PETALING JAYA: Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin has been tasked with alleviating tensions in Perak Bersatu after a seat-swapping request in the state assembly, perceived as part of a power struggle for the role of acting opposition leader. A Bersatu leader said several assemblymen and division leaders were unhappy with state chief Ahmad Faizal Azumu for sending a letter to the state assembly requesting that Sungai Manik assemblyman Zainol Fadzi Paharudin swap seats with Changkat Jong assemblyman Nadziruddin Bandi. The assemblymen and division leaders said they were not consulted on the move, which should have been discussed as it involved a major role in Perak. The Bersatu leader said party president Muhyiddin Yassin had specifically assigned his deputy, Hamzah, to manage the dispute. 'Muhyiddin has asked Hamzah to look into the problem,' the leader told FMT. Faizal, also known as Peja, said the request for a swap was made because Nadziruddin was recently promoted to Perak Bersatu secretary, a post which Zainol had relinquished. However, several Bersatu divisions saw this as allowing Nadziruddin to take over Zainol's role as acting opposition leader, following the six-month suspension of PAS's Razman Zakaria. Zainol is seated next to Razman in the legislative assembly. The request was rejected by assembly speaker Zahir Abdul Khalid, although he agreed to move Nadziruddin to the front row, placing him two seats away from Zainol. Caught by surprise Ipoh Timur Bersatu chief Fadhli Ismail said he and other division leaders were caught by surprise when they found out about Faizal's letter, which he said was sent unilaterally. Fadhli said Zainol should remain the acting opposition leader in Razman's absence given his seniority in the party and as an assemblyman. Zainol, a four-term assemblyman, served on the state executive council for three terms and is also a Bersatu Supreme Council member. On the other hand, Nadziruddin is a first-term assemblyman who was only recently appointed as Perak Bersatu secretary. Kuala Sepetang assemblyman Ahmad Man said neither Perak Bersatu nor Perikatan Nasional had called a meeting to discuss the move for the two to swap seats. 'This is a state assembly matter, not just a party issue,' he said, adding that PAS assemblymen were also initially in the dark about the proposed seat change. Mustapha open to friendly contests if seat talks fail

Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. Advertisement 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Mustapha said PKR's main priority was political stability, and warned that clashes at the state level could strain relationships within the federal government. 'I urge everyone to stay open-minded. There's no benefit in fighting among ourselves and risking division. 'We want unity to continue. Petros standoff adds pressure as Petronas staff face job cuts, says Muhyiddin
PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin urged the government to exercise prudence in its use of Petronas funds, especially at a time when national debt was rising and the economy remained weak. PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said today that Petronas's ongoing dispute with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) is putting more pressure on the energy producer amid its company-wide restructuring exercise. Muhyiddin said Petronas urgently required a long-term strategy to safeguard its sustainability and competitiveness as a state-owned enterprise, especially in the face of global headwinds such as falling oil prices and the accelerating transition to renewable energy. 'The unresolved dispute between Petronas and Petros regarding gas distribution rights in Sarawak not only impacts Petronas's revenue, but also destabilises the wider oil and gas industry in Malaysia,' he said in a statement. Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president and Pagoh MP, cited a June 2 report by The Edge, which stated that several oil and gas companies in the country reported declining earnings or losses in the first quarter of 2025. A key reason cited was the underutilisation of vessels and delays in exploration activities, both stemming from Petronas's dispute with Petros. 'If this situation persists, it will not only place Petronas and its employees in a state of uncertainty, but also jeopardise the entire oil and gas ecosystem. Currently, over 70,000 Malaysians are employed in the oil and gas services and equipment sector,' he said. Last week, Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz announced that the company would reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people to cut costs due to falling crude prices. Yesterday, Petronas reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding employee welfare amid a company-wide restructuring exercise that will cut about 10% of its workforce, including by offering competitive separation packages. On Saturday, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas's move to trim its workforce stemmed from global challenges and was not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petros. Muhyiddin urged the government to exercise prudence in its use of Petronas funds, especially at a time when national debt was rising and the economy remained weak. He said the government should urgently table a sustainability plan for Petronas, along with a clear roadmap for the future of Malaysia's oil and gas industry.

Second round of Pofma sanctions for owner of The Online Citizen's website, social media accounts
This is the second time that The Online Citizen has been slapped with the declaration, with its first due to expire in July 2025. - The Online Citizen/Facebook via ST/ANN SINGAPORE: The people running The Online Citizen's (TOC) website, Facebook, Instagram and X pages will continue to be barred from deriving any financial benefits from the running of its platforms till 2027. In a statement on June 11, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) said TOC's website and social media pages – which were labelled as Declared Online Locations (DOLs) – had first been declared as such in July 2023, and were due to expire on July 21, 2025. DOLs have to comply with actions under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma) that would prevent their operator from financially benefiting during the period they are listed as one. However, said MDDI, TOC 'continued to communicate falsehoods through its online platforms over the past two years'. Between July 2023 and June 2025, it received eight correction directions under the fake news law. These included one in February 25, after TOC published an article about modification works at the Ridout Road colonial bungalow leased by Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam's wife. In its article, it said the Singapore Land Authority had given Shanmugam assurances of a lease extension beyond its 2027 expiry, and that public funds were used to pay for the earthworks carried out at the bungalow since 2024, among other claims. These are falsehoods, said MDDI. As a result, TOC's website and social media pages have again been labelled DOLs, a move necessary 'to ensure Singaporeans continue to be alerted to TOC's record of communicating falsehoods', said the ministry. The new declaration comes into effect immediately after the current direction expires and will remain till July 21, 2027 at 12pm. TOC will be able to continue its operations, but will have to carry a notice on its online platforms to notify its audience that it has been declared a DOL. The notice will also have to state that it had 'communicated multiple falsehoods' and that its viewers should exercise caution when accessing it for information. MDDI added that service providers, including digital advertising agencies, will have to take steps to ensure that their paid content on TOC's platforms are not made available in Singapore. 'Individuals and companies must also not provide financial support to TOC's DOLs to avoid promoting the communication of falsehoods in Singapore on these platforms,' it added. At present, there are three other outlets currently listed as DOLs. They are Transformative Justice Collective's website and social media pages, Gutzy Asia's website and social media pages, as well as opposition politician Kenneth Jeyaretnam's website and social media pages. A provision under Pofma allows the Government to order an internet intermediary to disable access to a DOL if the owner of the DOL does not comply with the declaration and paid content on the site continues to be displayed to users here. If an internet intermediary fails to comply and is convicted, it can be fined up to S$20,000 (US$15,545) for each day that the government order is not fully complied with, up to a total of $500,000. The owner or operator of a DOL can however apply to the Minister for Digital Development and Information to suspend, vary or cancel the declaration. If the minister refuses the application, an appeal can be made to the High Court. - The Straits Times/ANN
