Rolex 24, Hour 20: Porsche-vs-BMW GTP fight heating up

Yahoo26-01-2025
Porsche Penske Motorsport's Laurens Vanthoor is leading the 63rd Rolex 24 At Daytona with four hours to go, but BMW M Team RLL is interjecting itself between the two factory Porsches.
That's because Kevin Magnussen has driven the No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8 past the No. 6 Penske Porsche 963 of Matt Campbell shortly after the most recent green flag restart. Magnussen is still aboard the No. 24 BMW, while Mathieu Jaminet is back in the No. 6 Porsche.
Vanthoor leads by about eight seconds in GTP while, about a minute behind him, the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 of Colin Braun runs fourth as the last car on the lead lap.
Porsche Penske has also staggered its pit strategies since the last couple of full course yellows — the No. 7 is a few laps further into its energy tank than the No. 6, but these strategies should converge towards the end of the race, and definitely will if another FCY is deployed.
Dane Cameron is stretching his advantage out in the No. 99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2. The reigning IMSA champion leading the class from reigning Le Mans 24 Hours winner Nicklas Nielsen in the No. 88 AF Corse ORECA.
Nielsen overtook Tower Motorsports' Sebastian Alvarez for second place; Alvarez is now third with Ryan Dalziel in fourth for ERA Motorsport.
LMP2 battle for second! A little over 4 hours to go, things are picking up.

The No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 is the latest retirement from the field in GTD as a result of damage sustained in an incident that also involved the No. 78 Forte Racing Lamborghini and the No. 80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3.
The No. 78 is still in the garage undergoing repairs, as is the No. 023 Triarsi Competizione Ferrari which went behind the wall after a severe vibration led to further work under the front end. The No. 80 Mercedes has returned though it is now 30 laps down in GTD.
We do have five makes in the top five in GTD PRO, separated by relatively slim margins. Connor De Phillippi has taken over the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the American leads the No. 4 Corvette Racing Z06 GT3.R of Tommy Milner by 1.5s.
Milner had a close call with the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus that ended up giving the Lexus a left-front puncture, but the No. 4 Pratt Miller Corvette avoided a penalty. Antonio Garcia's contact with his countryman Miguel Molina was not given the same grace — Garcia and the No. 3 Corvette got a drive-through for avoidable contact with the No. 81 DragonSpeed Ferrari.
GetSpeed's first Rolex 24 is going well — Luca Stolz is running third in the No. 69 Mercedes-AMG GT3, followed closely by the No. 65 Ford Multimatic Mustang GT3 of Chris Mies.
In GTD it's still the No. 13 AWA Corvette in front driven by Marvin Kirchhöfer, by five seconds over the No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche of Tom Sargent.
But the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG is back in the fight after its earlier drive-through penalty that took the reigning GTD champions out of the lead. Philip Ellis is third, ahead of Heart of Racing's Tom Gamble.

Corvette And Gran Turismo Team Up To Create CX.R Vision Gran Turismo

Corvette has never looked so good. And it's all thanks to a timely collaboration between the sporting car brand and Gran Turismo's designers. Having sold over 90 million driving games since 1997, Gran Turismo changed the definition of online driving simulator games. The movie Gran Turismo was a hit at the box office in 2023 and the brand is well-known for creating the gamer-to-racer GT Academy platform way back in 2008 that saw some 9 gamers become real-world racing drivers. Gran Turismo's manufacturer Polyphony Digital is also well-known in motoring circles for creating the Vision Gran Turismo series back in 2013. Created to celebrate Gran Turismo's 15th anniversary, this was a groundbreaking special project featuring concept cars specially designed for the series by automakers and coachbuilders like Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, Lamborghini and now, in 2025—Corvette with its CX.R Vision Gran Turismo (VGT). In the yellow color scheme, Corvette won at Le Mans According to Chevrolet, the CX.R VGT imagines the future of Corvette GT racing – a future gamers will be able to drive in Gran Turismo 7. The CX.R VGT racecar embodies Corvette's history while looking to the future of automotive performance, or so says Corvette. The familiar yellow and black color scheme honors the Corvette GT race cars of the past 25 years, a color combination that has won Le Mans as recently as 2023. Designers took the latest Corvette CX's athletic exterior and ramped up the aggression for CX.R VGT with more prominent active aero features and a lower ride height for racetrack-dominating downforce and grip. Weight has been reduced across the car to further highlight the focus on performance. Inside the cabin, the touring-inspired dash and materials of the CX have been replaced by functional, high-performance appointments with lightweight raw carbon fiber weave and suede-wrapped seats for extra grip and support where the driver needs it. Using the powertrain template of the Corvette CX concept, the CX.R VGT employs electrified performance with a high-revving, mid-mounted, twin-turbo 2.0-liter V8 engine pumping out 900 horsepower while revving to 15,000 rpm. Powered by renewable e-fuel, this V8 supercar propels the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. But with three electric motors – one for each front wheel, plus a third incorporated into the 8-speed gearbox – total system output reached a ballistic 2,000 hp. If you're a gamer, there's good news. Working with Polyphony Digital, a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Chevrolet will make the CX.R VGT racecar concept available for fans to drive virtually in Gran Turismo 7 later this month, giving new and established fans a chance to experience Corvette power firsthand.

GM wows with Corvette, Cadillac concepts at Monterey Car Week

CARMEL, Calif – GM brought some Detroit muscle to the rarified air of Monterey Car Week — with a twist. While the Corvette nameplate falls under the Chevrolet brand, more and more it stands out on its own. At The Quail event in Carmel Valley, where multi-million dollar Paganis are displayed alongside priceless gullwing Mercedes SL coupes (and the parking lot is a show in and of itself), Corvette showed off two concepts that showed where the sportscar is headed in the future. The CX and its racing-inspired twin the CX-R, evoke supercar looks that go beyond the current 'C8' Corvette. The two concepts feature fighter jet-style interiors, with a trick canopy opening to boot. The twist — the CX is all electric, which is becoming a rarity at the higher end, and the CX-R features hybrid power. The racy CX-R will also be a drivable car in the Gran Turismo 7 racing game on PlayStation. And the response, beyond the oohs and ahhs, was strong for vehicles that aren't going on sale. 'We've had a number of customers that have already said, 'Could we buy one of those vehicles today?,'' said Rory Harvey, EVP and President of Global Markets, from the Quail Event to Yahoo Finance. Harvey, who essentially leads on all GM brands globally, noted that customers were asking to buy a vehicle with no pricing info, and wouldn't even be released. It was a good opportunity though, to collect future client info from buyers who typically own multiple cars. 'Just listening to the customers, the enthusiasts that are on the stage, I mean, the feedback is outstanding,' Harvey said. The UK-born exec noted that Corvette, in his opinion, was already at supercar levels, with competitive lap times at places like the Nurburgring in Germany, and 38% market share in the luxury sports car segment, making it the leader. Harvey's purview extends to Cadillac, where the luxury brand showed off its 'Elevated Velocity' concept, a cross-over style EV SUV meant to evoke the high-desert landscape. The new design language may hint at more curves and swooping design, as opposed to Cadillac's traditional angular features and vertical light bars. Regardless, Cadillac as a brand has been on a winning streak with its combination of traditional gas powered cars like the Escalade and CT5 sedans, and EVs like the Lyriq and Optiq. 'Cadillac now has done 12 consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth, which is absolutely superb. But in quarter two, Cadillac is now the number one luxury brand for EVs. So again, that's really, really strong,' Harvey said. 'We've launched so many new products over the course of the last two years, and that momentum continues to build. So we're looking at, how do we keep our foot on the accelerator pedal and build even further?' Harvey said he wasn't terribly concerned over the upcoming loss of the EV tax credit, because the brand would be able 'flex' into its other gas-powered offerings like the XT crossovers if its EVs were not price competitive. While a nice game plan, it doesn't address the fact the company invested heavily in EVs, and might take a hit to sales. Another challenge is tariffs, where GM took a big hit in the second quarter and stands to feel more pain in the second half of the year. Harvey noted the trade deals in place are mostly preliminary, so when the details come out the company will have a hard look at its manufacturing footprint, product portfolio in terms of territory, and where the company can minimize its tariff exposure. 'We've publicly stated that we believe that we can mitigate approximately 30% of the impact of tariffs; so, we're in a strong position at the moment,' Harvey said of GM's ability to pivot around President Trump's tariff war. Harvey still believes GM is in a great spot regardless of tariffs, and it's because of products like the current Corvette and Cadillac portfolio — cars that are selling well in the marketplace. 'If you looked at just General Motors sales in the US, we are the fastest growing brand, full stop. And if you look to the nearest competitor, they're about half the level of growth that we've got. So customers love our products.' Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. You can follow him on X and on Instagram.
