Richarlison brace gets Thomas Frank's Tottenham reign off to a winning start
RICHARLISON scored two goals, the second of which is a goal of the season contender, to get Tottenham's Premier League campaign off to a flying start under new manager Thomas Frank.
Richarlison's Spurs career has been disrupted by injuries, but the Brazilian showed why he was valued at €70m Euros when he was signed three years ago. Against new boys Burnley, his first goal was a smart strike from 12 yards, converting a cross from Mohammed Kudus with a low finish.
His second, on the hour mark, was spectacular, as he produced a flying scissor kick from similar distance to volley home another Kudus cross. It was reminiscent of one he scored for Brazil against Serbia at the 2022 world cup, and a reminder that he can produce moments of magic in front of goal.
Richarlison also played a part in Brennan Johnson's goal five minutes later which effectively sealed three points for Tottenham, against a hard-working Burnley side managed by former Spur Scott Parker and featuring another old boy, Kyle Walker, on his debut for the Clarets.
Parker led Burnley to promotion on the back of a miserly defence, but they will have to go up a level to compete in the Premier League. Although they created more chances than Frank would have liked, they look lightweight in attack and not strong enough at the back when facing a team like Tottenham, still basking in the glory of their Europa League triumph 11 weeks ago.
Frank has the task of taking Tottenham back to the higher reaches of the league, after their lowly 17th place finish last season, and it is clear he is prepared to be more flexible tactically than his predecessor Ange Postecoglou.
The new manager walked around the touchline at the final whistle, applauding the home supporters, who had precious little to cheer about in the Premier League last season.
Having played five at the back in the UEFA Super Cup final against Paris St Germain on Wednesday, and only losing to the European Champions on penalties, Frank reverted to a 4-3-3 formation and got his rewards with a solid display that was more workmanlike than thrilling – apart from Richarlison's superb strike.
Frank could also enjoy a strong debut from Kudus, signed from West Ham in the summer, and if his side can continue to keep clean sheets, and score goals as freely as this, they should improve significantly on last season's league form.
For Burnley, there will be easier games than Tottenham away, but Martin Dubravka, on his debut for them, went into the record books as the first Premier League keeper to be punished for holding the ball for more than eight seconds, with referee Michael Oliver awarding Tottenham a corner as the new law states.
It was that sort of afternoon for the visitors, contrasting with job well done by Tottenham.
TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Vicario 6; Porro 7, Romero 6, Van de Ven 7, Spence 7; Sarr 7, Gray 7 (Bentancur 71), Bergvall 7 (Palhinha 80); Kudus 7 (Tel 85), Richarlison 8 (Solanke 71), Johnson 7 (Odobert 80)
BURNLEY (5-3-2): Dubravka 6; Sonne 5 (Tchaouna 74), Walker 6, Ekdal 5, Esteve 5, Hartman 6; Cullen 6, Anthony 7 (Edwards 85) Laurent 6 (Ugochukwu 63); Hannibal 6 (Bruun Larsen 63) Foster 6 (Flemming 74)

Underwhelming Chelsea settle for draw against Palace draw at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. As expected, Nicolas Jackson was not in Enzo Maresca's squad after being made surplus to requirements, with Newcastle considering a bid, while Joao Pedro was preferred at number nine to fellow new signing Liam Delap. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a first-half display low on creativity. Marc Cucurella had the first of their only two chances, his near-post header looping towards the far corner where it was nodded off the line by the leaping Ismaila Sarr. Eze looked to have obliged the headline writers after 15 minutes with an unstoppable free-kick that flew through the middle of the Chelsea wall and in, only for a VAR check to reveal Guehi had unfairly forced Moises Caicedo out of the ball's path. Moments later Jean-Philippe Mateta broke into the box but shot too close to Robert Sanchez, who bounced the effort to safety. There was little worthy of home fans' enthusiasm in attack in the first half, but they showed raucous appreciation for a wonderfully-timed, full-blooded tackle on Daniel Munoz by 19-year-old Josh Acheampong, making a third Premier League start in central defence, with Levi Colwill a long-term absentee and Wesley Fofana not risked. With Maresca having been told to seek internal solutions to his lack of defensive options, the academy graduate staked a convincing claim for regular game time with a display of maturity and fulsome grit that was warmly received by an otherwise subdued crowd. The best Chelsea chance of the half fell to Trevoh Chalobah, who fired high from eight yards after good work from debutant Jamie Gittens. Estevao Willian came on in the 53rd minute for a debut and, with his first action, breezed past Guehi in a foot race down the right before crossing brilliantly for Enzo Fernandez, who failed to make good contact. The Brazil international, still only 18 despite the hype surrounding his arrival from Palmeiras, betrayed his inexperience minutes later when striking wildly over the bar when off balance before being booked for lunging at Munoz. Eze was again almost the story when he drilled at goal and brought a two-handed save from Sanchez, then at the other end substitute Delap shot straight at Dean Henderson.

Nottingham Forest prove too good for Keith Andrews' Brentford
Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Keith Andrews' Brentford in their opening game of the Premier League season. Nuno expressed his "concern" for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after a rampant display at the City Ground. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. With more signings to come and a Europa League journey to look forward to after last season's seventh-place finish, Forest fans may have more optimism than their manager after this opener. It was the start that new boss Andrews would have dreaded. With Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard sold over the summer and Yoane Wissa effectively on strike trying to force a move away, the Dubliner has not been handed the easiest of tasks in his first managerial role. Igor Thiago got the Bees on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty, but life after Thomas Frank began poorly. Forest had only scored one goal in six excruciating pre-season friendlies, but they needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. Elliot Anderson's corner fell to Wood and the striker picked up where he left off last season by slamming home the loose ball from close range. Such was the novelty of scoring a goal, the celebrations on the touchline were wild, with goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa needing medical treatment after hitting his head on the roof of the dugout and suffering a nasty cut. Forest were electric and almost scored a brilliant team goal as new signing Ndoye, Morgan Gibbs-White and Anderson all combined, with the latter seeing a goalbound shot well blocked by Sepp van den Berg. Brentford looked to establish themselves in the game and forced goalkeeper Matz Sels into a good save when Yehor Yarmolyuk fizzed in a low shot. But Forest continued to dominate and two goals in five minutes before half-time sent them into dreamland. In the 42nd minute Gibbs-White arced in a delicious cross for Ndoye to send a flying header into the top corner. Then in the second minute of time added on Wood doubled his tally when he latched on to Anderson's through ball and rounded Caoimhin Kelleher to put it in an empty net. Forest were irresistible after the break as they searched for more goals. Callum Hudson-Odoi, on the brink of signing a new contract, stung the palms of Kelleher before Gibbs-White hooked an acrobatic effort just over the crossbar. Brentford brought on Jordan Henderson in the 68th minute as they tried to stem the tide and 10 minutes later they had reduced their deficit. Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare handled the ball in the area and Thiago rolled home the resulting penalty. There was no grandstand finish, though, as Forest got their season off to a winning start.

Nathan Collins 'targeted' by three Premier League giants
Ireland centre-back Nathan Collins is reportedly being targeted by three of the Premier League's 'big six' clubs. Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are all keeping an eye on the 24-year-old, according to the Daily Mail. Brentford may be reluctant to sell Collins however, having only made him their club captain this season. Nathan Collins is linked to three massive clubs. Pic: Tyler Miller/Sportsfile New Bees manager Keith Andrews holds his fellow Irishman in high regard and has described him as a 'natural leader'. Brentford have also already lost two key players this summer, Bryan Mbeumo to Man United and Christian Norgaard to Arsenal, with another star man Yoane Wissa looking to be heading towards the exit as well. Wissa is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and has been training away from the main squad. Collins joined Brentford for a club record fee. Pic: Brentford FC Liverpool are looking to improve their defensive depth and have been also linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. Meanwhile, United will seemingly only be able to add more signings to their squad should more outgoings occur. Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Rasmus Hojlund and Tyrell Malacia are all set to leave the club but are currently all still employed at Old Trafford. Brentford may be reluctant to sell Collins however, having only made him their club captain this season. Pic: Harry Murphy/Sportsfile Marcus Rashford left United earlier this summer on a loan move to Barcelona. The Serie A looks to be on the horizon for Sancho, Malacia and Hojlund, while Garnacho is reportedly set on a move to Chelsea. Spurs are also looking to strengthen their depth at the back and their new manager Thomas Frank would be fond of Collins after his time at Brentford. However, Frank may be reluctant to move for the Bees captain due to his 'level of respect for his former employers'. Collins has 30 caps for Ireland and has previously played for Stoke City, Burnley and Wolves. The defender joined Brentford for a club record £23m from Wolves on a six-year deal in 2023. He also became Stoke's youngest captain at the age of 18. Keith Andrews has earmarked Collins as a significant figure for Brentford this season and a move will no doubt be difficult to accomplish before the end of the transfer window.
