Flick calls up 18-year-old Barcelona starlet to training ahead of Atletico Madrid clash

Yahoo15-03-2025
Barcelona return to action in La Liga tomorrow as they face off fellow title-challengers Atletico Madrid in a clash of huge implications.
The Blaugrana have yet to beat Atletico this season, losing the reverse fixture in La Liga back in December and then being held to a draw in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash.
As Barcelona kicked off preparations for the game against Los Rojiblancos, there was a new face in the training session in the form of goalkeeper Max Bonfill, reports Mundo Deportivo.
The 18-year-old shot-stopper is a part of the Juvenil A setup under Juliano Belletti and has featured once in the UEFA Youth League this season.

Bonfill had been part of a training session with the first-team squad earlier this week as well and has now been called up again by manager Hansi Flick on the eve of the game against Atletico Madrid.
Bonfill's presence is mainly because Ander Astralaga and Diego Kochen are with the reserve team, who this afternoon play against Tarazona for their survival in the Primera RFEF.
Meanwhile, Aron Yaakobishvili and Eder Aller are with the Juvenil A team who will play the final of the Copa del Rey Juvenil against Zaragoza on Sunday noon.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen and Marc Bernal are the only absentees due to injuries for Barcelona as they get set to take on Diego Simeone's side.

Veteran Belgian centerback Axel Witsel leaves Atletico Madrid for Girona

Veteran Belgian centerback Axel Witsel leaves Atletico Madrid for Girona originally appeared on The Sporting News With the opening of the 2024-25 La Liga season just days away, 36-year old Belgian centerback Axel Witsel is officially leaving Atletico Madrid on a free transfer to Girona. Earlier in the transfer window, Witsel entertained a future in Italy after agreeing to personal terms with Udinese, but a final agreement never came to fruition. Now, Witsel is set to remain in La Liga as a member of manager Michel Sanchez's Girona. Over the past three seasons, Witsel was a key member of the Atletico Madrid defensive unit as the versatile, pass-proficient Belgian logged well over 2,000 minutes in each of his first two seasons with the Spanish side. As a reformed midfielder with a tenacious, intelligent defensive approach to challenges, Atletico manager Diego Simeone utilized Witsel as part of his iconic back three-at-the-back formation with regularity. In fact, Witsel started 19 Champions League matches for Atletico during that timeframe, so his value to the club remained clear even if he accepted a diminished role throughout the 2024-25 season. However, Atletico Madrid recently acquired centerback Clement Lenglet on a permanent deal after hosting the defender on loan from Barcelona during the 2024-25 season. Now that Lenglet will stay with Atletico long-term, the club felt comfortable enough with its defensive options to move on from Witsel. Prior to joining Atletico ahead of the 2022-23 season, Witsel spent four years in the Bundesliga with Dortmund, including a nine goal-contribution campaign in the 2019-20 season. Now joining Girona, Witsel will take on a new challenge with a club entering the Champions League for the first time in its history. With that in mind, Witsel can provide defensive stability, leadership and experience in spades while contributing to the Blanquivermell's debut in the European competition. And although Witsel's mobility has decreased with age, the veteran could comfortably slot into the Girona midfield, perhaps in a holding role, if the club so chooses. READ MORE: Sevilla's Loic Bade nearing transfer to Bayer Leverkusen On Friday, Aug. 15, Witsel's new squad, Girona, will host Rayo Vellanco to begin this season's La Liga campaign. Barcelona will make efforts to register another new signing apart from Joan Garcia before Mallorca clash

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are moving quickly to ensure Marcus Rashford is registered in time for their La Liga opener against Mallorca. It must be remembered that the Manchester United loanee has not yet been officially added to the league's books as a new Barça player, but the club is confident they can complete the process before Saturday's kick-off against Mallorca. The immediate priority for the Catalan side is finalising the registration of goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who is set to step in during Marc-Andre ter Stegen's long-term absence. Once that is done, attention will turn fully to Rashford. Barcelona believe both cases can be resolved promptly, though time remains tight. Financial moves to secure fair play compliance Barcelona's ability to register Rashford and other pending players hinges on meeting La Liga's financial fair play rules. (Photo by Han Myung-Gu/Getty Images) The club is waiting for both the auditor and La Liga to give the green light for the sale of VIP seats at the Spotify Camp Nou, a deal expected to bring in around €100 million. This significant revenue boost would allow Barça to return to a 1:1 ratio in their salary cap calculations, giving them the space needed to finalise new registrations. It is also worth noting that the board of directors recently approved a guarantee to cover a €7 million deficit caused by the club's sports sections. This proactive step was taken to avoid further fair play complications and keep transfer plans on track. If these financial measures are approved in time, Barcelona could register all remaining unlisted players. However, not every new signing is expected to be available for the first league game. The focus, nevertheless, remains on having key players like Rashford ready to feature, as the club looks to start their season strongly against a competitive Mallorca side.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus open surprise talks over double deal

Atletico Madrid were expected to do little more business in the transfer market, but with the La Liga kick-off a little over 24 hours away, Los Colchoneros are now involved in talks with Juventus over two players. The word coming from the Metropolitano was that Los Rojiblancos would not be doing any more business this summer unless there were exits, beyond that of forward Carlos Martin. However two reports have emerged out of the blue. Discussions for Nicolas Gonzalez Matteo Moretto has reported that Atletico Madrid have opened talks for Juventus winger Nicolas Gonzalez, in a move that could be a permanent deal. The Argentina international is not a key part of Juventus' plans, just a season after arriving at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. The Biaconeri spent €36.5m on Gonzalez over the course of his loan and permanent move from Fiorentina. The 27-year-old is open to the move. Juventus interested in Nahuel Molina Image viaMeanwhile less than an hour apart, German Garcia Grova of TyC Sports has assured that La Vecchia Signora have also opened talks with Atletico for right-back Nahuel Molina. He was linked with an exit earlier in the window, and has a deal until 2027. Garcia explains that Gonzalez is an option that has been discussed as a result of Juve not meeting Atletico's asking price. Surprise moves for Atletico Madrid Last month it seemed as if Molina would be on his way out, but more recently it had been reported that Los Rojiblancos were happy to hold onto him. Similarly, in the final third, Giacomo Raspadori's signing from Napoli was thought to be their last bit of business excepting a departure. It may well be that Diego Simeone sees both Molina and Gonzalez as right wing-backs or midfielders, rather than right-backs, which from a squad planning perspective could make more sense.
