LYNDON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Authorities suspect a fire that burned a Lyndon barn to the ground early Saturday may have been intentionally set.
Lyndon firefighters arrived just before 6:30 a.m. to find a barn at Greenpoint Lane and Grimes Road so consumed by fire that they made no attempt to put it out, they told Vermont State Police.
The state's Public Safety Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit was called to the scene. Troopers say the fire is considered 'suspicious at this time' and the investigation will continue.
The barn was used as storage space at the time and did not house any livestock.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. James Wright at the state police's St. Johnsbury Barracks at 802-748-3111, leave an anonymous tip online at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit, or contact the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program hotline at 1-800-32-ARSON (1-800-322-7766). Canadian teen arrested in Vermont trying to drive dad to airport

DERBY, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – U.S. Border Patrol arrested a father and son Thursday after they tried to use a historic library as a cover to cross into the country. Reason Phung, 18, admitted to dropping his father Van Hoa Phung, 49, off at the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont. The library, which was built exactly on the Canada-U.S. border in 1904, has tightened restrictions on non-American visitors this year after pressure from the Trump administration. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol cited a rise in illicit activity as justification for the changes. Both Phungs are Canadian citizens. According to court records, border patrol agents saw Van Hoa Phung walking south wearing a red shirt and shorts and crossing the border near the library at around 2:35 p.m. on June 5. He was then picked up in a car by his son, who had legally crossed the border on his own earlier. Vermont DMV warns about traffic ticket scam Reason Phung then drove his father south into Vermont, where their car, a red Tesla, was stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol in a parking lot in Derby. The two men were then taken into custody. The younger Phung had previously claimed that he was crossing the border to visit his grandparents, but he had in fact intended to drive his father to an unspecified airport in the U.S., then return to Canada. Both the younger and the elder Phung pleaded guilty in court on Friday, and received sentences of time served for making false statements and illegally entering the U.S., respectively. The Escape at Dannemora: 10 Years Later While Canadians are still allowed to visit the library, they may no longer use the main entrance, which lies on the American side, without a pre-existing membership and library card. Instead, they must use a newly opened side entrance for international visitors. The library's website reminds patrons, 'International law requires you to exit through the same door you entered.' Bryan man sentenced to 40 years for beating ex-girlfriend

BRYAN, Texas (FOX 44) – A Bryan man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for beating his ex-girlfriend. The Brazos County District Attorney's Office says 32-year-old Olajawon Agube Mason was sentenced on Friday. He received 40 years for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, plus 40 years for Assault Family Violence Strangulation with a Previous Conviction as well as ten years in prison for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Judge Kyle Hawthorne also made affirmative findings of family violence and the use of a deadly weapon. Mason was originally sentenced to two years in prison in February 2019, after a jury trial in which he was convicted of Burglary of a Habitation. In this case, the jury heard evidence that Mason had broken into the home of his girlfriend, kicked in the door to her bathroom, and strangled her. He had no prior criminal history. The D.A.'s Office says shortly after Mason was released from prison on September 15, 2022, police responded to the same address. Officers discovered the same victim as in the previous case. This time, the victim was severely beaten and required immediate medical attention. Medical personnel and police documented severe bruising and swelling to the victim's face, bleeding from her nose and ears, and extensive evidence of strangulation. The girlfriend reported that she had lost consciousness during the assault and had little memory of what occurred. Gang member sentenced for violent burglary of habitation The D.A.'s Office says police also spoke with the 9-1-1 caller, who identified herself as the sister of the victim. This witness reported that Mason pointed a firearm at her before locking himself in the bedroom with his girlfriend. The sister reported hearing significant banging from the room and her sister screaming, but she was not able to enter. The sister snuck out of the home and called 9-1-1. The two young children of Mason and the victim were inside the home at the time of the assault. Bryan Police responded quickly to the scene and witnessed Mason fleeing the home. Despite setting up a perimeter and employing drones and canine resources, Mason managed to evade authorities. The D.A.'s Office says Mason was placed on the Brazos County Domestic Violence High Risk Team List, and also on the Most Wanted List in Brazos County. Multiple law enforcement agencies both inside and outside of the county worked to apprehend Mason while he remained a fugitive. Mason was ultimately apprehended in January 2025 by the Bryan Police Department's Direct Deployment Team. As a result of finding the deadly weapon, Mason will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Both Mason's now ex-girlfriend and her sister received lifetime protective orders as part of the plea. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
