Delhi Zoo to welcome otters after two decades, Sangai deer to be sent to Surat as part of exchange

Now, a pair of smooth-coated otters from Gujarat is expected to arrive at the Delhi zoo by next month, marking a significant addition to its animal population. The transfer is part of an animal exchange programme with Surat Zoo, which will receive two pairs of Sangai deer from Delhi in return.
The last otter at the zoo died in 2004 and since then efforts to procure the species had remained unsuccessful.
New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Otters are set to make a comeback at the National Zoological Park in Delhi after more than 20 years, officials said.
'A team from Delhi will travel to Surat next month to bring the otters here,' zoo director Sanjeet Kumar confirmed. 'We currently have more than 80 Sangai deer, the highest number in any zoo in the country, so we are in a position to send a few to Surat,' he said.
The exchange had originally been scheduled for March, and a delegation from Delhi, including a zookeeper, had visited Surat to inspect the otters and study their habitat and care. However, high temperatures and unsuitable travel conditions led to a delay.
'It's essential that conditions are safe and comfortable for the animals on both sides before any transfer is made,' a senior zoo official said.
The arrival of the otters will push the zoo's species count to 96, further enriching the biodiversity on display.
'In 2004, we lost our last otter. Since then, we haven't had one here and this exchange is a big step for us,' Kumar said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi zoo is gearing up for a major infrastructure overhaul, with a comprehensive redevelopment plan currently underway.
As part of this upgradation, authorities are working on developing a multi-utility plaza at the entrance, a new parking zone, glass-walled enclosures, and underwater aquariums to enhance the visitor experience.
Established in November 1959, the Delhi Zoo is operated by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and remains one of the most-visited zoological parks in India. PTI NSM NSM OZ OZ

2 coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near Kanpur

Kanpur, Aug 1(PTI) Two coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near the Panki area between Kanpur and Tundla on Friday, railways said. The incident, which occurred on the busy Delhi-Howrah route, caused a major disruption to train services. According to railway chief public relations officer Shashi Kant Tripathi, the sixth and seventh coaches from the engine came off the tracks with a loud jolt. 'The train was travelling at a low speed at the time, which averted a major tragedy," he said. A few passengers sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene, he added. Passengers who witnessed the incident reported feeling the coaches being suddenly tilted, causing panic. Technical teams and a medical van were immediately dispatched to the site to begin rescue and restoration operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi deployed a team of police force police to supervise the rescue efforts and control the crowd. The derailment disrupted train movement on the Delhi-Howrah route, forcing the North Central Railway (NCR) to divert multiple trains. Normal train movement is expected to resume following the completion of track clearance and a thorough safety inspection, Tripathi said. The railways has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the derailment. PTI COR CDN VN VN view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mock drill simulating earthquake, chemical leak conducted in Gurugram

Gurugram, Aug 1 (PTI) A comprehensive mock drill was conducted in Gurugram on Friday under 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra," during which two disaster scenarios—an earthquake and a chemical leak—were simulated and practised live, an official said. According to a statement, all major disaster management agencies jointly participated in the exercise, demonstrating their quick response and coordination capabilities. The drill began at 9 am with the simulation of an earthquake scenario at the Government Senior Secondary School in Sector 36, the ADC office in Vikas Sadan, the Polyclinic in Sector 31, and Star Mall. Simultaneously, a chemical leak emergency was simulated at the Indian Oil LPG bottling plant located in Bhondsi. As soon as the siren was sounded, citizens were evacuated through designated routes. Rescue teams used ladders and stretchers to evacuate people trapped on upper floors. Tau Devi Lal Stadium was designated as the staging area, where resources and emergency vehicles were pre-positioned. During the drill, no mobile phone or landline communication was used. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar monitored the entire exercise live from the control room. 'The objective of this mock drill was not just response, but to test network disruption, resource availability, and departmental coordination under real conditions. Our preparedness should be evaluated before the disaster strikes, not after it," Kumar said.
