UK govt to inject $1.2 bn for hosting sports events, upgrading facilities
British sport is getting a cash injection of more than 900 million pounds ($1.2 billion) from the government to help with the staging of big events such as the men's European Championship soccer tournament and Grand Departs in the Tour de France.
The money will also be used to help deliver a bid by soccer federations in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to host the Women's World Cup in 2035, the government said Thursday in announcing the funding commitment.
While more than 400 million pounds ($540 million) will go toward investment in new and upgraded grassroots facilities around Britain, the rest of the money will be spent on what the government described as major sporting events.
They include the men's Euros in 2028, staged alongside Ireland, as well as the Grand Departs of the Tour de France in men's and women's cycling in 2027 and the European Athletics Championships in 2026.
Together, this strategic investment in sport will help to deliver on the government's mission to kickstart economic growth by creating jobs, driving regional prosperity and encouraging visitors to the UK, the government said in a statement.
It is also designed to reduce barriers to opportunity, bring communities together through shared national moments and showcase the best of the UK to the world.

Paris : France made a new bet on its tech sovereignty Thursday by announcing a major investment in Eutelsat, part of a wider capital increase announced by the Starlink competitor and President Emmanuel Macron's office. "The race is on. That's why we have to take a position now and invest now. Otherwise, the whole market will be occupied and France and Europe will depend on other powers in future," Macron's office told AFP. Part of an overall deal with other investors worth 1.35 billion euros ($1.5 billion), Thursday's 717 million-euro capital injection by the French state will make Paris Eutelsat's largest shareholder, raising its stake from 13 percent to just under 30 percent -- the threshold that would have required launching a full takeover bid. The announcement comes as competition heats up in the satellite communications sector, where Elon Musk's Starlink is a dominant player but some governments would prefer sovereign solutions. Boasting more than 600 satellites since merging with British firm OneWeb in 2023, Eutelsat is the world's second-largest operator of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, behind Starlink, making it the obvious candidate as a European champion. The company has in the past called itself "the only LEO alternative to Starlink". "Eutelsat is a strategic asset contributing to European strategic autonomy," French Finance Minister Eric Lombard's office said. But it remains far smaller than the American heavyweight, which has 6,000 satellites lofted into orbit by Musk's comparatively cheap, reusable SpaceX rockets. Set to be completed by the end of this year, the capital increase is "a pivotal step in Eutelsat's strategic and financing roadmap, enabling the execution of its strategic vision," it said. The money will fund a renewal of Eutelsat's satellite fleet and improve its financial situation, including through a debt restructuring. Eutelsat is also gearing up to contribute to the Iris² network of European satellites in multiple orbits, supposed to offer communication services from 2030. "It has also spotlighted Europe's dependence on non-European technology." Musk has called Starlink the "backbone" of the Ukrainian army because of its wide use defending against Russia's invasion since 2022 -- and warned that "their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off", sending Europeans scrambling for alternatives. Eutelsat had already this week signed a 10-year, billion-euro deal at the Paris Air Show to provide military communications for the French armed forces. And presenting its latest quarterly results last month, the firm said it was in active sales talks with governments both inside and outside Europe. Major shareholders stumping up money alongside Paris are shipping giant CMA CGM, Indian telecoms operator Bharti Airtel and the FSP investment fund, owned by seven French insurance companies. The two-stage plan includes a "reserved" capital increase open only to the four named investors, with a second round open to others. "Discussions are ongoing" with other investors including the British government, "which could join the capital raise in due course," Eutelsat said.

VIJAYAWADA: Minister for HRD and IT Nara Lokesh met former British Prime Minister and founder of Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) Tony Blair in New Delhi on Thursday, and discussed issues related to usage of AI tools in the education system and the Andhra Pradesh government. During the meeting held with Lokesh in Mumbai in July last year, Tony Blair promised to extend cooperation for usage of AI tools in the education, and in the activities of the AP State government through his TBI. Later in December, 2024, the AP Education Department signed an MoU with TBI to improve the job opportunities for youth of the State by implementing modern technology in the education sector. As part of the agreement, TBI deployed its tech team, in Vijayawada with focus on reforms in higher education in AP, and the establishment of Global Institute for Good Governance. Lokesh and Blair, during their meeting in New Delhi discussed the progress of the project after the agreement. They also discussed at length the skill development agenda being implemented in the State, skill census, employment opportunities to youth from AP abroad, and the technological support by TBI. On the occasion, Lokesh invited Blair to join the advisory board of the Global Institute for Good Governance. Blair said TBI will partner with the AP government for the conclave of the education Ministers to be held in Visakhapatnam in August.

Spain gets new powers over visas, residence permits in Gibraltar
The European Union and UK agreed to give Spain new powers over the issuance of residency permits, visas and asylum in Gibraltar , as part of an accord to settle the post-Brexit border arrangements for the British overseas territory. A special role is foreseen for Spain in Gibraltar, a European Commission spokesperson told Bloomberg. The new system will allow Madrid to ensure the EU's visa-free Schengen area will be fully preserved once border protections are removed between the territory and the South of Spain. A political agreement reached in early June, if ratified, will eliminate all physical barriers, checks and controls on people and goods moving between Gibraltar and Spain, while establishing dual border controls at the port and airport of the territory. The authorities in Gibraltar will be able to issue a limited number of visas on humanitarian grounds with validity limited to its territory, an EU official said. The territory's government told Bloomberg that they would get the final decision on asylum cases and that while Spain will carry out residency checks, they will decide to grant a permit or not. Gibraltar is a self-governing British overseas territory that's reliant on the free movement of people traveling to and from Spain, which Brexit was meant to limit. Around 15,000 Spanish workers cross daily to work in the territory of 34,000 where both sides have been trying to avoid a hard border torpedoing the free flow of people and goods. The agreement 'does not compromise sovereignty in any respect and provides huge opportunities for traders in Gibraltar while, simultaneously, protecting the fluidity of people necessary for the continued success and expansion of our services industries, especially the online gaming, insurance and financial services sectors,' a spokesperson with the Gibraltar government said. The accord also foresees strong police and law enforcement cooperation, people familiar with the matter said. The new powers for Spain come against the backdrop of the difficult discussions both sides had over the status of Gibraltar airport and who controls it, with the UK insisting it won't agree to anything that compromises Gibraltar's sovereignty. The post-Brexit status of Gibraltar, a territory that the Spanish crown ceded to the UK in 1713, has been dragging on since the UK left the EU more than five years ago. The breakthrough achieved earlier this month came against the backdrop of the warmer ties between Brussels and the Labour government led by Keir Starmer. Both sides concluded in May a bilateral defense agreement and deals to ease the regulatory burden for UK firms exporting to the EU or EU fishermen access to the UK waters.
