Lamine Yamal Scores Stunner in Barcelona's LaLiga Opener Win Over Mallorca
Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, who led Barcelona's prolific attack last season, needed only seven minutes to impress again. Yamal's curling cross found Raphinha by the far post and the Brazil forward headed in from close range.
Ferran Torres' shot from outside the area in the 23rd was a goal that drew complaints by Mallorca because one of its players was on the ground after being hit by the ball in the head in the buildup.
Some Mallorca players stopped playing after their teammate went down, but the referee allowed play to continue. Mallorca immediately complained after Ferran scored.
The hosts went a man down 10 minutes later when Manu Morlanes was sent off for a second yellow card for fouling Yamal on the run. His first yellow was for protesting Barcelona's second goal.
The second red card in the 39th came from Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi hitting the head of Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia with his left foot while reaching up for a high ball. The referee changed the card from yellow to red after a video review.
Yamal made it 3-0 in second half stoppage time by hitting the top corner.
Barcelona, which won the league last season after scoring 102 goals, was without veteran striker Robert Lewandowski because of an injury. Newly signed forward Marcus Rashford went in as a substitute in the 69th.
Garcia didn't have to work much on his Barcelona debut after being signed in the offseason on a transfer from city rival Espanyol.
Regular starting goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is out after undergoing lower back surgery, and García started ahead of Wojciech Szczesny and Inaki Pena, who replaced Ter Stegen last season.

Kyle Whittingham considered making his 21st season at Utah his last. Win a championship, walk away would have been a perfect ending. A disappointing season changed Whittingham's mind. A sour note was not the way he was going to end a run that included consecutive Pac-12 championships and seven 10-win seasons. 'I couldn't stomach going out on that, with that season, as frustrating as it was and as discouraging as it was,' Whittingham said. The Lobos were fourth nationally in total offense a year ago with Beck calling the shots and Dampier running the plays, so the Utes should be explosive in their new-look offense. 'We really just want to put the right guys in the right places to make plays," Beck said. 'We want to adapt to what our strengths are and play to those strengths. We're going to go, not at a fast tempo, but we're going no huddle.' Adding Dampier Utah's quarterback situation the past few years revolved around Cameron Rising. He was superb in 2021 and 2022 but struggled with injuries his final two years. Dampier gives the Utes a dimension they haven't had. The 5-foot-11 junior was one of the nation's best quarterbacks last season, beating teams with his arm and legs. Dampier threw for 2,768 yards and 12 touchdowns — with 12 interceptions — while adding 1,166 yards and 19 TDs rushing. 'He's got that 'it' factor that you look for in quarterbacks. He's got the field general mentality that you look for,' Whittingham said. "He's a guy that everybody gravitates towards. There's no doubt who's in charge on offense.' Dominating D Utah annually has one of the best, most physical defenses in the country. This season should be no different, even after losing numerous players to graduation. The Utes' front line should again be stout and the linebacking corps is solid, anchored by Lander Brown. Smith Snowden and Tao Johnson also are back in a secondary that could be among the best in the Big 12. 'The defense has been very consistent, something that you can count on from year to year,' Whittingham said. 'Can't remember the last time we've had a real down year defensively and so the defense just needs to do what they've been doing for a lot of years.' Schedule Utah has a tough season opener on the road, playing at UCLA on Aug. 30 before hosting Cal Poly and Wyoming. The Utes open Big 12 play at home against No. 23 Texas Tech and face No. 11 Arizona State two weeks later. Luka Dončić reportedly cleared to play for Slovenia after worrisome knee collision in Eurobasket exhibition
Los Angeles Lakers fans can breathe a sigh of relief, because Luka Dončić is alright. Dončić was reportedly cleared to play for Slovenia on Tuesday, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. It's a promising update for Dončić, who left Saturday's Eurobasket exhibition game against Latvia after a teammate fell on his knee. Dončić limped off the court and did not return to that contest. While the situation looked scary, those fears dissipated quickly. Reports emerged suggesting Dončić's injury wasn't serious, and that he wanted to return vs. Latvia. Slovenia's staff did not allow Dončić to return. He was spotted sitting on the bench with ice wrapped around his knee the rest of the contest. Despite the injury scare, Dončić was able to return to practice Monday. He apparently came out of that practice looking like himself, leading to Dončić reportedly being cleared to play Tuesday. Slovenia will take on Great Britain. In preparation for the NBA season, Dončić is taking part in the Eurobasket tournament for Slovenia. The tournament is in its exhibition stage now. Slovenia won't play its first official game of the event until Aug. 28, when it opens against Poland. The fact that Dončić is expected to take part in an exhibition game Tuesday is a good indicator he's feeling back to normal following his Saturday's injury. Dončić signed a three-year, $165 million max contract with the Lakers in early August. After joining the team in a shocking trade from the Dallas Mavericks last season, Dončić put up his usual numbers in 28 games in Los Angeles. Dončić, 26, averaged 28.2 points and 8.1 rebounds following the teade. Following the team's early playoff exit, Dončić has committed himself to working even harder this offseason. The star guard reportedly dropped roughly 31 pounds thanks to a new training regime. For all his success in the NBA, Dončić has faced questions about his offseason conditioning throughout his career. If he can put those concerns to bed, it's possible Dončić can unlock an even greater level during the 2025-26 NBA season, a terrifying thought for opposing defenders.
