SL vs BAN: Shanto hits twin tons as Bangladesh draws first Test against Sri Lanka
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto blasted twin centuries to help his side draw the first test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday, while Angelo Mathews brought the curtain down on his red-ball career after more than 100 games for the hosts.
Shanto followed up his first-innings hundred with an unbeaten 125 in the second stanza after Mushfiqur Rahim was run out for 49, and Bangladesh declared on 285-6 to set Sri Lanka a steep victory target of 296 runs from 37 overs.
Sri Lanka lost a couple of quick wickets before Mathews, a veteran with more than 8,000 test runs to his name, held steadfast with the bat - albeit barely scoring any runs. In the end, Bangladesh called it a day with the score on 72-4 with five overs left.
Bangladesh had Sri Lanka toil on the opening two days, amassing 495 runs in its first innings, including 148 for Shanto and 163 for Rahim, with Litton Das (90) unlucky to miss out on a century of his own.

What followed was a batting tug-of-war on a placid wicket as Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka piled up 187 runs before Dinesh Chandimal (54) and Kamindu Mendis (87) helped the host reach 485 to concede only a 10-run lead at the halfway mark.
TURN AND BOUNCE
Bangladesh off-spinner Nayeem Hasan, who had begun to extract turn and bounce on a pitch showing signs of wear on the fourth day, claimed 5-121 - his fourth five-wicket haul in tests - to ensure Sri Lanka could not build a lead of its own.
The tourist then roared to 177-3 in its second innings at the end of the penultimate day for a healthy advantage, with Shadman Islam (76) giving it the chance to push for a rare overseas test victory and valuable World Test Championship points.
After showers late in the opening session on the fifth day wiped out 26 overs, Shanto reached his well-deserved hundred and asked Sri Lanka to bat again and attempt to chase down its big target at an asking rate of eight runs an over.
Former captain Mathews, who scored 39 in Sri Lanka's first innings, showed resilience in the final session and received a standing ovation when he fell for eight off 45 balls in his 119th and final test.
The result was the first drawn game in Galle for 12 years. The second test starts in Colombo next Wednesday, and the two sides later play three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

Angelo Mathews receives special tribute on Test farewell as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh play out draw in Galle
Senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews signed off as Sri Lanka's third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 8,214 runs at an average of 44.40 in 119 appearances, scoring 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries along the way. He was dismissed for scores of 39 and 8 in his final Test appearance. read more Angelo Mathews made his 119th and final Test appearance against Bangladesh in Galle. AP It was the end of an era in Sri Lankan cricket on Saturday with Angelo Mathews bidding Test cricket an emotional goodbye in Galle. Mathews had previously stated that the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Galle International Stadium would be his last in whites, and signed off with scores of 39 and 8 as the match ended in a stalemate, with rain further pushing the match towards a draw. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Mathews, who had made his international debut against Zimbabwe in November 2008, signs off as Sri Lanka's third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket after Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814) with 8,214 runs at an average of 44.40. The seam-bowling all-rounder, who has 33 wickets including a four-fer to his name in the format, collected 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries in a remarkable 16-year Test career. And it was only fitting for the iconic player to be given a fitting farewell. After receiving a guard of honour from the Sri Lankan as well as Bangladeshi teams, Mathews received a special kite tribute from someone present at the seaside cricketing venue. Watch: It's Angelo Mathews' last day as a Test cricketer, and someone is paying a very Lankan tribute. It's the start of kite-flying season in SL, and this huge Naya (cobra) kite with Mathews' name on it has just started flying above the ground. — Andrew Fidel Fernando (@afidelf) June 21, 2025 Rain robs Bangladesh of dramatic victory at Galle The first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka fizzled out into a damp draw with rain robbing the match in Galle of a proper climax. Sri Lanka were set a tall order of 296 in 37 overs and were tottering at 72-4 when stumps were drawn 9.5 overs into the final hour, with both captains shaking hands and accepting no result was possible. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The day belonged to Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored centuries in both innings. 'We were low on confidence coming into the series but this was a very good Test match,' he said. 'We wanted to declare early but rain forced us to rethink.' Shanto made an unbeaten 125 in the second innings after posting 148 in his first dig. It was the second time he had achieved the feat, scoring two centuries in a match against Afghanistan in 2023. However, questions will linger over his captaincy. In pursuit of his landmark, Shanto might have taken his eye off the larger prize. Bangladesh were 247 runs ahead when play resumed after a rain delay and, with 50 overs still to be bowled on the day, an earlier declaration could have forced a result. Instead, Bangladesh batted on for 12 more overs and, with the innings break taken into account, more than an hour of potentially valuable time was lost on a wearing fifth-day pitch. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The delay gave Sri Lanka some hope but their top order crumbled under pressure. Lahiru Udara was stumped off a cleverly flighted delivery by Taijul Islam, while Pathum Nissanka gifted his wicket to Nayeem Hasan by spooning one straight to short mid-wicket. Taijul struck two crucial blows, removing the experienced Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal in quick succession, but time ran out for Bangladesh. Mathews, playing his 119th and final Test, walked off to a standing ovation as the crowd rose for one of Sri Lanka's greats. 'I can't believe the love I have received,' said Mathews. 'It's now up to the younger players to carry the baton and run.' There was a silver lining for Sri Lanka in the form of debutant Tharindu Rathnayake. A six-wicket haul from two innings on his debut was praiseworthy enough but Rathnayake also showcased his rare ambidextrous skills. He dismissed Mominul Haque with off-spin, then switched to left-arm orthodox to account for Litton Das and Jaker Ali. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He also pulled off a sensational run out, firing a direct hit from mid-on to catch Mushfiqur Rahim short of his ground on 49. The second Test will be played in Colombo next week. With AFP inputs

Jasprit Bumrah proves why he is second to none, eclipses Wasim Akram to achieve mind-boggling SENA record
Jasprit Bumrah, time and time again, keeps on proving why he is regarded as the best bowler in international cricket currently. On a placid Headingley pitch, Bumrah showed his class as he dismissed Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test. With the dismissal of Duckett in the third and final session, Bumrah achieved yet another milestone, and it is truly one to savour. Jasprit Bumrah goes past Wasim Akram. The India pacer now has the most wickets by an Asian bowler in the SENA countries. (AFP) The India speedster now has 147 wickets from 60 innings in the SENA countries. He has gone past former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram in the list of Asian bowlers with the most wickets in the SENA countries. Bumrah now tops the list, which also has Akram (146), Anil Kumble (141), Ishant Sharma (130), and Mohammed Shami (123). The 31-year-old has been the standout bowler from both England and India in the first Test as he has gotten the ball to talk on a pitch which is offering little to no assistance for the bowlers. In the second session on Day 2, Bumrah dismissed Zak Crawley (4) in the very first over. He got the right-hander all squared up and as a result, Crawley ended up handing a simple catch to Karun Nair in the slips cordon. Also Read: IND vs ENG, LIVE Score: Jasprit Bumrah does the magic for India On the other hand, Ben Duckett really got his eye in and was seeing the ball like a football. Despite his stay at the crease for more than two hours, he was unable to get the better of Bumrah. The India pace sensation finally got the last laugh as Duckett was bowled in the final session on Day 2 for 62 runs. After dismissing the left-hander, Bumrah had a sheepish smile on his face, and he even mouthed a word or two to let Duckett know. Possibly, Bumrah remembered Duckett's words before the series started, as while speaking to Mail Sport, the England opener remarked that Bumrah has nothing that he can surprise him with. "I've faced him in a five-Test series before. I know what he's going to do to me, and the good thing about that is I know what skills he has," said Duckett. 'There's going to be nothing that surprises me,' he added. India post 471 runs on the board Earlier, India posted 471 runs on the board after being asked to bat first, owing to centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. India looked set to go past the 600-run mark, but a gigantic collapse resulted in the visitors being bundled out for less than 475 runs. For England, Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue scalped four wickets each. Shubman was the top-scorer for India as he scored 147. Pant scored 134 while Jaiswal posted 101 runs.

Rishabh Pant's Unique Six-Hitting Stat In Record-Breaking Innings At Leeds
Rishabh Pant broke multiple records en rout to scoring his seventh century. India's Rishabh Pant surpassed MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket, achieving his seventh century on the second day of the series opener against England. Pant hit a six off the first ball of the 100th over in India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to reach the milestone. This was his first century since September 2024, when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had accumulated 4,876 runs with six centuries and 33 fifties, averaging 38.09. During this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12 fours, 6 sixes), Pant also completed 3,000 runs in 44 Tests, boasting 15 fifties and an average of nearly 44. He remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Wriddhiman Saha is third on this list with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer, who also have two each. Nayan Mongia has scored one century. Pant's 6-Hitting Record The wicket-keeper-batter achieved a remarkable feat in a Test innings in England by hitting six sixes, the highest number by a visiting batter in the sport's history. This accomplishment also places him as the joint-second-highest scorer by an Indian in a Test innings away from home, behind Hardik Pandya's seven against Sri Lanka in 2017. Rishabh Pant 's innings of 134 runs is the second-highest by a wicketkeeper at Headingley, only behind Jonny Bairstow's 140 against Sri Lanka in 2016. Pant's notable achievement of hitting a century with a six has become a hallmark of his Test career. He has achieved this remarkable feat three times in Tests, all against England. His first century with a six was against Adil Rashid at The Oval in 2018, followed by Joe Root in Ahmedabad in 2021, and Shoaib Bashir in Leeds. Among Indian batsmen, only Sachin Tendulkar (six) and Rohit Sharma (three) are around Pant's numbers. Since 2002, Pant has been the only batter to hit a six to complete his hundred more frequently than any other player. Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Kumar Sangakkara, Rohit Sharma, and Kusal Mendis have also achieved this feat three times during this period.
