Cardiologist calls matcha ‘science in a cup', shares 5 benefits of consuming it; we verify

Matcha, a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves, has long been celebrated in Japanese culture, especially in traditional tea ceremonies. However, beyond the ritual, matcha is also gaining momentum globally due to its potential health benefits. Unlike regular green tea, matcha contains the nutrients from the entire tea leaf, providing a more concentrated source of caffeine and antioxidants. Cardiologist and content creator Dr Alok Chopra took to Instagram to sing praises of this vibrant green powder. 'Matcha is not just a vibe; it is science in a cup,' he wrote, sharing five reasons why adding matcha to your routine may be a good idea. According to him, matcha may support calm focus, increase fat burn, detoxify the body, lift your mood, and provide an antioxidant boost. 'L-theanine fuels alertness without the crash… Matcha boosts metabolism and cellular energy… Chlorophyll helps flush out toxins… Caffeine plus L-theanine leads to focused and stress-free energy… [and] 137 more EGCG than regular green tea,' Dr Chopra explained. Dr Raj Kumar, senior consultant, Non-invasive Cardiology at PSRI Hospital, tells 'Each of these benefits has some scientific grounding, though the strength of evidence varies. Calm focus primarily comes from L-theanine, an amino acid found in matcha that promotes relaxation without inducing drowsiness. It enhances alpha brain waves and, when combined with caffeine (also present in matcha), supports alertness with reduced anxiety, a finding supported by several clinical studies. Fat burn is linked to EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a catechin that can mildly increase metabolism and fat oxidation, especially when combined with exercise.' He asserts, 'However, its impact is modest and not a substitute for diet or activity. Detox support is more anecdotal; while matcha contains chlorophyll, which may help eliminate certain toxins, robust scientific evidence in humans is limited. Mood lift is associated with the synergy of L-theanine and caffeine, which can improve mood, alertness, and temporarily reduce fatigue. Finally, antioxidant boost is perhaps the most supported claim. Matcha is rich in catechins, especially EGCG, which has potent antioxidant activity that helps neutralize harmful free radicals in the body.' A post shared by Alok Chopra (@dralokchopra) 'The difference in the quantity of EGCG is significant,' notes Dr Kumar, adding that EGCG is the most bioactive catechin in green tea, and having 137 times more means matcha can offer a much more potent antioxidant punch. However, context matters. 'That statistic refers to specific laboratory comparisons and may not reflect all commercial teas. In practical terms, one cup of matcha can provide a similar or greater benefit than multiple cups of regular green tea. If someone is seeking more concentrated antioxidant benefits or metabolic support, switching to matcha could be beneficial. That said, matcha also contains more caffeine, so moderation is essential, especially for those sensitive to stimulants,' stresses the doctor. The synergy between caffeine and L-theanine is unique. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increasing alertness and energy, but it can also lead to jitters and anxiety. L-theanine, on the other hand, promotes calmness by increasing GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), serotonin, and dopamine levels. 'When consumed together, as in matcha, L-theanine moderates the overstimulation caused by caffeine, resulting in a smoother, more sustained energy and focus often without the crash or anxiety linked with coffee or energy drinks. This combination is well-documented and one of the reasons matcha is favored by those looking for mental clarity without nervousness,' concludes Dr Kumar. Plates made of what? Viral video shows bizarre find at Karachi airport; passenger says, ‘Pakistan's condition is so bad'

A video from Karachi's Jinnah Airport has gone viral after a passenger showed food served on plates labelled as made from condom boxes. The man, Salim Akhtar Siddiqui, praised the food's taste but was shocked by the plate. "Pakistan's condition is so bad that we're getting such paper plates. I feel like crying," Salim says in the video. The Pakistani traveller confronts the shop employees. "It's not your fault, it's our people's fault," he says while blaming the system. The said video has gone so viral again that BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also shared it from his official handle. 'Condom Boxes = Paper Plates In Pakistan? A Pakistani passenger has put out a video from Pakistan's Karachi airport where food was being served on paper plates which were to be used in c*ndom boxes,' he wrote while sharing the Instagram Reel. 'They deserve the best recycling country award,' quipped one user. Karachi mein Airport bhi hai (Do they have airports in Karachi)?' came another sarcastic reply. Another social media user commented, 'This is called recycle and reuse. It's paper, no c*ndom there.' 'Sorry to point this out, but yes, the paper's original purpose was to be converted into a packaging box for condoms. This probably got rejected due to wrong print or specifications, and is converted into a paper plate instead. Never got made into a condom box, I can only hope,' came from another. While the viral video is currently trending on social media, it is from April 2023. Soon after the video had gone viral more than two years ago, the Border Health Services sealed all food counters of the company that used those plates. BHS Director Dr. Murtaza Shah said the action had been taken due to hygiene issues, the Times of Karachi reported at that time. The publication also reported that such plates had been served to both Indian and foreign travellers. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that all counters using the branded plates in both domestic and international areas had been shut down.

This 70-year-old lifts weight at the gym. Her simple, vegetarian diet goes viral, "Ghar par, thoda sa...."

70-year-old weightlifter Roshni Devi Sangwan, who has gone viral on IG for her weight lifting videos, recently revealed her simple, vegetarian diet at home. Nothing fancy or fad, the septuagenarian, while talking to Ranveer Allahabadia, said 'Oats thoda sa. 10 almonds, raisins. Uska juice banakar peekar jaati hun. Ghar par, thoda sa chawal, dal, salad, dahi. Yeh khaati hun. Shaam ko ek hi moong chilla banati hun. Usme paneer daalti hun and 1-2 hari mirchi. Uske baad ek glass doodh. Yehi khaati hun. Aur kuch nahi khaati (I have oats with 10 almonds and raisins in a drink. At lunch, I have a little bit of rice, dal, salad, and curd. In the evenings, I have a single soaked moong chilla with paneer and 1-2 green chillies. I drink one glass of milk after that. This is what I eat. Apart from these, I don't eat anything else.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Roshni Devi Sangwan (@weightliftermummy) Why Roshni's diet works While extremely simple, Roshni's diet works on many counts. It is simple, homemade, protein rich, and most importantly, consistent. Here are some other reasons why a protein rich Indian vegetarian meal might work for many (though each individuals is different, and there is no "one size fits all" diet) Multiple nutritional benefits Roshni consumes enough daal and paneer in her diet. Lentils and beans, along with chickpeas, peas, soy, paneer and nuts form the diverse plant-based protein sources in our vegetarian "ghar ka khaana". These foods supply protein together with essential vitamins and minerals along with fiber content. The protein content of lentils and dals such as moong dal and masoor dal, makes them easy to digest, while also providing high nutritional value. The combination of rice with dal produces a complete protein that contains all necessary amino acids which the human body requires. The diverse selection of foods, allows for complete nutritional balance, while eliminating the necessity for animal-derived foods. Simple ingredients Most of us shy away from fad diets because of how impractical they are to follow, while living at home with others. However Roshni's diet is just the opposite. The process of preparing dal or chickpea curry, remains simple while requiring minimal cooking time. By making your own meals (like Roshni), you gain full control over ingredient selection, which allows you to stay away from preservatives, as well as reduce your use of excessive oil and salt. The cooking process at home helps maintain higher nutrient levels than both fast and processed foods. Supports muscle growth and repair Muscle building, together with tissue repair, requires protein as a fundamental component. Weight lifters like Roshni, will obtain substantial advantages from consuming vegetarian protein sources. Muscle protein needs are met through paneer, as well as tofu and various soy products. Beans together with lentils, provide sustained energy release, which keeps you upbeat all day, while supporting your healthy lifestyle. Promotes heart health and weight management A diet consisting of lots of daal, with vegetables and whole grains, brings naturally low levels of unhealthy fats and cholesterol. The foods in this diet help decrease dangerous cholesterol levels, which protects against heart disease. Beans and whole grains contain fiber which helps digestion, and maintains weight health because they keep you satisfied for longer periods. Homemade cooking allows you to determine the amount of oil and spices used in your meals which results in healthier and lighter dishes.
