SIBUR unveils updated sustainability strategy through 2030

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 6 June 2025 - SIBUR, Russia's largest producer of polymers and rubbers, has successfully concluded its five-year sustainability strategy and presented new targets for the next five-year period, 2025–2029. By 2030, the company aims to recycle at least 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste through its own and partner initiatives, including through the expansion of contract manufacturing for processing various types of plastics. In 2024, SIBUR recycled 111,000 tonnes of polymer waste, surpassing its target of 100,000 tonnes per year. Over the next five years, SIBUR plans to increase its annual output of sustainable products – those made with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or that incorporate recycled or bio-based feedstock – to 400,000 tonnes. For comparison, the company produced 287,000 tonnes of such products in 2024. "Polymers are becoming an essential element in the global energy transition and green economy; their role in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency is only growing," said Nadezhda Galaktionova, Head of Sustainability and Climate Solutions at SIBUR. "That's why we were the first company in Russia to make increasing revenue from sustainable product sales a specific financial target in our ESG strategy." Another ambitious goal set by SIBUR for 2025–2029 is the development, implementation and scaling of chemical recycling technologies for mixed plastics (thermolysis). This innovative approach aims to significantly improve plastic waste management in Russia. In the next five years, SIBUR intends to achieve carbon neutrality at two more facilities through improved energy efficiency, purchases of green electricity, and the allocation of carbon units. Under the previous strategy, the company's SIBUR-PETF plant in the Tver region became Russia's first carbon-neutral production site. By 2030, SIBUR also plans to reduce its GHG emissions per tonne of product by 10% compared with 2024 levels and to support at least two nature-based climate projects. Under the previous strategy, the company verified over 3 million carbon units from climate projects at its facilities and planted more than 5 million trees. The new strategy also targets a 10% reduction in water consumption for operational needs. By 2030, SIBUR aims to increase the percentage of women in engineering and production roles at the company to at least 30% and to provide additional support for working mothers. Insights: The renaissance of philanthropy in the Middle East

Image: Supplied In Middle Eastern society, where tradition and innovation intertwine, philanthropy is undergoing a transformative renaissance. It is a journey marked by strategic foresight, where the youth and women are steering the shift from benevolence as a cultural hallmark to philanthropy as a strategic pillar of sustainable development and ESG objectives. Historically, philanthropic initiatives in the Middle East were deeply rooted in cultural and religious values, particularly the ethos of hospitality and community solidarity. Today, this foundational layer, characterised by informal charity, has become a more strategic, structured, and impactful movement, with charitable organisations increasingly focusing on long-term solutions rather than immediate relief. Maysa Jalbout's conversation on the Flavors of Ambition podcast highlighted the evolving landscape of philanthropy in the Middle East. She discussed the shift towards strategic giving, the rise of young and women philanthropists, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Maysa emphasised how cultural values and traditions play a crucial role in fostering trust and driving impactful change in the region. The global pivot toward more accountable, impactful, and sustainable philanthropic practices echoes in the Middle East, underlining a universal recognition among next-generation philanthropists who are blending tradition and innovation to create a future where philanthropy transcends benevolence to become an engine of systemic transformation. Navigating the shift: The torchbearers of change Two population segments are leading this odyssey: women and youth. They bring to the fore innovative models of giving, where transparency, collaboration, and impact orientation converge. This brigade of next-generation philanthropists, with their fingertips on technology, are redefining the parameters of charitable giving. Women, in this transformative saga, are pioneering, directing more capital toward initiatives that promise grassroots impact, gender equity, and sustainable growth. Their perspective enriches the philanthropic landscape with insights that challenge conventional funding models, thereby, reshaping how resources are allocated and utilized for maximum social return. In the pursuit of a multidimensional approach to philanthropy, education, and climate action have emerged as central pillars. Investment in education, from technology-driven solutions to gender-inclusive policies, is laying the foundation for economic diversification and the empowerment of future generations. Simultaneously, the urgency of climate action has galvanised philanthropists to commit resources toward renewable energy, water conservation, and climate literacy. This focus is not only a response to the existential threat of climate change but a strategic investment in the region's sustainability and resilience. The Horizon: Building bridges toward systemic impact Looking ahead, the trajectory of philanthropy in the Middle East points towards increased institutionalization, with philanthropic entities adopting more structured, transparent, and accountable frameworks. This evolution will likely foster deeper, more strategic collaborations both within the region and with global partners, amplifying the impact of philanthropic initiatives. The coming years will likely see: Increased institutionalisation: More philanthropists will establish structured foundations with clear governance and impact strategies. Greater transparency and accountability: Donors will adopt stronger reporting mechanisms to ensure effective fund utilization. Regional and global collaborations: As philanthropy becomes more strategic, we will see increased partnerships between Middle Eastern donors and international organizations to address global challenges. Youth-driven social change: With over 60 per cent of the region's population under the age of 30, young philanthropists will bring fresh energy and innovative approaches to giving. As we stand on the cusp of a new era, the Middle East's philanthropic shift from traditional charity to strategic, impactful giving marks a pivotal moment in the region's social and economic narrative. Guided by the strategic insights and innovative practices of its youth and women, philanthropy in the Middle East is poised to contribute not just to the region's sustainable development but to global efforts toward equitable growth and resilience. In this journey, the role of strategic advice and partnership cannot be understated. By embracing transparency, accountability, and collaboration, stakeholders across the spectrum can unlock the full potential of philanthropy as a transformative force for good, ensuring that the rich tapestry of Middle Eastern society is woven with threads of generosity, innovation, and strategic foresight for generations to come.
