Ledecky finished the race in 15:26:44. That was five seconds better than Simona Quadarella, who took home silver Tuesday. Lani Pallister finished third.
Ledecky trailed Pallister early in the event, but got stronger as the race went on. Ledecky eventually surged into the lead, paving the way for her victory. While it wasn't a historic performance, Ledecky did post the fifth-fastest time ever in the 1500m freestyle. She's been so dominant in the event that she owns all five of the top-5 fastest times in the 1500m freestyle. Ledecky already held the fifth-fastest time in the event, but her performance Tuesday exceeded her previous top-5 time.
It marks yet another excellent performance for Ledecky, who is already recognized as one of the best swimmers in Olympics history. She owns 14 total Olympic medals, including nine golds. Her first Olympic gold medal came back in 2012, when she won the 800m freestyle. She took home two golds at the 2024 Olympics, winning the 800m freestyle again and grabbing the 1500m freestyle win. Ledecky also won the 1500m freestyle event at the 2020 Games.
She's been even more dominant in the event at the World Championships. Tuesday marks the sixth time she's won the 1500m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships.

Olympic star Dahlmeier dead after climbing accident
Double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died after a mountaineering accident in Pakistan. The 31-year-old German was caught in rockfall during an expedition in the Karakoram mountains on Monday. Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, called emergency services after the accident, which occurred at about 5,700 metres (18,700 feet). Rescue teams, containing expert climbers from Germany and the United States, immediately began a rescue mission but their searches were hindered by adverse weather conditions. Dahlmeier's management company confirmed on Wednesday that she had died. "A recovery operation was launched but ultimately called off on the evening of 29 July," her representatives told Germany's Die Welt newspaper. Her management said that Dahlmeier had likely died on 28 July - the day of the accident. She was the first woman to win the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games and won a further 15 medals, including seven gold, across five World Championships before retiring from competition in May 2019. Today, we look at one of the most controversial figures in American history, USC Heisman Trophy running back O.J. Simpson. Position: Running back Years played at USC: 1967-1968 Career highlights: After playing two years at the junior college level, Simpson arrived at USC in 1967. It did not take him very long to make an impact. In his first season, with the Trojans, Simpson led the country in rushing, and was named a Unanimous All-American. His iconic 64-yard touchdown run propelled USC to a 21-20 victory over UCLA en route to winning the national championship. The following season, Simpson once again led the country in rushing, and was once again named a Unanimous All-American. He was also awarded the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second Trojans to win the award, following Mike Garrett three years prior. Simpson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1973. After USC: The Buffalo Bills selected Simpson with the first overall pick in the 1969 NFL Draft. He would go on to have a Hall of Fame career that featured five first-team All-Pro honors, four times leading the league in rushing, and becoming the first player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season. Of course, Simpson is best known for what happened after his playing career came to an end. From the alleged murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, to the Ford Bronco chase, to the highly-publicized criminal trial that ended in his extremely controversial acquittal, to his being found liable for their deaths in the civil trial, to his arrest for burglary in Las Vegas more than a decade later, books could be (and have been) written about Simpson and one of the wildest sagas that we have ever seen from a celebrity. Simpson passed away from cancer last year at the age of 76. USC did not issue a statement following his death.
