 Richarlison sweeps Tottenham into the lead Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 7 Tottenham's No9 put in a sensational performance Credit: Reuters It showed just why Frank has been happy not to sign another centre-forward this summer, deeming ex-Everton man Richarlison to be adequate competition to support main man Dominic Solanke. So while Spurs look ready to splash serious cash on attackers like Eberechi Eze and Savinho, do not expect another traditional central striker to come through the door. Whether that proves a shrewd move or not very much depends on Richarlison's fitness this term. His talent has never been the problem. He is capable of things others are not, exemplified by his acrobatics for his second strike here. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL BALLS UP Spurs first team to benefit from new Premier League rule as Dubravka penalised But staying fit has consistently been an issue, particularly in the last two years under Ange Postecoglou. Frank knows he must find a way to keep Richarlison on the pitch and out of the treatment room. But if he can, then the 28-year-old's display here proved he has a player capable of winning matches on his own on his day. With Solanke easing his way back in after an ankle injury picked up in pre-season, Richarlison has been leading the line through most of the friendlies. Frank freshened up his team with some youthful exuberance, bringing in teenagers Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray into midfield, along with Europa League final hero Johnson. 'The operation succeeded but the patient died' - Thomas Frank's comments leaves fans stunned after Tottenham loss to PSG Bergvall almost broke the deadlock inside the first 26 seconds, but was denied by Martin Dubravka at close range. Slovakian Dubravka, making his debut for Burnley following his move from Newcastle, then became the first Premier League stopper to fall foul of the new rules over goalies holding onto the ball too long. The fresh regulations mean a goalkeeper will be penalised if they hold the ball in their hands for eight seconds or more, and a corner will be given to the opposition. That is exactly what happened when ref Michael Oliver punished Dubravka for that offence inside four minutes, but the resulting set-piece came to nothing. Spurs did take an early lead though, thanks to Richarlison's sharp finish and Burnley's slack defending. Centre-back Maxime Esteve - who has been linked with a move to Spurs on several occasions in the last two windows - fired a lax pass up the pitch which Pape Sarr collected. The Senegalese then fed the ball to Mohammed Kudus - one of three new buys to be presented to the crowd before kick-off, along with Kota Takai and Joao Palhinha. Kudus swung in a cross which caught Hjalmar Ekdal out and allowed Richarlison to sweep into the corner. 7 Brennan Johnson flicks Tottenham into a three-goal lead Credit: Reuters 7 The Wales international performs injured team-mate James Maddison's celebration Credit: Shutterstock Editorial It was only his 21st goal for Spurs in what is now his fourth season, but of course, so many of those previous campaigns have been blighted by injury. Frank, Richarlison and everyone at Spurs will be praying it is a different story this time round for the Brazilian - and this was the perfect start to his latest new beginning. Burnley remained composed in their response to the setback - almost as cool as their manager Scott Parker looked into the dugout. The former Spurs midfielder has always been something of a style icon since becoming a manager and wore a stylish, tight-fitting blue suit as he patrolled the dugout. His team created a few chances, too, with Esteve and Lyle Foster threatening the goal, while Guglielmo Vicario looked nervy when flapping at a Josh Laurent deflected strike. With no Kevin Danso in the starting XI, it was on Bergvall to provide the long throws for Frank's side. The Swede got some good distance on one particular launch, but lacked the power of his Austrian team-mate and Burnley cleared. It was a decent first half of Premier League football for Frank as Spurs boss, full of control, if not a lot of invention. His side stepped it up at the start of the second 45 though. First Micky van de Ven flicked wide a Kudus corner and then Richarlison had two quickfire shots denied, one by Esteve's block and the other by Dubravaka's well-placed left foot. Then came the moment of the match as Richarlison stepped up for his breathtaking second. Kudus dropped his shoulder down the right and swung in a cross which the Brazilian acrobatically crashed into the net, despite the ball being behind him. It reminded everyone just what he is capable of and why, when fit, he can be a real asset for Frank's side going forward. Parker's Burnley looked toast at that point - and they certainly were when Johnson made it 3-0 shortly after, converting Sarr's through-ball. Once again, Richarlison was key in the build-up, retaining possession masterfully before offloading to Sarr. If Spurs can finally keep him fit, after three seasons of injuries, then suddenly their attack looks like it will cause problems for any side.

Ruben Amorim more confident in Man Utd ahead of new season

Ruben Amorim says he feels "more confident" about Manchester United's qualities heading into Sunday's Premier League opener against Arsenal. A sense of optimism has returned to Old Trafford, just three months on from their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years being compounded by a damaging defeat in the Europa League final. Amorim has refreshed the squad, both in terms of personnel and mindset, since the end of a campaign in which the United head coach admitted he went into games knowing that they would struggle. But being backed in the transfer window over incomings and outgoings has helped changed that heading into Sunday's hotly-anticipated Old Trafford opener against Arsenal. "It is hard to know (what we will deliver) because we cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better," Amorim said. "I know that we are training harder, we are training better, so I know that we are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game. "We have new players that we need to understand in the real game what they are capable to do in the moment. "But I am really more confident. That is clear. I am more confident in this moment. "But, again, we cannot change everything in four weeks but step by step we are going to be a better team, but of course I am more confident." Benjamin Sesko is pushing to make his debut just a week on from joining the club from RB Leipzig, as are fellow summer acquisitions Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon. But there remains work to be done, with a number of players to shift out and a decision to be made on midfield after Brighton made clear they do not want to sell Carlos Baleba this summer. United are a work in progress but Amorim believes they are far better heading into the new campaign than the side that stumbled home 15th last term. "We want to return to Europe, but it is hard as a Manchester United coach to say one thing like that," he said. "But we need to be realistic with our fans. We are going to have to fight a lot because there's a lot of good teams with more time than us together, but we are going to fight for it. "We are going to improve. We want to focus game by game. If we are thinking now about how we are going to finish the season it is a problem. "Let's focus on game by game. We want to win against Arsenal, that is the main focus." The match against Mikel Arteta's Gunners pits Amorim against a striker he helped take to new heights. Viktor Gyokeres joined Sporting Lisbon from Coventry in 2023 and became one of Europe's most talked about frontmen in Europe under the Portuguese. There had been talk of a reunion with Amorim at Old Trafford but the Sweden international instead joined Arsenal and could make his debut against his former boss on Sunday. "It's a different league," Amorim said of Gyokeres. "The physicality is different. "In Sporting they have a very good group of scouting because they live from that, from the players they can buy and then sell to survive. "I think he is a very good player. He is going to give different characteristics. "It is going be different if we face in the beginning of the game Viktor or (Kai) Havertz, for example, so we need to be prepared for that but it's not a surprise to watch Viktor in a big club in England."
