Puri stampede: Congress demands resignation of Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi
'The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Monday (June 30, 2025) demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy CM Pravati Parida and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, holding them accountable for the stampede in Puri that claimed three lives and left more than 50 injured,' a statement by the party said.
'The party also demanded ₹50 lakh ex-gratia for each of the deceased devotees and ₹25 lakh for those seriously injured. While Majhi had announced ₹25 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased,' the Congress said the amount was insufficient.
Three persons, including two women, were killed and more than 50 others injured in a stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri on Sunday (June 29, 2025) during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities.
The incident took place at around 4.20 a.m. when thousands of devotees had gathered near the chariots parked in front of the temple.
Calling the tragedy a result of gross mismanagement, the party has demanded a judicial inquiry led by a sitting district judge, rejecting the State Government's administrative probe headed by the development commissioner.
A fact-finding OPCC team led by former party president Prasad Harichandan visited the holy town on Sunday (June 29, 2025) to conduct an inquiry into the stampede incident. The team visited the spot and met the injured persons being treated at the district headquarters hospital.
"The team was shocked and saddened to learn that two critically injured patients — whose legs were reportedly completely crushed — had been discharged without proper treatment," the party said in a statement on Monday (June 30, 2025.)
'The team alleged that the government was making all efforts to downplay the incident while turning a blind eye to the treatment of the injured devotees,' it said.
The party insisted that the judicial inquiry's recommendations be implemented within 10 days of the 'Niladri Bije' ritual, the return of the deities to the main temple, marking the conclusion of the Rath Yatra.
Meanwhile, Congress MP from Odisha, Saptagiri Ulaka, and leader Arabinda Das addressed a press conference in New Delhi on the same incident.

Draft bill for T'gana gig workers' social security published
The Congress-led Telangana government has published a draft bill to provide social security and regulate the working conditions for gig workers—one of the political priorities for the party. The draft bill, named The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2025, proposes a 'Gig and Platform Workers Social Security and Welfare Fund', which will be financed by the government and the aggregators. It says every aggregator or platform shall mandatorily make pay-out with no delay and must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the platform-based gig worker. The bill comes weeks after Lok Sabha's Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, described the condition of gig workers, who work without any social benefits, as 'modern day slavery' during a debate in Parliament. In 2023, Rajasthan's Ashok Gehlot government became the first administration to enact a law to provide social safety to gig workers. The Telangana bill says 'The State Government shall… constitute a Board to be known as the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Welfare Board.' This board 'shall, as and when necessary, notify general or sector specific social security and other benefits which shall be implemented by the Board as notified by the State Government.' Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted that after Rajasthan and Karnataka, Telangana is the third state where legislation are being made on this issue. 'It is only Congress governments that have ensured justice and better working conditions for lakhs of gig workers. Workers' justice has been a crucial part of the Congress Party's and Rahul Gandhi ji's central vision - this bill is proof of that commitment.' During the 17th Lok Sabha, the standing committee on labour—then led by BJD (now BJP) lawmaker Bhartruhari Mahtab—had proposed a unique identity for all unorganized workers. The panel felt that the unorganised sector-which constitutes more than 90% of India's workforce—needs a unique ID to access targeted benefits. The bill says, 'An aggregator or platform may terminate a gig or a platform worker by following the principles of natural justice after due enquiry only by giving valid reason/s in writing and with prior notice of seven (07) days. However, in case a threat (physical or mental) is foreseen to the end consumer, the gig worker may be terminated immediately.' It added that 'Every aggregator / platform shall mandatorily make pay-out as per the contract with no delay in disbursal of pay. Reasonable working conditions. The aggregator must provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the platform-based Gig worker.' Based in Hyderabad, the board will be headed by the state's labour minister, a representative of the Union labour ministry, top-ranking state officials, four representatives each from gig workers and aggregators and two civil society members. The board will ensure registration of Gig and Platform workers, registration of aggregators or platforms, 'Set up a monitoring mechanism to certify that welfare fund fee is being duly collected' and 'Ensure implementation of general and specific social security schemes based on contributions made, as may be notified by the State Government and disburse the social security benefits to the Gig and Platform workers.' Under the proposed law, a Gig and Platform worker shall have the right to register with the government 'on being onboarded on any platform, irrespective of the duration of the work.' The workers will be provided a 'Unique ID applicable across all platforms, have access to general and specific social security schemes based on contributions made by them subject to minimum number of transactions/gig 12 work undertaken by the gig and platform worker with any aggregator or platforms in a quarter.'

INDIA bloc promises healthcare transformation in Bihar with Rajasthan blueprint
Patna, June 30 (UNI) Ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar, the INDIA bloc today promised to transform the healthcare system in Bihar after forming the government. Veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot announced here that a Rajasthan-model healthcare system will be implemented in Bihar to achieve the goal. He said that Bihar's healthcare system has collapsed during the 20-year rule of Nitish Kumar. A recent CAG report has laid bare the extent of this failure. The medical staff shortage is critical. With 59,168 approved positions, only 23,851 are filled—a 60% vacancy rate. He claimed the problem is even worse for Ayush doctors (89% vacant), paramedical staff (79% vacant), and specialist doctors (up to 86% vacant). Gehlot said: 'An INDIA bloc government in Bihar will implement a Chiranjeevi scheme, mirroring Rajasthan's Congress government's initiative, providing up to Rs25 lakh in free medical treatment at both public and private hospitals for all income levels.' As Chief Minister of Rajasthan he had enacted the Right to Health Act in Rajasthan, guaranteeing free treatment for all emergencies. The move had significantly reduced out-of-pocket medical costs for ordinary citizens and explored making health insurance universally accessible and affordable. The Chiranjeevi Bima Yojana provided Rs10 lakh in health insurance and Rs5 lakh in accident insurance. It also covered medication costs for five days prior to and fifteen days after hospitalisation. This plan made Rs5 lakh in coverage accessible to all income levels, a first for the nation. He added: 'We also expanded healthcare by establishing medical colleges, increasing hospital capacity, and boosting the availability of doctors, vaccinations, and maternity services.' AICC Bihar in-charge Krishna Allavaru also criticised the state's healthcare system, claiming the current government has reduced Bihar to a state of crisis. He stated that the people of Bihar are suffering immensely due to the severely deteriorated healthcare services. He further asserted that the government's mismanagement has pushed the state's healthcare system to a critical point, referencing a CAG report acknowledging the dire state of healthcare in Bihar. ‘Will have nothing to do with Raj': Congress on Thackeray cousins' possible alliance
MUMBAI: The rapprochement between the Thackeray cousins has led to a decision from a Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance partner. The Congress' Maharashtra in-charge Ramesh Chennithala on Monday said that the party would have no truck with Raj Thackeray because of his stand against North Indians. (HT Photo) The issue was discussed at a meeting in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the party's stand for the upcoming local body elections. The meeting was chaired by Chennithala, and all senior leaders from the state Congress were present. 'The leaders voiced their concern over the growing bonhomie between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, following which Chennithala told them it was not in their hands, but if the Thackerays went in for an alliance, the Congress would take its own decision,' said a senior leader privy to the development. Chennithala's statement has put a question mark on the future of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA). A three-party coalition comprising the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP, the MVA was formed in 2019 after the Sena decided to snap ties with the BJP. The three parties contested the last Lok Sabha and assembly elections together. After Uddhav and Raj decided to hold a joint protest against the state government for making Hindi a third language in state schools, the Congress chose not to join the protest despite opposing the decision. Meanwhile, the Congress will also decide whether to go solo or contest the BMC elections as an alliance. 'We will take a final decision after holding a meeting of the political advisory committee of the party in Mumbai on July 5,' said Chennithala, admitting that Congress workers wanted to go solo. 'The local body elections are for workers, and obviously they want them to be contested without any alliance,' he stated. The party leadership is of the view that going solo is necessary to safeguard the party's organisational interests, given that its position is getting weaker with every passing year. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting held in New Delhi on May 13 where all the senior leaders from Mumbai were present, Congress insiders revealed.
