Anjum returns to National shooting team with renewed energy

The Hindu2 days ago

Anjum Moudgil is pleased to be back in the National team to shoot in the World Cup in Munich.
After keeping a low profile for some time and being a bit detached from a sport that had kept her occupied for about a decade, Anjum has reclaimed the hunger to excel.
'I feel fresh and like a newcomer in the team,' said the 31-year-old Anjum, who has competed in the last two Olympics in Tokyo and Paris.
Quite accomplished ever since she won the World Championship silver medal in air rifle in Changwon, Korea (2018), Anjum realised that she had been far too obsessed with shooting in the Olympics in the last two cycles.
'I have been doing minimal training before the National Championships and the National Games. I was still shooting well and won medals. I did well in the trials and could have competed in the World Cups earlier, if not in the main team. I chose to step back and focus on a few things that have been pending for a long time,' revealed Anjum.
She utilised the time and all her savings, along with her husband Ankush Bhardwaj, to set up a dream project, Archon Fitness, a gym with a shooting range and other sporting facilities in Mohali.
'It is the only gym with a shooting range in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, the Tricity,' said Anjum, happy to have set up a dream project that provides a holistic fitness and recreation facility for everyone.
Experience is a great teacher, only for those who are willing to learn. Anjum is a fine student of sport and life. Being a practitioner of the Art of Living, Anjum immerses herself in meditation and has learnt to live in the present. There is no reverse gear to retrace the past, and no acceleration to visualise the future.
'It has been great to take the mind off shooting and focus on so many other things. It has been a very good learning experience, tackling so many aspects. I have stopped thinking too far ahead. The focus is to stay in the moment and do one's best. After the Tokyo Olympics, we tuned to Paris quickly, because the time was also short. Now, I focus only on the current competition. We will think about Los Angeles in 2028,' she said.
Relaxed
With plenty of achievements and medals, both in air rifle and rifle 3-position events, Anjum is quite relaxed about her shooting. Years of diligent training have tuned her technique nicely. With an uncluttered mind, she can shoot very well, even with limited preparation.
Even though two World Cups have finished already, there is plenty of action left in the season, with the Asian Championship and the World Championships lined up, along with another World Cup, before the Shooting League of India (SLI).
Anjum is confident of fine-tuning her shooting to match world standards and lend the best possible support to the Indian team that is already quite dominant in the international arena.
Anjum had won the mixed air rifle gold in Munich in 2019, and is ready to paint fresh memories to her rich collection.

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh betters Ariarne Titmus, smashes this big world record

Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh delivered a sensational performance by smashing the women's 400m freestyle world record at the Canadian Swimming Trials with a timing of 3min 54.18sec in Montreal on Saturday. The young swimming prodigy stunned fans and competitors alike with her blazing speed and impeccable technique, eclipsing the previous mark held by Australia's Ariarne Titmus . This is an ominous sign for McIntosh, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and former world record-holder in the event, just a month ahead of this year's World Championships in Singapore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Davao Del Norte - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo McIntosh shattered the existing world record of 3:55.38, which was established by Titmus during the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, surpassing it by more than a full second. "Going into tonight I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," the 18-year-old star said. "I mean, I didn't think my training would be 54.1, but I'm really happy with that overall." Live Events — kylesockwell (@kylesockwell) McIntosh's performance was remarkable as she achieved unprecedented success by completing each lap under 30 seconds, becoming the first woman to accomplish this feat. The Canadian's impressive split timings were: 27.22, 29.73, 29.61, 29.86, 29.62, 29.61, 29.47, 29.06. Taking a break following her successful defence of the 400 metres freestyle title at the Paris Olympics last year, Titmus is unable to respond immediately to McIntosh's remarkable performance that shattered her previous world record. Titmus maintains an undefeated record against McIntosh in head-to-head 400m competitions, securing victories with gold medals in Paris last year and Tokyo in 2021. However, the Canadian swimmer stands as her most significant challenger in the quest for a third consecutive Olympic triumph at Los Angeles in 2028. McIntosh was just 17 when she secured victories in three events at the 2024 Paris Games, clinching gold medals in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m medley. She is now preparing to compete in Singapore with the aim of expanding her impressive collection of four world championship titles.

Harry Kane saves England from embarrassment against Andorra in World Cup qualifying

England needed a second-half goal from Harry Kane to secure a 1-0 win over lowly Andorra and maintain a perfect record under Thomas Tuchel after three World Cup qualifiers. England was held scoreless by a team ranked 173rd in the world until Kane redirected a pass from Noni Madueke into the top of the net in the 50th minute after the Bayern Munich striker's initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Iker Álvarez. 'We need to be better for sure,' Kane said. 'It's not one that many will remember, and we had good spells, but we take the three points and move on.' It was goal No. 72 in his 106th appearance for the Three Lions. Tuchel's side remained top of Europe's Group K with nine points after wins against Albania and Latvia. They have yet to concede a goal under the German coach. Nevertheless, Tuchel said that he was 'not happy' with the slim win over tiny Andorra, which has a population of around 80,000. 'At the end of it, it was absolutely not OK because we lost focus and we lost the urgency that is needed,' he said. Andorra remained winless but managed to frustrate England's stars for most of the game with its five-man defensive line. Ezri Konsa had to block a late shot by Andorra's Guillaume Lopez to prevent the chance of an equalizer. 'We kept giving it away and that gave them a bit of confidence and energy,' Kane said. "At 1-0 with five to 10 minutes to go you have to be careful.' England dominated possession and Eberechi Eze went close to a second goal when he forced Álvarez to tip his header of the bar as the visitors couldn't extend the lead. England had won its previous six meetings with Andorra by a combined score of 25-0. 'In terms of effort, I think I couldn't be prouder of my team and how they carried it out,' Andorra coach Koldo Álvarez said. The game was played at Espanyol's stadium in Barcelona, nearly three hours south of the Pyrenees principality due to concerns that work on Andorra's home stadium wouldn't be finished in time. Only the group winners qualify directly for next year's tournament in North America. The second-placed teams go into a playoffs. Europe will have 16 teams in the expanded 48-team field for the World Cup. The group stage of European qualifying runs through November. England will next host Senegal in a friendly on Tuesday. Albania and Serbia draw under tight securityAlbania and Serbia drew 0-0 in the latest chapter of a charged rivalry rooted in deep historical and ethnic tensions between the Balkan neighbors. Serbia goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic saved a penalty kick by Rey Manaj in the best chance of the game, which was played without Serbian fans as determined by UEFA for security concerns. Albania is second in Group K behind England with four points after three games. There were few chances in the match played under tight security, with more than 2,000 police officers guarding the capital. Albanian fans loudly whistled when the Serbian anthem was played and shouted Kosovo, which predominantly has an ethnic Albanian population and which was part of Serbia until 1999 when a NATO air campaign pushed Serb forces and authorities out. Some fans tossed beer cups at the Serbian players, despite repeated calls for them to stop. A 2014 game between the teams in Belgrade was abandoned when a drone carrying an Albanian flag sparked a full-scale brawl. The last time they met on Albanian soil was in 2015. Veteran Dzeko scores for BosniaA goal from 39-year-old Edin Dzeko gave Bosnia and Herzegovina a 1-0 win over San Marino. The Balkan republic leads Group H with three wins, while San Marino is bottom with zero points. Austria beat Romania 2-1 in the same group as Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer scored for the hosts before Denis Alibec halved the difference in injury time. Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries provided the scoring for the Netherlands in a 2-0 win at Finland to start their qualifying campaign in Group G. Lithuania was held 0-0 at Malta also in Group G.
